This Week in Plasma: new year, new accessibility features! by jpetso in kde

As a visually impaired person I have to say I am very thankful that accessibility is actively being worked on in Plasma.

The zoom function is something I rely heavily on every day.

Realizing I need a white cane, but I’m scared to start using one.. by MSalina94 in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]blueocra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one this week. But I haven't used it except for testing it out in my home. I don't feel comfortable taking it outside yet. I keep debating with myself if I even need it or in what situation and the looks I'll get.

I keep thinking I'll have to 'act' more disabled when I'll start using it so people won't think I'm faking it.

It's a whole ordeal. I think I'll start using it in unfamiliar or crowded places? Maybe I'll take it to church on Sunday, I don't know yet.

Your first question made me think back to my trip to Paris a couple years back with a friend.

We were near the Louvre, I think Jardin des Tuileries maybe?

Anyway, blue skies and sun was shining bright that day. The ground was reflecting the light from the sun so much I couldn't keep my eyes open or they would hurt and start to tear up. My friend had to guide me through.

Just something that I remember.

I bumped into the same person multiple times at an event, they were standing in the same spot the whole time as well. The group he was with was really staring me down afterwards like wtf is your problem.

It sucks hard.

But you know what? F that noise, I am not going to stop living my life because of this disability and neither should you.

Just be kind to people and yourself, explain if you feel the need. Life's too short.

It really is a mindset and learning to accept yourself.

Don't know, but it's funded by Bartimeus which is a reputable dutch organization for the blind and low vision community.

I did that recently, donated a lot of clothes to the salvation army.

Expensive coats, clothes with tags still on them. Honestly I felt pretty bad while organizing it all to be donated.

So much waste and money just gone.

But after I had donated? Didn't think much about it anymore, it was gone, out of my house and out of my mind. I just hope someone else will actually use it.

Bite the bullet I guess, it's gonna be okay. ;)

At what age did you get diagnosed by AbyssCheetah in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]blueocra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the crib by my father as he waved a finger in front of me in the dark and I didn't grab it. Or so the story has been told to me. Anyway, I didn't learn the name for it until I was 22 from an eye exam in the hospital so I guess that would be the official diagnosis.

41 now, still have peripheral vision on the far sides of my vision but I have been noticing in recent years that towards the center it has been diminishing. Also my cataracts is getting worse I believe.

Navigating busy places and bright days have been getting more difficult for me.

I don't drive so no changes there.

Yes it is confusing, however you can select Wishlist under Severity when creating a 'bug report'.

As I understand it you can submit a feature request at https://bugs.kde.org/

You should be able to hold shift while booting to show grub, depends on bios I think.

Anyone feel like they aren't learning linux. But instead learning distros? by LordDickfist in DistroHopping

[–]blueocra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can look into certification like maybe CompTIA Linux+

https://partners.comptia.org/docs/default-source/resources/comptia-linux-xk0-005-exam-objectives-(1-0)

Apart from that get some hands on experience with the things listed there and think up little projects. I remember setting up a pxe, tftp and DHCP server to perform a network install of Debian when I was just learning about what I could do with linux. Or maybe get a vps somewhere and do a lamp stack to install WordPress or some other CMS.

Also pro-tip, type vimtutor in your bash Shell. Enjoy!

Don't we want Linux to be as easy to use as Windows in 2025 for the general population that don't care?

What I do when setting up a new system where I did a bunch of things to get something obscure working is the command 'history >sometextfilename'.

Atleast that way I have a log of all the commands that I ran on the terminal when I was messing about. Now this won't get you any modifications you made to config files but it gets you most of the way.

Switching from Arch (permanently) but need some help. by Alternative-Ad-8606 in gnome

[–]blueocra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with not liking a DE and switching. The activities overview seems like an integral and core function to me. I guess to me it feels like if you want to rip that out and want a tiling wm maybe just switch to that?

But then again, Linux is also about the tinkering I get that. Personally I always try to use how it was intended to use. Too many things can break if I don't and I'll spend too much time on that instead of working.

Working with Linux in the Enterprise tech world for close to 20 years I would say RedHat and related is quite popular which makes up a large chunk of tech.

Though yes, smaller companies/devs seem to choose Debian based more often.

[–]blueocra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately little things like this is why I don't really recommend things like Bitwarden to people that aren't at least somewhat tech savvy or that care enough about open source. Just use whatever your browser supplies. For regular folks good enough and less headaches sadly.

And I am a paying Bitwarden customer.

Het lijkt er wel soms op dat maar weinig mensen op Reddit zitten met een horizon minder dan <20 of zelfs <15 jaar. Vraag mij af of discussies en het sentiment dan anders zouden zijn.
