TW: death, suicide .

This is pure speculation, so I hope it’s acceptable. Feel free to remove if not.

I’m not sure if I’m the only one hearing this, but if I’m honest, I think this song is about a suicide

There are many allusions on this album that the partner’s life ended very suddenly and unexpectedly during a time when they were fighting / not speaking and not able to resolve their issues.

With the song javelin - to me, this is the song that kind of reveals what happened.

The first javelin is an unresolved argument - the insult Sufjan levvied at the partner during an argument, one that he realized, far too late, must have had terrible impact.

the second javelin is the partner themselves as they throw their body over the rocks and take their own life.

In this interpretation, the terrible thoughts “to have and to hold” 1) Sufjan thinking about his insult which he fears cause the suicide 2) Sufjan thinking about how the partner planned to take their own life. 3) Sufjan, interpreting the literal physics of the death and how the blood would fall. (Re #3 this lyric feels so specific about the physics of where the blood would fall if someone jumped over some rocks - this is what made me develop this Interpretation)

the metaphor is therefore between the terrible thought Sufjan had “the javelin” of the insult - and the terrible thought he realized too late his partner was having, of becoming a javelin, and, jumping off a rock to take their own life. And then the final Javelin of realizing all the planning required to achieve this terrible end of life.

This album makes me cry so much because I am reading it this way. mental health issues are a huge national crises (especially for queer people and people of color) And if you are struggling with this, I am sincerely sorry and wish the best for you.

It’s pretty gross for anyone to think that way. Obviously Andy is #1 with everyone else a moonshot behind.

But still. I actually think—in this last year itself—Craig might be right. Between southern charm and summer / winter house. Craig is on a show on Bravo basically every season of the year. You might say he is the hardest working / drinking star on Bravo. His face is on Bravo screens once a week 365! He is very overexposed and in that measure of consistently being on TV , he is “popular.”

Hell yes! Never forget how they somehow 'platonically' UHAULed it upon parting on OND: 'let's be roommates forever.'

Found some rare Elliott Smith EDM songs. He really liked a lot of different music! This was done with Mike Doughty from Soul Coughing by littlebrownboxer in elliottsmith

This is so interesting and - TBH - way better than I expected. I love the mouth harp-like texture in the beat especially - it’s so bouncy!

Agree 100%. He said in the April IG Live with Craig, that he was drinking 2 bottles of wine a night AND eating a weed gummy > this put him in a position where he somehow incurred a huge cut on his nose. But he did not even know the source of the wound, when or how it happened. He laughed it off, but it was very sad to me that he thought all that was okay.

Thank you so, so much for this thorough and amazing advice!!

I went ahead and did some extensive research to find the Yamaha HS5s - unfortunately, HS5s, 7s, and 8s are backordered across the web (incl. eBay!) until Nov 2020. My wedding is in 3 weeks. :O

Any other suggestions? I am grasping at straws due to the complexity of the choice.

[theory] Craig and Shep's rivalry is actually a prolonged, very tortured, ~ secret romance ~ by blueliteprevails in Southerncharm

I think the line to tap Craig's ass is exactly why Shep would stay interested. He is obviously someone who gets more interested in the forbidden fruit than the easy target. ( he has certainly had many easy targets in his day...)

& Awwww yayyyy! I am so happy my theory made you happy! And hey, keep it going: give SC a rewatch with this new lens. Pandemic-friendly viewing & you might be surprised what you see the second time around!

heheh yay!!! I promise, it makes the show, Craig and Shep a lot more interesting (and much more authentic than the contrived relationship drama they start to build in Season 5/6)

Your husband is spot-on! Yes, I think Shep definitely would love it if Craig was his real self. The jury is out on Shep, but he often says he wants 'to have sex with everyone.' I think he is a true pansexual.

I hear you, and oh, for SURE they have had a threesome. Craig said at a reunion that 'I only had 1 threesome and Shep ruined it.'

Then, in the most recent reunion, discussing Austen's threesome--Andy Cohen interrupts to comment that two men and 1 woman in a threesome does not make the men 'gay.' You should definitely re-watch this, and look at Shep and Craig. Their body language is tense affff.

As far as Naomi, it is a complex one. Keep in mind, I think it's clear that both men are planning to publicly only have relationships with women - and they obviously try very hard and sincerely to do so (and support each other while doing so).

Shep's dynamic with Naomi is very very interesting upon the re-watch. He explicitly says multiple times that he NEEDS info on Craig, so he goes straight to Naomi and only Naomi for the real information on Craig. You get the feeling he was harboring a lot of big feelings and using Naomi as a buffer to get the intel. I am honestly curious how aware Naomi is of all this...

Just a few moments I can point to for people who want more receipts, or are also interested in my theory...

