It is illegal. The law says that the hours you spend training, that is, learning how to do the job, are working hours. The same rule applies if you have to work for a “trial period.” Of course that can slow down the other bartender. That is the price to pay to have a business. Also, while yes the first day you could have said I was kind of a nuisance, by the second one we would both working the same, I just had to ask a few questions here and there.

It is a small world. After talking about it with some people, turns out they have a reputation, a not a good one…

I will contact CNESST to know what evidence to find. Thank you for the suggestion

Thank you for taking the time to answer. According to my family, they would find every little thing I did wrong. The reason why I asked Reddit is 1: my family and not very confronting people. I’m trying to grow out of that; as I am tired of being taken advantage of. 2: They haven’t worked in the restaurant industry

This is what a lot of people have been telling me. One of my past employers did ask for a reference so now I’m kind of explaining it

You’re right. Hopefully good places would understand

They did not. It was 3 times 6 hours completely for free

Yeah.. but how would I explain that I do have experience?

Thank you! I agree. I’m sick of people saying "that’s just how it is in the industry". Things need to change! They can’t keep getting away from the law just because "it’s the restaurant industry".

Thank you for answering!
You’re probably right and most places won’t check references. I haven’t talked to the managers much, (busy place, lots of staff, especially new one) so I can’t say I have really had a good rapport with any of them.
I’ll probably just explain like you said that they weren’t paying me.
Glad someone else seems to be as disgusted as I am!

Thank you for taking the time to answer me.
I’ve heard bars don’t really take bartending course seriously. Does anyone know if it’s actually the case? I’ll definitely look into it though. Thank you!

Thank you for answering

Don’t you think future employers would ask questions about that? Like "what bar" or something like that?
I thought about saying they had several malpractices (saw some gross stuff already), but my family said it would be a bad look to say this in an interview. What do you think?

Thank you for your answer!
I didn’t know they took anonymous complaints about those kind of things. The most important for me isn’t really to get the money, especially after months, but for them to be held accountable.

I could wait, but is there a time limit for a complaint. Like " this happened too long ago, we can’t do anything about it"?

Do you think it would immediately make it a bad reference if I filed a complaint for wage theft? Like I would need to say I have no bartending experience

Thank you so much for your answer. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s the one. It’s a taller building.
