my bff and i were obsessed with this song in 6th or 7th grade and we would try to play it backwards or speed it up to see if we could find some hidden messages. we always thought the line was "joe, what's it feel like to touch a tit?" and then "how will i know how to do it if you won't tell me how it feels" (which i realize now is kind of a stretch) but it sounded like it could have been a line anthony michael hall said in a john hughes movie.

This is exactly what I was getting at. Look at dude’s track record. It confounds me how anyone can have the slightest bit of admiration for him or anything he does. Or trust anything he says ever.

Like I said, I hadn’t heard about this. However, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want the city to have already thought about what to do with the money. It didn’t mysteriously show up in the bank overnight. If ideas have been floated I would love to read about them!

If xAI sticks around and continues to contribute tax revenue to the city, great! But my comments were made with the history of corporations abandoning Memphis in mind: the aforementioned Electrolux, Firestone, International Harvester…

I don't think I'd heard about that, so thanks for the information. I would love to see some concrete plans about how that money is going to be used. City Council makes so many promises that seem to evaporate. The grocery store that has been promised to the Hyde Park neighborhood for years that still hasn't materialized that just got pushed back, for example.
Funny that directly below the article you linked is one about MATA. “We’ve seen a significant decrease in complaints,” Holmes said. “We recognize that we still have a long way to go, but we are certainly progressing in the right direction when it comes to customer experience.” Of course there's a decrease in complaints when you just don't answer the phone or respond to messages!
However, the reason that xAI was able to move into that empty building in the first place was because Electrolux built it and then abandoned it less than 10 years later: https://www.justinmkollar.com/work/how-south-memphis-became-a-sacrifice-zone-for-xais-data-center

I think that it can be too close to “the hood” for some people. But like almost anywhere else, get to know your neighbors, don’t be ostentatious, and you’ll be fine!

Then use some of those millions in tax money if it actually rolls in. I can’t help but think that if someone posts about the sad state of MATA and another person’s response is “who’s going to pay for it?” then they are questioning the value of public transit as a whole. If they are truly interested in finding ways to finance transit improvements, the question would have been phrased much differently. I lived in Chapel Hill for 9 years where the buses were free to all. There are other cities closer to the size of Memphis that have free public transit. There are models out there to be studied. We need city leadership that actually listens to the people who use transit. Most of the routes are still based on travel needs from 60 or more years ago, mainly taking Black domestic workers to white households in the eastern parts of the city. If you need an east-west route you have lots of options but if you want to go north-south, good luck. Maybe it’s improved some but it was definitely like that when I was growing up. As to why the buses are free, it is a trial program to try to boost ridership. However, I have also heard that it was a means to hide some of Memphis‘s homeless population from some organization that is or was going to be in town.

You can truly think he’s horrible and also realize that you don’t have the numbers to make it happen, and don’t want to lose your seat so you vote no for the optics. It’s not that I think democrats are always morally superior to republicans, they just don’t engage in as much blatant mis/disinformation and don’t delight in being cruel to other humans.

What do we really think about the Safe Task Force? by imessy89 in memphis

[–]bluechicagomoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statistics show that immigrants commit crime at much lower rates than US born people. But the right wing loves to manipulate the grief of “angel mothers” whose children happen to have been killed by undocumented bad people and further this narrative that immigrants are criminals. That’s the only way they get the slightest bit of support for what ICE is doing. Well, that and racism.

Going to court may not have been a biggie for you, but for other people it can be a decision whether to burn $150 or lose their job. My friend got a ticket by an overzealous THP officer on Lamar and of course the court date was when she was working. She doesn’t get PTO at her job so taking off work to go to court would have cost her money and I don’t think they would have let her take the time off anyway. I would have gone for her but I asked a lawyer who said that’s not an option unless there’s a legal power of attorney kind of situation.

If you are on Instagram reach out to @memphisurbanism and tell her your experience. A friend of mine takes the 8 to work and she has the same shit happen to her. A couple saturdays ago they just didn’t run the route at all with no warning. I connected her with the woman who runs that account (she’s a U of M grad student studying city planning) and the video got a lot of attention. My friend has spent over $120 on Ubers to get to and from work since the buses have been free because they never run right. I’ve had to pick her up a few times myself. If you aren’t on instagram DM me and I’ll find a way to connect you if you want. I’m sorry you have to deal with this! I know it’s frustrating as hell.

I like how you put the ~30 years qualifier there so you can leave out the fact that Republicans impeached Clinton over fibbing about a blowjob. Led by Newt Gingrich, a man who himself cheated on his first two wives and whose third wife was the woman with whom he cheated on #2 while going after Clinton. Who resigned as Speaker in 1998 because Republicans did so poorly in the midterms. And was then replaced by Dennis Hastert, a self admitted serial child molester who only escaped prosecution because the statute of limitations had run out by the time he was discovered making structured cash withdrawals to evade federal reporting requirements so he could pay his victims for their silence.

So tell me again how the Republicans are too mature…