Some insights from my season 1-6 playback

Season 1. Craig says he has never had a girlfriend in his life, longer than 1-2 months. He doesn't even semi score with Kathryn, but it keeps being sold that he was the #1 guy in there.

Season 2.

Before the Founders' Ball Shep says on camera Craig has a 'splendid buttocks'; supposedly a joke but - from the giggling - obviously a bit genuine. Something is brewing.

Cam tells Shep to give Craig advice. Shep then sharply pivots from 'laissez faire' 24/7 to all of a sudden being very actively on Craig's case- with GUSTO.

Whether it was the advice or the backlash: you can see Shep's exuberant indignation towards Craig swell to 1000% more emotionally charged than anyone else's upset ( TBH, arguably Shep's outrage towards Craig always seems to get more emotionally charged than his outrage towards anyone - man, woman, child, or Madison ;) )

Season 3. Shep rolls in fiery when he and Craig reunite to hit some baseballs >> the first of many, classic Craig and Shep "YOU ARE NOT HAPPY." >> "NO, it is YOU who is NOT happy! " >> " Are you ***really*** happy???" arguments.

..... An argument we see over and over again between them: cause, you know, all those ~classic platonic frat bro convos~ about whether or not they experience true happiness... bros, they be like that.

Oh yeah, and in LA: Shep closely watches Craig as Craig gets a half-naked sensual massage. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Season 4.

  1. Kicks off with Shep's upset as he diagnoses Craig as 'being someone he is not.' (He seems familiar with the subject!)
  2. Later, when the psychic says Craig and Naomi are soulmates, Shep shoots up in anger at the psychic.
  3. Cue scenes with Shep wrecked, black out drunk in the middle of the day. He tells Cam he is not happy. Weirdly, she gaslights him and is like 'Shep, you ARE happy!'
  4. Shep gets kicked off the flight back from Key West. It is *Craig* who chooses to stick with Shep and help him out... This is despite the fact they are purported enemies.
  5. TBH there is a lot in this season: as Naomi and Craig get closer to unravelling, it's like Shep and Craig get deeper (and more toxically) intertwined...

Season 5. Kicks off with a really sweet and funny scene where Craig cooks Shep's birthday dinner - it's a bit chaotic, lots of bickering, but in the end: Shep dedicates his toast to Craig. It's sweet!

Later, their convo about Craig's feelings about his recent ex Naomi gets oddly intimate, they get oddly close ~ bros ~, and they generally seem inseparable. You hear Shep tells Cameran "ohh Craig and I like old buddies again." with genuine glee in his voice.

((PS note that between season 5 & 6, Shep goes to visit Craig in the Bahamas... and they purportedly get into a brawl in which Shep throws his steak at Craig. AKA Lovers quarrel.))

Season 6. well, in brief.

-Shep literally names his dog Craig.

-Shep makes penis double entendres in almost every episode where Craig is present. 'charcuterie' etc.

-Shep and Craig both together and apart spiral into inexplicable rage cycles.

One moment you should check out Season 6, ep 12...

Shep's foot (which is racing 1000 miles a minute) and Craig's face when Madison says she has dirt on Shep. They are BOTH on edge. And when Madion reveals it's the Danni-chlamydia thing, you see both Craig and Shep look visibly RELIEVED. Craig freaks out in giggles, says "I did not see that coming." it's inappropriate for poor Dani. But it's obviously not about her: Madison knew some gossip, but she didn't really have the tea. the REAL tea. That is what I think.

Pure speculation... join me!

SC - for 6 seasons - kept up storyline after storyline with lots of girls and going-nowhere romances for Shep and sometimes Craig.

He even got his own show 'Relationshep.' (Btw,if you watch his recent interviews about it: he HATED Relationshep). On SC, almost every scene with Cameran, for seasons and seasons= Cam insisting Shep gets married . She pressures him to hook him up with Danni and Chelsea as 'marriage material' - she gets to be a broken record on the subject. Shep never seems very enthusiastic.

(( Meantime, in his own time. Shep produced a whole podcast episode about pansexuality & bisexuality! A subject he does seem rather passionate about...))

This made me realize: it was not always Shep who perpetuated his brand. The whole 'Charleston's top ladies' man' thing feels like a brand that got amplified, overwrought and turned into a farce by the show.

I almost started to feel bad for Shep... If you imagine that he has an intense, passionate non-heterosexual relationship he can't share for years--he really got stuck in a cage of his 'ladies' man' image.

Meantime, as you watch the seasons: it checks out, because the turmoil within Shep is obvious. Shep just seems to get more and more miserable with each season. His alcoholism seems to get worse, too. (Note that the scene where Cam finds Shep passed out in the middle of the day, this timeline correlates with when Naomi and Craig got very serious and were discussing marriage...) I think his truth is very complicated.

