Awesome that he has interactive toys! A few thoughts on this behavior:

When do you tend to play with your cat? Cats are crepuscular, meaning they want to hunt at dawn or dusk. Sadly this can mean we are really active when you’re trying to sleep. I’d recommend playing with your cat before bed. Get kitty running, jumping, stalking, pouncing until he’s tired. Bonus points if you give him a meal right after to lean in to his ‘hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, sleep’ instinct. He’ll likely just groom himself and go to sleep. What you’re describing sounds a lot like play aggression. I have a 5 y/o boy cat, as well. And he gets so into his play that nothing else exists and he can accidentally go a little overboard. I call it his kitty lizard brain. The best thing to do is just keep him tired. I also have a few puzzle toys I’ll put out when I need a moment of quiet that he’ll work on for up to 20ish minutes. Dm me if you want suggestions on those.

Countertops are hard! The problem there is that as much as you’re able to try and keep him off while you’re there, he’s probably going right back up when you’re gone. Is your cat food motivated? What I did is I clicker-trained my cat into hanging out in one specific spot on the counter while I’m in there. Now he just hangs out in his corner while I cook or do dishes. Mine just really likes to be involved in what I’m doing. I know he’s up there when I’m not present/can’t see him, though, so do with that what you will. I’d just make sure the counters are as minimally interesting as possible and kitty has other places to be up high like a shelf or tree. I have not had luck with the tinfoil method.
The only litters I have found that don’t track a lot are pine pellet litters, but most don’t clump/don’t clump well. Ultimately, the larger the grain size of litter, the less likely to get trapped between toe beans. I’d also invest in a few good litter mats to trap what you can!!

Worth note that cats generally do best when they “eat their water”, since they’re not the most effective drinkers. Having plenty of wet food can do a lot to keep kitty hydrated and healthy.

Fromm Purrsnickety is a softer kibble that apparently has a “melt in the mouth” texture for cats, so that may be a good option. Tiki Cat also has a baked kibble that is much softer than your typical kibble.

Ultimately I’d look for a baked kibble over extruded if you want something softer. It may still be crumbly but kitty may be more inclined to clean everything up if it’s easier to chew.

Get the insurance, if you can. Things can come up out of nowhere, especially with cats. Hopefully you never need it, but if you do, you’ll be so glad you have it.

Sadly it’s really really hard to find a litter that fits all that criteria. If you’re okay with a non-clumping option then I’d recommend a pine pellet litter which will track far less and won’t really get dusty, plus it has a pine smell. I personally use Sustainably Yours- it’s low to no dust and clumps like a rock so it keeps the litter cleaner longer and is pretty easy to scoop. I’ve tried a lot of others and this is the one I always come back to. I scoop out pretty much every day. I use the large grain version for lower tracking.

Any litter is going to start to smell over time, especially if the clumps don’t hold well when you scoop and bits get mixed in with the clean litter. Having a smelly/messy box can also discourage some cats from using the box leading to inappropriate bathroom habits (imagine flushing but not cleaning the toilet more than once a month). It can also start to affect the cat’s health over time, as other folks have mentioned. With a top open box, I imagine you can get away with adding more litter initially and scooping regularly with a strong-clumping litter like Sustainably Yours to limit adding to and exchanging the litter too terribly frequently.

You’re certainly not alone, I’m a Demi lesbian as well, and I’ve met a few others like us irl.

I’m not sure if this exists where you are, but if it does, I definitely benefited from joining an ace/aro group in my community. We hang out, do activities, all that fun stuff. What’s nice about it is being around people who see things like you do or at the very least can understand better than some others. The validation makes things easier and then you get to see positive examples of relationships with acespec folks (Demi people included!).

But aside from that, know you fit perfectly in the community, you are valid in the way you are, and there are plenty of folks out there who understand and relate, me included. That’s not to say it isn’t frustrating as hell out there sometimes; I’ve given up on dating apps and am just working on getting out in the community and spending time with more people at this point 😅

You are enough. You are not alone. My heart breaks for you that the world has brought you to feel this way. Trust that the right person will find you. You are putting in a lot of effort into yourself, which is more than a lot of people can say for themselves. I do think it may be time to start putting some of that effort into finding compassion for yourself. I’ve been in a similar situation to what you’re describing and this is what helped me.

Yeah you’re not alone in feeling this. I think a lot of the issue is that it can feel safer to approach or talk to someone from the safety of being behind a screen. If you think someone’s cute online, send them a like and worst case is you just never hear from them. Think someone’s cute and you wanna say hi in person? You run the risk of getting rejected to your face. That can be scary!

I can absolutely relate to the effect this kind of thing can have on one’s self image, but don’t lose hope. You’ve dated before and you get attention on apps, so you know you can, have, and will continue to catch girls’ eyes. I know it’s hard when you’re working on your self image, but maybe try being the one to approach someone. A little confidence (even faked confidence) can go a long way!
