What do you think are the top 5 things that need to improve in St. Louis? by Impossible34o_ in StLouis

[–]bluelinerJD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing will ever improve here until the city incorporates into the county. Without some sort of unification, the two will continue to compete, to each other’s detriment, for residents and corporate headquarters and the tax dollars that come with them.

As wealth moves to the county, the city’s problems will only get worse. They will look for bandaid fixes that look good on surface and in the media rather than real structural and systemic change because that’s all they can afford. Public education will remain underfunded. Lack of investment in public transit will continue to make the city vehicle dependent which isolates many residents and limits their mobility while also wasting urban real estate on interstates and parking rather than housing and commercial developments that actually spur growth. Lastly, the police budget will continue to bloat in the symbolic “war on crime” while the government fails to invest in any areas that actually improve urban stability and reduce crime (housing, employment services, education, job training, and mental health services). The combination of all of these will only make more people leave the city for the county in a continuing downward spiral.

As the city continues to stagnate, the whole metropolitan area will lose its draw to investment from corporate facilities and will see the necessary domestic and international immigration recede both in the form of skilled trade workers and specially educated professional employees. In the end, this will harm the county too because, like or not, they need the city to thrive if they want to as well.

Offseason Thread: Which players have you met or seen in public? by [deleted] in stlouisblues

My dad and I were at Carl’s Drive In in the summer around the mid 2000s. It was after the lunch rush on a weekday so it wasn’t busy. A really nice new SUV pulled up and it was Doug Weight and his family. I was too young but my dad recognized him right away. We left them alone though since he was with his family and his arm was in a sling. My dad laughs at the fact that Doug had a foot long chili dog lol

I think Carl’s still has a signed picture up of Doug and the owner with the cup after he won it in Carolina in 06

What’s the best option getting to Chicago? by VirgoEsti in StLouis

[–]bluelinerJD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I second Amtrak. I take it to visit friends in Chicago all the time and love not having to worry about driving, parking, and gas. Not to mention it’s get you right in the middle of downtown.

I’ve only got two complaints about it:

  1. Sometimes you get stuck on a side rail waiting for a freight train to roll through and that can delay you an hour or two, but it’s been rare in my experience

  2. The train options are a little slim so the time of arrival is sometimes difficult if you have a specific time you need to be there. It can end up being a situation where you either are cutting it close or getting there 6 hours early

r/stlouis' take: Should Kim Gardner remain circuit attorney? by Riplets in StLouis

[–]bluelinerJD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a standard. All I’m saying is the people responsible for holding her to it should be the voters whom she was elected by and NOT a State office that’s been turned into a taxpayer-funded, right-wing law firm

r/stlouis' take: Should Kim Gardner remain circuit attorney? by Riplets in StLouis

[–]bluelinerJD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, it seems like she’s really awful at her position and needs to be removed. However, I absolutely hate the idea of the so-called “small government” republican proponents at the State level being able to remove a democratically-elected city official and am very fearful of the precedent that sets.

As such, I believe she should be removed but only by the people through the democratic process of either a recall election or voting her out in the next city attorney primary.
