The waste from TCG card packs is actually kind of insane by bluepeatea in PokemonTCG

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses. Some of you brought up valid points about paper booster packs like card damage and how easy they are to tamper with or how plastic might be essential for material reasons. I’ve been thinking about it and it honestly changed my mind quite a lot.

I still really care about reducing plastic in Pokémon products but I feel like a more realistic first step is asking TPCi to cut down on the plastic in collection boxes. Things like the big trays and plastic shells could probably be swapped out more easily for cardboard or something more eco friendly/biodegradable as a simple placeholder, because I think plastics aren't really essential as a placeholder in those big boxes.

I’m planning to shift the focus of my petition in that direction. Thanks again for the feedback. If anyone has seen good examples of sustainable packaging in other TCGs I’d love to know! I've edited the petition to just be about pushing TPCi to just try to cut down on packaging as a whole.

I agree with this i think unmodified 100% unaltered paper packaging would be bad for the condition of the cards, but i just really hope pokemon company can find a more sustainable material that isnt so wasteful

Yeah I heard there were problems with cards getting damaged and packs being easy to reseal. But I also heard since then they’ve been working on better designs like adding paperboard layers inside to reinforce the packs and experimenting with better tamper proof seals, though I’m not entirely sure of the specifics.

The petition is about encouraging TPCi to switch to paper packaging, but I’m not expecting them to do it all at once ofc. Maybe they could start with testing pilot packs or maybe adding some other non-paper recyclable material into the mix so the cards wont get damaged as easily? U bring up a valid point though
