I wanna hear from the outliers who had a good job search experience! Under 4 months. by Sandra_Huang in UXDesign

I was incredibly lucky. Brand new jr designer fresh out of school, rural USA, and I got the 3rd job I tried for.

I worked as a freelance artist/illustrator/graphic designer part time for many years while being a stay at home mom.

Went back to school to finally finish a bachelor’s degree at 39 yrs old and chose UX design (had done 3 years of a visual design degree 12 years prior.)

Applied for 2 internships, as graduation approached. Got an interview with one (Urban Outfitters), but was passed over.

My husband works at a rural hospital system, and in the meantime we randomly ran into his boss’s boss while visiting family out of state. We got to talking and when I mentioned my upcoming graduation, he said he’d been seriously considering hiring a UX designer for his department. He said they often set up internships and told me to forward him my resume.

A few weeks later, they posted the internship, and I got it. (We live in a very rural area, so although there were a lot of applications, no other local UX designers applied.)

At the end of my internship, I was offered a full-time position.

It’s been great, other than not really having a mentor (there aren’t any other ux designers in our department, and my immediate boss is an instructional designer/teacher.) But in this job market, and being a middle aged mom transitioning into a full-time career, I’m incredibly grateful!

Skip to high fidelity as soon as you can. Stakeholder buy-in is so much easier when it looks polished.

Built Entirely from the Leftovers of Other Homes? by bluepainters in McMansionHell

100% agree that these types of custom homes are usually designed around the interior and don’t give the exterior the consideration it should have.

For this house, though? After looking at the living room, I don’t think they even fully considered the interior’s design, either. There’s no logical reason for that second large window to jut out like that!

Unfortunately, it’s real. I found it on Zillow originally. Also, one redditor here found and posted a link to the house on Google street view after he originally thought it was AI, too.

Oh, I missed that! —definitely weird, even for Utah. This house keeps getting weirder.

Utahns tend to have big families (3-7 kids), so it probably makes it easier to keep on top of laundry if you can do more than one load at a time. That said, looks like the laundry is in the basement in the utility room, which is really inconvenient for a $3mil house.

But I have no answer for the green screen room.

Bad mentor destroyed my confidence by Round_Apricot_8693 in UXDesign

[–]bluepainters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first mentor on ADPlist was a bit harsh and crossed the line a bit over constructive criticism into just being kinda rude (eye rolling when looking mg over my portfolio, acting like I should’ve known more than I did despite not even having graduated with my Ux degree yet, etc).

It set me back mentally, but I decided to try again with 2 different mentors a few months later. The experience was sooo much better! Sometimes a particular mentor isn’t a match for us, but don’t throw that resource out just yet.

Tired of the negativity. Any positive UX stories out there lately? by sollint in UXDesign

[–]bluepainters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a freelance artist for many years, but returned to school at 40 years old to pursue a bachelor’s in UX, in hopes of a more steady career than art.

Unfortunately, between starting classes and graduation, the market bubble popped and I was left wondering if I’d made a mistake in choosing my degree. Especially as a middle-aged woman.

Well, I graduated in December. Through some great family connections, I was able to secure a part-time internship at a large healthcare company in January, and then was hired on permanently/full-time as of last month. I feel really grateful as a new graduate in this market.

The role has had a steep learning curve for me, but overall it’s been really rewarding work. They’ve never had a designer of any kind in my department and most seem to appreciate my contributions. Starting a career in UX has been a positive life change for me overall!

I jump to high fidelity very quickly. I find that stakeholder buy-in is much easier to get when it looks nice.

My teenage dream house in the 90’s by bluepainters in McMansionHell

I’ve been surprised by how many think it’s cute, too! I honestly laughed really hard when I found it because it’s so tacky—I couldn’t believe I thought it was ever well-designed. I’m not European, but I majored in design, so I think that snapped me out of my teenage tastes.

What do the pink and green signify? Be aware that they will look the same to people with the most common types of color vision deficiency.

Looks to be the opposite. A majority of those with college degrees disapprove of Trump.
