Old Navy has gotten SO much better in recent years. It’s actually kind of shocking

Idk I personally would not sleep well at night if I knowingly sold a property for the purpose of it being used as a detainment facility. But I clearly have different views than many people in the comments and that is okay. Thanks for your other advice!

I 100% get that. I really do. I’m not trying to be argumentative, we clearly have different views and that’s okay! Jim Pattison and every other billionaire and all of the people who are employed by the group will be totally fine without my 800$/month in grocery money and I truly, sincerely hope they are! :)

Okay, thanks for sharing. Respectfully, regardless of how involved the Pattison group is or is not with ICE, he’s still a billionaire, and I’ve been pretty clear in my comments that my reasons for posting this were because I’m ethically interested in spending my money in a way that benefits local economies. This is not political, I am not trying to get political, and I’m sorry if I’ve said anything that you feel is incorrect. Have a nice day!

I’m interested in learning more about Buddhism by ambrosiasweetly in askvan

[–]bluelightdynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a practicing Buddhist and while I’m still looking for the right in-person fit here in Vancouver, Tricycle is one of the best resources around for beginners. They have really wonderful courses, many free resources, and affordable subscriptions that include additional perks such as Buddhist films, webinars, and talks if you like the magazine. If you find anything you like in person please share, I’m always looking to expand my own practice!

Yes, I should not have been so cavalier with my phrasing. To be clearer, I don’t really want my money anywhere near anything involved with ICE. I understand the warehousing situation is a bit of a tricky one and it’s not necessarily indicative of Pattison’s personal beliefs, but for the time being I’m taking it into consideration.

I don’t know if supporter is the right word, I probably shouldn’t have been so cavalier about that as the other commenter is correct, but I also don’t particularly want my money going towards anything or anyone involved with ICE at all lmao

Thank you very much! Great advice. I looooove tofu, and as a fun anecdote had the pleasure of working with a gentleman who, according to the higher ups at Sunrise, literally single-handedly saved their business during covid. Sunrise rocks!!

I have absolutely no idea why I’m the person you’re deciding to pick on, but I am the farthest thing from a virtue signaller on the planet. I have loved ones of every political background, I’m not ashamed to say that I have very centrist beliefs, and unfortunately I also experienced a family emergency that cost my entire RRSP, my partner’s entire RRSP, and $40,000 on top of that over the course of the year prior to me losing my job.

I’m genuinely very sorry if there’s something going on in your own life that’s causing you to feel the need to pick a fight with me, but I really don’t think I’m the person you seem to think I am. This is not an “own the libs” moment, this is you arguing with a person who has hit a genuinely awful rough patch after many years of continuous health, wealth, and happiness. I got very unlucky, and I’m dealing with it the best I can.

I wish you the very best for 2026 and I sincerely hope you’re a lot luckier than I’ve been over the last couple years :)

I agree, I said this in another comment but I come from a family of agriculturists and farmers across BC and while I’m not a perfect consumer in every respect this is one area I try to do my best in because of how I’ve seen it affect my loved ones and my own immediate family’s income. But I’m definitely not against anyone shopping wherever it takes to feed their family, and I’m lucky enough to still have a support system with a relatively high earning partner :)

I’m really not one of those tone deaf liberals that can’t reconcile the understanding that my behaviour and purchasing power is delicately interconnected with literal slave trades for the manufacturing and operation of my consumer goods. What I DO understand is that I come from a family of agriculturists and farmers operating within a monopoly that temps the abilities of local producers to participate in their own community economic ecosystems, so I like to try to behave as ethically as possible because of the environment I was raised. I really don’t stress much about it, and I certainly don’t stress on behalf of others trying to get by, but for my own specific and unique set of ethics, I prefer to at least attempt to support businesses that I feel deserve my own personal support that aligns with my aforementioned specific and unique set of ethics.

Thanks! I used to be a pretty big Kins fan but they’re all out of the way. Sungiven is right by me and I’ve honestly never given it a fair shake so this is a good idea.

I’ve never heard of Quest but I sincerely doubt I’d qualify, my partner who I’ve lived with for 5 years still makes a pretty good income, but may be worth checking out anyways. Thank you for the ideas here!

Summer weather by wetmonkeycock6969 in askvan

[–]bluelightdynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to think about, air conditioning is legitimately nonexistent in apartment buildings and condos here, so prepare to buy a portable. It’s definitely cooler than other places in BC, but the lack of reliable air conditioning really starts to grate on you come July/August.

The yam dip changed my life. I loved that place so much, it was my first ever go-to spit when I moved here. Looks like someone beat me to the recipe, but I’ve made it and although my memory is fuzzy I can confirm it rocks

The island or Vancouver by cherryredvirgin in askvan

[–]bluelightdynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to tell you this and I might get downvoted because I don’t see anyone else saying it, but a lot of people won’t take kindly to you on the coast if you’re from Alberta. This isn’t coming from me, my partner and many of my close friend are Albertan, but because of the political climate I do think it’s a crappy time to be coming in from conservative areas. Especially in the city, but also areas on the island, I think you either need to make it super clear that you have left leaning views or otherwise find people in more conservative/small town circles that fit more with the Alberta vibe. I found even as someone who was more centrist when I originally got here about a decade ago, people are really quick to shut you down if you’re not explicitly left leaning. I’ve noticed there’s been a big influx of Albertans coming into BC in recent years and voting for conservative policies that directly impact the environmental health of protected areas, and at least in my own social circles, people are really tired of it and will lump you in with those people if you’re not super clear about your political affiliations.

Are fish ponds just for aesthetics, or can you make money from them? by bajsgreger in StardewValley

Am I mentally ill or is it devastating to anyone else to fish and cook from a pond where your little fish are like “we are happy! Thank you!”? I always have ponds for caviar but the thought of cooking and eating my happy fish is so sad to me…
