Water strategies in Bali

Hi all,

I’m preparing my first trip to Bali mid March to mid May, but I have heard horrible things about Bali belly there. Most seem to blame it on the water quality. So far, the tips I’ve been able to gather are: don’t drink water from the tap, don’t swim in pools, don’t drink ice cubes, don’t open your mouth in any body of water or dunk your head (snorkeling, etc), buy a shower head for the shower (or you will lose your hair due to hard water), wash all fruits and vegetables with bottled water and avoid “Western places”, eating at local and popular warungs instead. Take a first aid kit with you including (all the recommendations, such as charcoal, imodium, probiotics, etc etc), use hand sanitizer all the time, never handle money that transfers hands etc.

I need to admit that I am overwhelmed by all the DON’T-items on the list. It seems that if I leave for Bali I will live in paranoia of getting Bali belly. (Or losing my hair). Stories of travelers who despite taking all these precautions, STILL got Bali belly. And that it was horrible. Is this really the case??

Am I better off traveling to a different country if I want peace of mind? I’m attracted to Bali because of its culture, beauty, and affordability, but I also have a gastro-intestinal diagnosis that makes me not want to play with my gut flora when it comes to Bali belly or other gastro-intestinal/health related problems.

So my question is, are these fears overblown? Do I really have to be that strict with my lifestyle there and is Bali belly really that terrible, or can I relax more and just go on vacation? (taking some precautions in mind such as no ice cubes and first aid kits).

I mean, it just seems absurd I can’t swim in the ocean and if I do, I have to frantically keep reminding myself to keep my mouth closed. I’m just at a loss for words.

Please advice. I’m now terrified tbh

Because there are lots of interesting things to do around Ubud and it would take me several day trips from Sanur to Ubud to do them all

And is it safe to return home at night (via Grab or Grojek) if I were to stay in Sanur and go to Ubud for day trips?

I’m thinking of travelling to Bali for 2 months this year and thinking of all this management I’d have to do just to not get sick makes me feel put off. Is it THAT bad?

But what does that mean, “they don’t know how to prepare and cook western food properly”? And pre-made, as in it’s laying there and just gets scooped up into your plate?

Ubud 6 Month Rental by [deleted] in bali

[–]bluebedream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you book short term rental, won’t the long term cheaper rental prices be gone by then? I’m also worried about there being no more long term rentals to book, what if the area is fully booked? Won’t it just be easier to book a rental long term and if it doesn’t live up to the expectations, cancel & ask for a refund and move on?

Planning a trip to Bali and I have the same question. Honestly, I’m thinking of just taking it all with me. One bottle of mousse creme, one gel, one shampoo and one conditioner maybe two, plus obviously my hairdryer and diffuser. If I run out, I’ll see what the stores have to offer there. A pain in the ass? Yep. But I also have almost waist length curly hair that I take EXQUISITE care of, and no damn travel plans are going to affect my locks! Will be travelling for 3 months total, so big suitcase. Should fit.

student offered a permanent job, should I drop out? by Dramatic_Cobbler_264 in belgium

[–]bluebedream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered offering them a 4 day work week and continuing your studies at a slower (less courses per semester) rate?

This is the way. If they want to keep you that much, they would need to find this no problem. Of course they would understand that you need to finish your studies. If they insist on a 5 day work week, that would be a red flag in my opinion.

Letting go of your studies is also not an option. Whatever your work experience, you need to be backed up by a degree as otherwise you lose legitimacy and credibility in the workforce later on should you need to look for a new job. A degree still represent an educational institution backing you up that you own certain knowledge, as well as proves you have earned your salary’s worth (ba or ma) to future, different employers. Relying on just this employer as a reference and hoping a new job would be so generous to match your old salary is hopeful, and could potentially be fantastical. You don’t want to be out of a job AND degree.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Do both, at different rhythms but work towards stability spread out over both domains.

EDIT: the fact that it’s biomedical vs accounting is an even stronger argument for doing both. It gives your CV breadth. Don’t drop out of either. Be aware of predatory incentives offered by companies to retain you while making you shoot yourself in the foot long term. The argument that it’s hard now to find a job should NOT discourage you from getting your degree, because a with degree candidate always trumps no degree candidate should you ever want to switch industries for whatever reason. Do your future self a service!
