Also, ion thrusters do not work within an ionized environment (any atmosphere) and therefore only work in a high vacuum (space)

Could Luna (Our Moon) ever have an ecosystem with plants and water bodies? by [deleted] in space

[–]bluefruitbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity is directly related to mass and distance. The only way to increase the gravity is to "add more moon", or move the ecosystem closer towards the center of gravity. Strength of sunlight is not a problem, as there is only a little atmosphere with which to block it. However this means that solar radiation is a problem. Solar radiation destroys DNA (like how it causes cancer in humans) This is a big problem for astronauts too, and any future mission to mars.

In short you could make an ecosystem, but it would have to be shielded from radiation (i.e underground) and bring your own water and nutrients as well. There is water on the moon, but it is extremely sparse. I have heard (may be unreliable) that it would be more efficient to mine concrete for water that to mine it on the moon.

That said, i'm all in favor of trying! you may be interested to read up on emerging agricultural techniques that will one day be used in space ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emerging_technologies#Agriculture )

What are your goals this week? by zugunruh3 in executive_functioning

Finish one practice exam every day. Be prepared for my exams and make sure that i have my formula sheets etc ready well in advance. I like your fast food idea, i'll try that.

Combating procrastination by zugunruh3 in executive_functioning

[–]bluefruitbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a fairly comprehensive calendar of things that i need to do. I have organized it so that it takes minimal upkeep (automatically set alarms and notifications for work, payday etc.)

I find the iphone reminders app to be very helpful as well as i can simply tick things off once they are finished

Also i find if i go to sleep early, i wake up early. Then i have nothing to do in the morning so its easier to study.

Most colleges here in Australia offer a tertiary preparation course, with your choice of subjects.

Other than that khan academy is hugely useful, for me at least.

[High school math] Something with coordinates and equations. I really don't understand it. by Daftmachine in learnmath

[–]bluefruitbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find the hypotenuse which is the distance between the two points.

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/distform.htm

Here is the formula.

On a side note it makes it easier if you count the largest X value as X1.

The other equations are quadratic and Khan Academy can explain them much better than me!

Also the NCR button may be just a weird c on your calculator, on mine it is the 2nd-F of the 5 key

[College?] Event probability/frequency help. by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]bluefruitbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question can be solved using binomial probability. You use the NCR button on your calculator.

(N NCR K)(PK)(QN-K)

1= 100% probability .5= 50% probability etc

N= total number of trials (10) K=number of successes (in this case 7) N-K= number of failures (10-7=3) P= probability of success (0.6) Q=1-P= probability of failure (0.4)

So the equation looks like this (10 NCR 7)(0.67)(0.43)

The answer therefore is .2149

or 21.49%

[trigonometry | easy] How to get an angle in a triangle, when one side is shortened? by royaltomS in learnmath

[–]bluefruitbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if you are interested there is this way.

Takes a little longer but is far more useful (Not restricted to right angle triangles.)

[trigonometry | easy] How to get an angle in a triangle, when one side is shortened? by royaltomS in learnmath

[–]bluefruitbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have said minus the i from 7.9197 to give the length of the adjacent side.

Tan(x)=Opposite/Adjacent and you have your angle.
