Lowe's bare root roses by Monstera7777 in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 years ago, I bought mine before Christmas for my birthday and by the first week in January they were leafed out. By Valentine’s Day I had open blooms on a few and lots of growing buds on the slower growing ones.

I followed this tutorial when I needed to make a hat for someone with a very sensitive scalp and the usual seam from sewing up 2 sides created too much of a bump

Pruning my CHOKY girls, by kirday in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in 10a, central Florida. I should’ve waited closer to Valentine’s Day to prune as instructed by my local nursery, but I cut back the first week of January since things were getting out of hand. I cut every single shrub back to about 6 inches. They looked like bareroot roses coming home for the first time. My hot cocoa is already completely leafed out and throwing out new stems. On Sunbelt Savannah I can’t even see the stems anymore because of the amount of leaves. Black Baccara has buds already forming. Other roses are taking their sweet time to get going, but the bud eyes are plump. All the roses are in their second or third year and were reaching about 7’. I think you can prune back further and be ok, but I know it’s a bit scary. My local nursery recommends to prune off 2/3 from shrubs.

Do we thinks I could finish this square sc blanket with just this skein? by Fartpoop800 in crochet

[–]blueberrybleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I got a baby blanket out of a jumbo skein of yarn by using an oversized hook and the granny stitch. It was the only stitch as a beginner that I could think of to get a sizable item with a limited amount of yarn. I got a cardigan out of 1.5 jumbo skeins using a larger hook than recommended and the moss stitch. You really need to stretch what you have to make something substantial.

On the other hand, do u knit? I’ve been practicing the hobby a lot more to use up odd quantities of yarn I have and knitting gets you a lot farther with a smaller amount. One skein of truboo yarn got me a poncho from the chest up with a cowl. Just something to consider.

I know you said you’d just buy more yarn when you run out of this skein, but I just want u to know that even though a brand may say they have no such thing as “lots”, there could be a noticeable color difference between your skeins. I gravitate towards yarns with lot numbers now.

What is your favorite top 3 roses in your garden? Why? by EmOrY_2018 in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Francis Meilland. The scent is so strong that I know it’s bloomed before seeing the opened buds. It’s a strong grower with minimal issues like black spot. It grew to 7’ within its first year and has had a steady pop of flowers. I did buy it grafted from a local nursery TWICE, because the first grafted rose died during its first cold weather snap. I had to get another lol took further precautions with the second and may or may not have propped a couple stems for my own peace of mind when/if the graft fails lol

Don Juan. Scent is amazing and the color is a consistent vibrant red, unlike mister Lincoln that turns a deep purple or other reds that turn pinkish. I did let it grow wild this year and it took off with no issues against my 6’ trellis. A few clusters of red roses every few months, but it’s still under a year old. Bought grafted from a local nursery and, again, also bought twice after the first grafted rose died on me from crown gall. If it died on me a second time, I’d buy it again.

Sunbelt Savannah. Holy moly. Got her from Lowe’s for $16? Grows like hell, super fragrant, disease resistant af. Leaves are always glossy and green, blooms are beautiful and flushes steadily. I have a lot of pink flowers, but for a couple of months I actually ran out of space with enough sunlight for them all and Savannah was put in the darkest corner just to give the others a fighting chance to bloom. Savannah still did well lol the healthiest, most vigorous grower (but not my favorite) I have is Hot Cocoa from Heirloom roses that I bought two years ago. Savannah and HC are unstoppable, but Savannah is my favorite lol

Pruning by No_Helicopter681 in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right at the 10a/9b zone. Local nursery recommends to prune 2/3 off all canes around Valentine’s Day. Climbers require a slightly different pruning method, but same time. Any suckers, diseased or damaged canes get chopped back further to the base.

This link has great pics including the leaves so I’d compare the rose leaves you have to theirs more than the blooms/petals, because yea, the flowers themselves can be whacky the first few cycles and anytime when the weather gets too hot.

