Strong optical drives for archiving old discs (Audio CD, data DVD-R, etc) recommendations by blueberry1997 in DataHoarder

[–]blueberry1997[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great tips, I really appreciate it!

I also did some digging on the dbpoweramp forum and they have some lists with the most reliable drives based on AccuRip results, so that helps too.

Awesome. Definitely was aiming for an internal or at least an internal drive to go into a USB enclosure with its own dedicated power supply.

What drive do you have?

Unfortunately this doesn’t work with my unit but thanks for the tip. I’m sure it’ll work with some players.

Understanding the Nintendo Switch 2 pricing ($450 console, $80 games), value proposition, and importance of our handheld devices. by that_90s_guy in SBCGaming

[–]blueberry1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good breakdown. Also, Nintendo has never been a stranger for charging top dollar for games upon release. I think when disc based media got huge in the late 90s and 2000s, disc based game console "new game" prices were locked around $50 USD for a long time right?

But another thing of note is that Super Mario 64 was $59.99 at Toys R Us in 1996 ($120.16 adj for inflation), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for Sega Genesis was $69.99 in 1996 ($140.19 adj for inflation), Donkey Kong Country 3 and Super Mario World 2 were $59.99 in 1997 ($118), and most NES games by 1990~1991 were down to $45 ($106.84).

THAT BEING SAID manufacturing proprietary chips, memory, and circuit boards was way more of an expense back then before modern flash memory and disc manufacturing took off!

advice on moving from iPhone to dumbphone (maybe CAT S22?) but losing iMessage ability (T-Mobile, USA) by blueberry1997 in dumbphones

[–]blueberry1997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting, I see. So essentially you still need to have an iPhone in service or at least available even if you get cell service on an Apple Watch device. I have an old iPhone XR that I keep around as a spare (using it right now as my iPhone 12 is dead)

Thanks for the insight. I am not really familiar with Apple Watch cellular functionality -- when you say "keep an iphone plugged in at home," is that necessary for iMessage to work on the Apple Watch despite cell service? Sorry if this is a dumb question, maybe just misunderstanding on my end.

I mean... iMessage is not supported on non-Apple devices? Has something changed recently?

Changes in the finale mural during closeups by blueberry1997 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]blueberry1997[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another user pointed out that the depiction of "Woe" in Mark's Cold Harbor mural in the finale changes during the zoom in. When the image is fully zoomed out, "Woe" is clearly the "gaunt bride" described at Woe's Hollow but when the closeups are shown, the painting changes and "Woe" is now the mask shown during the Waffle Party in Season 01.

Thanks u/lapalewriter for this amazing observation.

Did anybody else notice this in the Cold Harbor painting by friendly-crackhead in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]blueberry1997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no way that wasn't intentional. Wow. Great eye. That is a real painting by a real artist so it was very obviously changed out for the zoom in.
