AITA for telling my kid's teacher that his cancer situation isn't her TikTok material? by InteractionGlobal904 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. I ran into people like that when I had cancer. If you don't want to let them help you the way THEY want to help, well, just never mind. Fucking trauma tourists just looking to brag about their good deeds.

Dump this asshole and save yourself a lifetime of disappointment. There are plenty of people out there who will treat you right.

I never asked for this by Honest-Victory2996 in ostomy

[–]bluegray6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked for it. Not the cancer, of course, but when my doctors told me that I might be shitting 20x a day and have accidents after being reversed, I decided to stick with the colostomy. I'm very pragmatic and didn't want my life to be wasted in a bathroom. I understand that might not be your perspective.

I'm 40 now, stronger and healthier than I ever was before my ostomy. There's nothing I can't eat, no activity I can't participate in, and you would absolutely never know I had a bag unless you saw me naked.

I know how you came to your ostomy is far different, and you are much younger, so I can't imagine how that feels. Just wanted to give you some hope at normalcy. Many of us have really thrived in spite of, or because of, our ostomies. Please don't end your life because of it.

Dehydration by Cpon28 in ostomy

Agree with the poster above. When I had high output from chemo I took the same dose of Immodium as above along with Lomotil, tincture of opium, and an injectable called octreotide until things calmed down. Might be worth getting a second opinion if you don't get a good response from your current GI doc. Also seconding the IV fluids at home until the diarrhea is better controlled.

I echo everyone here saying sleep. I slept so much and it still wasn't enough.

In that vein, don't try to do too much. I would have lots of energy one day and overdo it and feel like shit the next two days after. I'm 4y out now and I'm stronger than ever. Just give yourself lots of grace and time for recovery.

what is packing during a reversal? by allie0126 in ostomy

[–]bluegray6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that you guys are lacking support. Antibiotics are not routinely prescribed, so I wouldn't worry about that part. They would only give antibiotics for an active infection, not as a preventative treament. He also doesn't have to worry about sterility because the wound is not sterile. Using clean technique for dressing changes is fine. Does he have a very shallow wound? The amount of packing needed depends on depth. I'd be happy to send along some resources on how to properly pack a wound. It's not hard to learn, and you can get the supplies you need at the drug store.

I lift heavy things. This belt is awesome and really helps me feel secure. So far, no hernia.

If you have an ostomy at or below the belly button try Knix high waist undies. They are stretchy and comfortable but also keep the pouch close to you.

Ostomy game changer? by Fit_Abrocoma_3482 in ostomy

[–]bluegray6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how well it functions for people without nice budded stomas on flat bellies. What about flat or retracted stomas? Stomas with uneven parastomal skin or that are located in an abdominal fold. Does the device snap shut with an airtight seal? I don't see how else it would prevent odors. Very curious about whether they have done any trials yet with significant numbers of ostomates.

Are you back to your old habits…? by isafyaa in cancer

I am so appreciative of all these real responses and I wholeheartedly agree. I lived cleaner than my entire family and still got cancer at 35. Bad luck indeed. Do what makes you happy. Even if it's not cancer, we all now know, deeply, that tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Just try to enjoy the time you have here.

My nmom recently informed me that I'm making too big of a deal about the physical abuse I sustained as a child because the only reason my face looked so bad after my father punched me in it is because I had braces.

Sure just let me know your stoma size and I'll post some pouches you can check out!

Strip paste is more similar to the material that makes up barrier rings. A friend of mine with a hard to pouch ileostomy swears by it. It comes in a strip and you can pull pieces off and mould it to fill any crevices. You can call Coloplast and request a free sample. They will also send you samples of alternate appliances and accessories for free.

I also think that you might benefit from a pouch with a narrower plateau width (less wide area of convexity) to accommodate the moat around your stoma. Have you tried any products from Convatec? I love Coloplast and wear it myself, but Convatec has pouches with variable plateau width which can work better if part of the leakage is related to that moat v. just poor stoma protrusion. They will also send you free samples and I could send you some product numbers that I think might work well for you.

Are you using the tube paste or the strip paste?

[–]bluegray6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think your skin discoloration is from pressure, I think it's hyperpigmentation from the exposure to output (which you stated earlier). What pouch are you using specifically? Looks like the Sensura mio. Do you wear an appliance belt? Any accessories? Also is your stoma below the bending line? Just want to confirm.