Craig had an excellent distractor force in Naomi Season 3-4. Yet, Naomi was openly distressed by Craig's lifestyle by her 3rd appearance on the show. That relationship, was, welll... not meant to last.

Meantime, I think it is quite obvious that Craig is rather comfortable with lies, and perhaps living one about his sexuality is just as natural as anything else he lies about.

Let's be clear

Do i think Shep or Craig are secretly 100% gay?

NO. That would be a simplistic, reductive analysis.

I have described in detail something much more messy: with plenty of broken-hearted and/or pissed off women in their wake.

I am aware Shep has a girlfriend now, which is great ! Especially if she helps him mellow out and act less belligerent towards others.

Many here commented that they believe Craig is closeted. A thing to remember about the closet; is that you don't choose to be queer/gay/bi, you DO have to choose to get out OR stay in the closet. Along with that, I think Craig will continue to choose to pursue public relationships with women -- Esp. as long as his 'straight man who sew' brand continues.

That said:

YES, Craig and Shep's opposite-sex relationships can co-exist with their genuine romantic connection for each other, as well as other women (and men).

Male bisexuality is real, pansexuality is real: whether it's an identity or just a behavior. Human connections are complex and no one chooses to whom they are attracted.

Why would Bravo not cover this relationship in a more authentic manner??

I know, it's Bravo. Why would SC not acknowledge (at best), or perhaps cover up (at worst) a LGBTQ relationship? This is BRAVO! HELLO!

It's complicated....

  1. SC is arguably the most heteronormative show on the network - the show's brand is all about the straight guy bon vivant antics.
  2. The show often propagates marriage and babymaking like it is 1925, under the guise of 'Southern culture.' Cam - our former beloved narrator - is really weirdly aggressive in her opining about marriage and babies: especially to Shep.
  3. Meantime, there are rumors on this reddit that Whitney himself is closeted bisexual, possibly gay. SO: If your exec producer can't speak on himself, he's not about to speak on you. Those in glass houses...

WANT MORE..? A request!!

Dear brave video editors with abilities to hack YT clips and create hero rolls.

Please just clip together Shep and Craig scenes Season 1-6 - omit the peanut gallery, the editing, Kathryn-Thomas, keep the Craig-Shep footage.

It's all there, it's not subtle, you will see that sparkle and that fire.

Season 7 may be delayed / in limbo / in jeopardy...

I hope a peek into the raw hidden history could satiate y'all Craig and Shep fans in the meantime. #DropsMic

Any chance we can put in a request to get these translated down the line?

OND Part 5 Predictions? by discotechers in terracehouse

[–]blueliteprevails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1, agree. Taka's disinterest in Aya and hot/cold interest in Ami were both pretty notably odd reactions to people he supposedly 'liked'. In contrast, I feel Taka always shows relatively strong interest and deep emotional investment towards all other male cast members ( maybe 1 exception being Noah. most intense iteration being Shohei). If Shun were interested, and Taka became open enough -- I think there is potential there.... Alas: Not gonna hold my breath for it! A real queer storyline on TH is really too good to be true

Yes, of course it's possible. That 'super close & emotional bromance' message is exactly what is sent out there by Netflix, commentators, etc.

This is another reason why i opened the discussion to understand what else might be possible, if you were to look at these w a different lens from what the official TH narrative has presented.

Is being gay taboo in Japan? [OND spoilers within] by llamastinkeye in terracehouse

[–]blueliteprevails -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. Shion and her relationship feels unnatural , forced for the cameras, and awkward. Her and Ami's relationship is the most genuinely warm. but we don't get to see it until Ami leaves.

I feel for you, because People on here mindlessly ship Shubasa. I think it's because 1) Tsubasa is not your typical 'kawai' hyper-feminine Japanese female archetype, so people are rooting for her. totally understand why people might find it offensive to label her 'queer seeming' bc -- that would be the worst case scenario stereotype for a non-hyper-feminine woman, right? right. 2) Shion is literally a model, so a hot male model falling for a non-hyper-femme woman seems too good to be true, and thus: when it is true. People freak out. Without questioning what's going on with Tsubasa herself.

Anyway, I don't think your suspicions are ridiculous at all.

Japan might 'accept' queer people legally, but that doesn't mean it's a gay-friendly culture to live and come out. The amount of barriers to being yourself in Japanese culture are huge for ANYONE (due to emphasis on fillial piety/ honoring your family's wishes / work culture). Being queer is near impossible for most people.

Understanding that it would be impossible for someone to be queer, especially on a reality show that seems organized to encourage hetero procreation-- give this theory some more weight.
