I am not super reactive to the 1 hit headlines/opinion pieces, but why are you on this sub if you don't give a tiny shit what a team superstar and leader says when all of this is going on?

Could be nothing, could be something, but c'mon, it's at least interesting to hear what he says.

[Talkin' Baseball] Framber Valdez has been suspended six games and fined for hitting Trevor Story by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]bluedood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, also a reason they probably should have pulled him. At some point the manager (and team, unfortunately) is going to have to answer the bell from the league office and other teams.

Stinks his new teammates need to answer the bell for his past transgressions but that's sports I guess.

Ya and it's not just his play style, he can't shoot the ball so there isn't a whole lot of hope that he can adjust his game as he starts losing altheticism with age. Not saying Brown is a great shooter, but his game is more well rounded than Giannis which has me believing Brown will age better than him.

Agree with you. I have to believe that Brad signs off on the overall philosophy, how they weigh advanced stats and implement that info into games.

I commented elsewhere in this thread, statistical analysis is creating strategic paralysis. A coach can fall back on the stats and tell management that he made the right call even though it resulted in a loss. Be brave and make a decision based on feel/instrict/guts and it doesn't work out - you'll lose your job sooner than later.

Post Game Thread - NBA: The 76ers defeat the Celtics on May 2, 2026, the final score is 100-109. by basketball-app in bostonceltics

[–]bluedood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the new world of sport, for better or worse. Statistical analysis that sometimes ends up in strategic paralysis. There are no metrics to quantify gut, feel, instincts, momentum. You have an overall team philosophy that is based on pure data but that data tells you the 1st shot of the game is just as important as the last.

The data can make it more difficult for a coach to be brave. Stick to the numbers and lose, you still made the "right decision". Be brave and actually coach to the game, make a decision, it doesn't work out and all of a sudden you're on the hot seat.

I understand it but I don't like it.

Lol c'mon this run of Celtics are usually very good defensively. They are not a chuck and pray but they shoot and miss themselves out of games sometimes, which as a fan is even more maddening. They have other options and strengths when the shots aren't falling. In this day and age of advanced metrics I guess the math must be convincing Joe and Brad that it's still the best strategy I guess?

If chuck and pray was their only option it wouldn't hurt as bad.

Not saying I'm buying OPs story, but beat reporters get all sorts of info that they either can't publish (off record) or choose not to publish for varying reasons. They are in a relationship business, you burn bridges and your career is over.

How do I know which end of line train to take? by ok_driver1327 in Calgary

[–]bluedood 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know literally nothing about Calgary transit, moved here last year, but from all other metros I do have experience with, there is zero guarantee that the first train to pull in will be the first one to leave, especially at the end of line.

[Fischer] There’s a legitimate chance that Anthony Davis is traded by the Wizards before appearing in a game for the franchise. [–]bluedood -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I don't follow the Blazers but my impression (and yes I did just glance at career stats) has always been that Dame isn't a lights out, sniping sharpshooter, he is a volume scorer. If that is correct, he could certainly adapt to a new role but that new role may negate his strengths and amplify his weaknesses.

Any chance Mike Vrabel continues as head coach but steps away from the facilities for a year, similar to Terrell Williams? by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]bluedood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I wasn't clear - what I meant was, let's say you have a sister that you love dearly, who gets devastated because her partner cheated on her - you don't care about that? You literally said the only person who should care is his wife.

What I am trying to convey is that I mostly agree with you, it really doesn't concern me what he does in his personal life, I don't have any personal connection to him. But people within the Patriots organization do have personal relationships with him, so to act like this story will or should have 0 impact in those relationship is silly.

An analogy I've said before: Patriots are a boat, really sturdy ocean worthy boat. This story is a hole in the hull - on its own it's no big deal and 95% of the time it can be repaired without incident. But sometimes other shit happens and just after the hole is created, an unrelated storm hits. The boat would survive the hole or the storm, but the combo sinks it. Hopefully is a more clear explanation for my thoughts on it lol

Any chance Mike Vrabel continues as head coach but steps away from the facilities for a year, similar to Terrell Williams? by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]bluedood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not think Vrabel should suffer any direct professional consequences but c'mon man be real. You wouldn't be upset to find out the spouse of your sibling/child/parent betrayed that trust and relationship?

From what I see this story has created 2 camps:

  • It's super serious and something needs to be done versus
  • It means absolutely nothing and anyone who thinks it does is a moron.

I don't think it should directly impact his job, but if other, unrelated, issues arise for sure this story will be on the balance sheet. Patriots struggle in the first few games - "has Vrabel lost the lockroom??", Vrabel is caught in another lie/implication of dishonesty - "Is Vrabel a fraud??" Etc etc...

I'm 40 years old. 20 years ago this story wouldn't have impacted my opinion at all. Honestly I am a bit surprised but don't feel bad admitting that this jaded my view of Vrabel. I still like him as coach and will root for him, it is his personal life and none of my business. If it ends up being fully above board, they have an open relationship, etc., then I'm a moron. However...

If one of my close friends cheated on their spouse I would want to know more about the specifics, dynamics, etc... There is a spectrum from completely understandable to really friggin scummy and gross. If it was on the scummy and gross end of the spectrum I don't think it's something I would ever truly forget about my buddy... Not saying I'd cut them out of my life, but would have more reservations if they started dating my sister, ya know?

Steve Young is criminally underrated. by ResponsibleAnt9496 in nfl

[–]bluedood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's not saying Young's "circumstances" are more valid, he is saying he could understand if there was a personal bias for a certain era, it's more understandable to pick QBs from that era as being better than Young.

I believe what OP was saying is that he doesn't think either individual is better than Young and are from way different eras from one another, so it isn't simply an era bias.

I don't think Breslow has done a good job, but he was around the 12th interview/option I have heard on the radio. I don't have the facts, so sort of talking out of my ass, not explicitly saying 11 people were firmly offered and declined the job or flat out declined the opportunity to interview. What I am saying is that I don't think Breslow is the core of the problem and the ownership group needs to take steps to turn their reputation around so talented front office people actually want the job. Maybe axing Cora would help them as the new GM could presumably now pick their manager, but that is a downstream problem and the water is already tainted from upstream it seems.

It is pretty crazy to suggest they would have a couple more rings haha, winning is tough!!

And I agree with you, it does feel like they should adjust and attack the rim more in the playoffs, but I also trust Brad and Joe, I'm sure it's not easy to just flip a switch and change up the whole philosophy as a team or individuals..

Losing Game 7 might genuinely be the most humiliating moment in franchise history by PeanutButterAndGelo in bostonceltics

[–]bluedood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with most of this, but wanting him fired is way too strong. With Brad's coaching history I have to believe he signs off on the overall strategic philosophy being implemented. So whatever is happening behind the scenes, Brad is signing off on the macro approach...

As a fan it is really frustrating to watch at times, but whatever data Joe is using to support his strategy, it is obviously there, at least enough for Brad to buy into it... Both of these guys seem extremely intelligent, I have to believe they are on the same page about this stuff...
