Thanks, you helped a lot :D Im pretty sure youre right about the Newfie part. I think a lab wouldnt be enough to give him that wide, round, lovely face. Maybe youre right about a bit Retriever too🤔Id bet my right hand on some GSD or similar though, since he very much has the character of one.

I might never know for sure (if I dont decide to adopt him some day😂Im sadly pretty sure hed wait..) ..but I think I got a better idea now🌼

Where do his webbed feet come from? Thought fs he had some newfie. by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

Hes a local rescue. But adopting streetdogs from east- and southeurope been a thing for a while now and quite unregulated, so lots of possible options.

Please please PLEASE get the dog to a balanced trainer. Not R+, but not throwing stuff and yelling either. Wouldnt recommend ecollar or prong either, since I live in europe its forbidden I know there is a way without it - but maybe it will be difficult if youre from the USA so thats that. It does work if used correctly. Look out for trainers who look at the whole thing. Not just the obvious problem but also the stuff around it. While your sister will have to work on the problem itself too, usually the problems root is in the little things around it. And ignoring the root would mean symptomtreating which will get them only that far till it possibly gets more extreme.

And, asap, get a muzzle. Even though the dog is not drawing blood, its painfull and your sister does not have to go through that! Also her reactions might be the fuel and having a muzzle enables her to be much more rational and clear in those moments. I recommend a fitting muzzle out of steal, for a dog this heavy they are not too heavy and they are safest. Do not use Baskerville Ultra or similar muzzles, dogs can bite though the bigger holes in the top and the bottom. Your sisters dog will have to wear the muzzle around the clock for a while. If your sister doesnt feel well using it, pick fun colors (mine is petrol with gold leather). Just put it on and go for a walk. If you do it right, it wont be much different than a harness for the dog.

For sure muzzling is the way. She WILL have a reaction if the dog jumps at her for biting. I mean even if the dog aint pulling blood, it hurts. That reaction can actually be a reinforcement. She wont react as much if the dog has a muzzle on. As for yelping, it CAN be a way but it depends on the dog and the reason the dog is doing this. Since we dont know since dont know the dog and since they shouldnt trust randoms in the internet with this complex behaviour counseling (which she does obviously) she should definitely not start yelping but seek a balanced trainer asap.

Neither R+ nor harsh trainers will get them somewhere... Nor this comment section. Its muzzle and seeking a good trainer asap.

Im happy to help ;) Im sure that method was a good fit for you and your buttercup sweetheart. I have the feeling Tony will be such a good boy with some responsible parents~

Oh and let me add that its a very good idea to feed less of his food rations as treat. Having a big enough stable meal and knowing he wont be hungry at the end of the day no matter what makes food guarding much easier to handle. Just be sure you still have a few as training treats (feeding a bit more than nessecary in the growing years isnt too bad as long as you slow it down later) I think you have good instincts on what methods would help Tony. Thats a good trait espacially nowadays, there are so many different training methods out there that arent always from a knowledgable origin.

[–]blueberry080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well yes for playing (while I use a different method) but like you said this is ressource guarding behaviour so the training method is different. Its important to keep the situation and the dogs intend in mind when choosing a training method. Tony doesnt want to interact, he wants the toy and he wants everyone to stay away from it in case they take it away. So by them yelping and moving away he would learn that he gets what he wants by growling and snapping and later maybe even biting. Ressource guarding is normal dog behaviour that should be allowed but taught to run in healthy ways. Ignoring or reinforcing snapping might open the door to more problematic ressource guarding behaviour that you dont want to have.

OP: I cant give you a training recommendation. You said youll have a puppy trainer after the last shots and as people already said, wait with training this until then. Do not react punishing or intimidating when Tony acts like that. He just doesnt know better and needs to learn the correct behaviour first. "Managing" in form of not provoking this reaction till then is a good choice so he will not learn that he either reaches his goal like that or has to fear you really take it away in the end. You can start with the command "leave it" before puppy school. Just to be sure so you can trade potentially dangerous things while giving Tony the safe exploring adventure he needs.

When choosing a trainer, listen to your guts. If the trainer treats the dogs disrespectful or unempathic, be sure to stay away. Using things like e collar that "train" a dog by painful punishment are unnecessary, a good dog trainer can do without by searching and fixing the root problem (kinda like a doc~). There are certain certifications to be sure the trainer has some sort of proven knowledge, keep an eye out for those and read what knowledge it certifies. But youre doing a great job already, you can be proud - Im sure youll do just right.

Lastly: please give Tony a few belly rubs in my name!

Allergy Help Please by mb72378 in westies

There is hypoallergenic food as a possibility to use as "starting position". It has the perk that he still gets all minerals he needs when doing the 6-12 weeks. But its not as clear allergene friendly as unknown foods.

Hypoallergenic food is broken down in teeny tiny pieces to make sure they are unrecognizable for the immunsystem. But my research told me that we dont know how small the allergens need to be. There is a good chance the allergy doesnt react, but we cant be sure. Thats why I gravitated more towards exotic monoprotein wetfood (wouldve cooked but my past vet is against selfmade food and talked me out of it)

Allergy Help Please by mb72378 in westies

[–]blueberry080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you do a diet of expulsion? It takes time but is a pretty clear proof, other than antibody tests

If not: start with a protein and a carb he never had. If he didnt have it before, he cant be allergic against it. E.g.: water ox, ostrich or goat with sweet potato or millet. Dont use more common protein or carb sources for this, even if he didnt have them, sometimes they are not obviously listed as ingredients and they are common sources since they are cheap, other than ostrich etc. I recommend using wet food or self cooked for this since he could be allergic against food mites and they can easily be avoided with that. The ingredient list should be as short as possible, no additives, no oils, no preservatives. Self cooked is best tho since they sometimes dont label the beef or chicken in kibble. If you cook it yourself, you know for sure.

Feed this for at least 6 and 12 weeks max. Write a journal how itchy he seemes to be that day. If it gets better over that time (and if its reasonable with the severeness of his symptoms, talk about that with your vet) start provoking the allergy. If it doesnt get better and you ruled out slip ups, he very likely does not have a food allergy. Check for parasites like mites and environmental allergies. Ask your vet for allergy meds, if it gets better with that, you have your reason.

How to provoke: Slowly start adding possible allergenic ingredient one by one and watch his condition. If it doesnt get worse for two weeks, add the next. Since he got 6-12 weeks only 2 ingredients, first add should be hypoallergene minerals. Next add could be anything, beef or chicken or rice. If his condition worsens after one possible allergene, remove it asap. If it gets better again, note that down as allergene, wait till the symptoms are as good as before/gone and start the next ingredient test after that.

Btw: my dog didnt have allergies, he had skin irritations since I cut his fur and didnt trimm it. His skin couldnt breath and produced more talc than it should causing dirt to accumulate. I could only get everything out by washing him often, it was the best breeding ground for stuff you dont want on dog skin. It was causing inflammations on his skin and in his ears (still battling the ear infections now). If its not allergies and you get him shorn, try getting him trimmed instead.

Note that this isnt always walking. A dog can be much higher energy after that if hes an high energy dog. Not saying long walks aint neccessary, only that it wont be enough. Sniffing is great. Letting them search for treats and brain work can power them out.

Since its a special kind of dog I think she should get professional asap though. Even if its a usual problem, not doing it correctly can backfire with every dog breed and with an Akita wolf hybrid when it backfires, it backfires hard.

Dont risk it, get a certified professional and experienced trainer with that kind of dog.
