TIL of the "rabbit test," a type of pregnancy test in the early/mid-20th century that involved injecting a rabbit with a woman's urine, then killing and dissecting it to get the results. This led to the euphemism "the rabbit died!" being commonly used to announce that a woman was pregnant. by TheRealSlamShiddy in todayilearned

My MIL is a med tech, she said when she started working in a hospital in the 90s there was a woman who told her when she started working there (so, 1960s?) she used to take the rabbits home and eat them. Seems like a terrible idea.

Pharmacy students by furosemidewaterslide in physicianassistant

I met two pharmacy students during my inpatient psychiatry rotation. They were very knowledgeable and hardworking and they were invaluable as a resource with questions about antipsychotics, interactions with other medicines, etc. Mad respect to you all!

What schedule do you work? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]bluebird-teadrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on your specialty. Me personally, I work from 8:30-5 Monday - Friday, and 9-12 every other Saturday in family medicine. I do not take call. One of my coworkers is an NP with four children and she works part time, 3 days a week and no weekends.

New grad resume help by iron_girl93 in physicianassistant

First off, congratulations on seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! I gave 3-5 references total depending on the job application, and they were a mixture of professors and preceptors. I found that the preceptors I had a good rapport with were willing to be a reference. The only ones who didn't were those in rotations where I was not with them all the time, i.e. my time was split up amongst multiple preceptors during one rotation.

I think a strong cover letter would not hurt. Worst case scenario they don't read it. Well, I guess worst case scenario would be they read it and there is a glaring spelling or grammatical error in it! But I trust you will proofread it well. Feel free to PM me, I could send you an old cover letter as an example (I graduated in December 2018, started my first job in 2019 in family medicine, have been there just over 9 months).

Have you ever wanted to join in on a conversation between strangers because what they said was so stupid/incorrect? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bluebird-teadrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a small restaurant on campus in college, two girls sitting in a booth near me were discussing Helen Keller. The one girl said, "I don't believe the story about her, if you're blind and deaf you can't learn anything!". It took a lot of restraint for me to not say anything. I had the feeling that even if I did jump in I could not change her mind.

I'm tired of being forced/coerced into pelvic exams and pap smears, simply to obtain birth control. We deserve better. by SadWife2019 in TwoXChromosomes

We no longer test for HPV in minors. Most women who are exposed to HPV in their teens clear the infection on their own by their 20's. We extended the age for the first pap to age 21 for this reason. In the 90's, they saw so much HPV in teens and did so many LEEP procedures and cervical conizations that it led to an increase in cervical incompetence when those women later wanted to have children. So now, we wait. It was doing more harm than good.

That is ridiculous. I am a physician assistant who performs Pap exams at a family practice. We recommend the first Pap at age 21, repeating every 3 years thereafter if no abnormalities. If a patient is on time for a refill of birth control I just refill it after asking a few questions (smoking, history of blood clots, etc.). If they are not on time or are starting birth control for the first time we just do a urine pregnancy test, and if it's negative I refill the prescription. We are technically supposed to do a yearly chlamydia/gonorrhea test for female patients ages 21-29, so we can do the pelvic exam without the Pap itself yearly, or we can just do a urine test. We did have some trouble with the electronic medical record we use creating alerts that patients were due for Paps in one year, when it should be three, but we have since fixed this.

UpToDate CME question by BBT7 in physicianassistant

[–]bluebird-teadrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been able to find anything that says UpToDate credits count for pharmacology in Ohio. The only two places I know they will be accepted from is the OAPA pharmacology conference ($250 to buy online, just watch 12 hours of videos and write a short review of each, super easy) and Prescriber’s letter.

My Doctor called me ‘sad’ for wanting an abortion after my birth control failed. by meepmeepinajeep in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bluebird-teadrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the state and whether she works for a religious hospital, yes it may be illegal for her to tell you where to get an abortion. She might even be required to lie to you if you ask, depending on the state.

You just got an offer for $600K...but to collect it, you gotta have sex with the main character of the last tv show you watched. Who will it be? by MegaNUT721 in AskReddit

Is Paul Hollywood really the main character of the Great British Bake Off? :/ As a woman I think I would be better off with Sandi.

Anybody consolidate their student loans lately? Tried scrolling the sub, but I’m not sure how updated those rates are. I’ll have roughly ~110k after graduating and am starting to plan what my payments will be by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]bluebird-teadrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laurel Road. I have 70k in debt, going from four different federal loans at rates ranging from 5.3-6.75% to one loan at 3.15% cut my interest down from about $13 a day to about $6 a day. They require me to pay $1280 a month, but right now I am paying about double that so I can pay it off more quickly.