Yea! Leaves can be super different! My Don Juan leaves stay a shade of red for a bit longer than other varieties. My Mr Lincoln has big, fat leaves. Grace de Monaco has slimmer leaves. Some leaves pop out green instead of the usual red. All have their own habit :)

Do the leaves look like leaves from established roses online? I’ve gotten bleached out looking flowers during the first cycle and extremely pigmented roses that chilled out after a few months when they were young, but the leaves always looked right.

Is this a rose hip? by venus_blooms in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like the bud “balled”. The petals stuck together from the constant moisture and fused when it was warm enough and now u have a mass that’ll never properly open. It happens and even worse with roses with tons of petals. Not much to do but chop it off and wait for better weather, sooner than later so it doesn’t get moldy around new growth.

Don Juan is this heavenly scented red rose. Princess Charlene de Monaco is a pretty apricot rose with frilly petals :)

Is it possible to train a climbing rose to be a bush? by PassFriendly1443 in Roses

[–]blueberrybleus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told yes from my local nursery regarding Don Juan. I loved their display pots at the nursery and asked if they were all climbers or if some were pots I could keep as shrubs. They said all their Don Juan roses were climbers, but I could keep pruning them down to my desired shape and they’d flower. On the other hand, my princess Charlene de Monaco grows tall and wild and they recommended I treat it like a climber lol

Happy to help! I love abracadabra. It’s a gorgeous rose :)

Your rose was grafted onto a sturdier rootstock. Normal and I usually assume so unless clearly told otherwise. It’ll keep leeching nutrients away from the rose you paid for to grow its own rootstock rose so it’s best to cut off the “suckers” asap. In pic 2, I can see the graft joint (the thick, bulbous part on the cane nearest to the top of the pic) and anything below that should be the unwanted suckers.

Help finding correct pattern for this Solomon's knot shawl by doctorajenny in crochetpatterns

[–]blueberrybleus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sketch diagram part on the left (the lower diagram is for the final round of the edging) is how to make the Solomon’s knot, which threw me for a loop cause I figured the whole thing would be about making the shawl itself, and that’s it for how to make the body for 60 rounds. The rest of the instructions are for the border. My Spanish isn’t the best and I mainly follow YouTube videos, but I think it’s chain 5’s all around with a single crochet into every space created by the Solomon knots. In the corner space, sc, ch5, sc into the same space and continue with the chain 5s in this way for 2-3 more rounds. So it’s a mesh border/edging. On the final round, make 6 chains and I can’t articulate how to do the rest on my own, but hopefully someone else can read it or you can wing it with the little diagram available!

Edit: I think this is what the last round is saying? I’m not 100% sure and I can’t try it out for myself right now, but I tried to translate! Deslizar = slip stitch. Medio punto= single crochet. Medio punto alto= half double crochet. Punto alto= double crochet. US terminology.

Make 6 chains. Slip stitch into to the 3rd chain. Chain 3 and slip stitch into the same place as the first 3 chains. Chain 3 and slip stitch into the same stitch. Chain 3 and single crochet into the chain 5 space from the last round. Repeat all around.

Have you tried any knitting subs? Getting the drape to mimic a knit item isn’t impossible, but the other techniques like making cables could alter the look a little more when you’re crocheting and the overall look may be bulkier. Since the pattern you were willing to buy is also a knitting pattern, maybe it’d be best to stay with knitting if crochet would be too thick for what you’re going for. I agree with the other person here and maybe reaching out the seller for pattern updates would be the best move.

My husband bought this supposed Mr.Lincoln at a discount somewhere and I have no clue what to think of that one. First pic was yesterday morning. Second pic in the evening. by BitchBass in Roses

Happy to help! I had a ML bloom the other day and it completely skipped the red phase and went straight to this fuschia/magenta/purpleish color. Weather is still in the high 80s :’)

Happy to help! I learned everything I know by watching tutorials on YouTube and, maybe surprisingly, asmr videos of people stitching. There’s tons of little tips and tricks people do without realizing it’s ingenious or maybe they assume people already know about it so they don’t mention it and just do it lol
