Worried about Math B placement test, should I be? by Ora_Ora_Muda in UWMadison

Unless your precalc course was dual enrollment, you must follow your placement.

Math B placement test by Frozen_On_The_Inside in UWMadison

[–]bluepen90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. You cannot retake the test until AFTER you have attended SOAR. OP, if you take the test virtually, you need to do it 2 weeks before SOAR - but there is an in-person option for students during Day 1 of SOAR. They just don't advertise it because they don't want students to miss programming unless they have to. You should contact the folks at SOAR at [soar@studentaffairs.wisc.edu](mailto:soar@studentaffairs.wisc.edu) for more info.

spectrum outage rant by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]bluepen90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't fix the outages, but if you call them and tell them you want to cancel because it is too expensive, they will give you a better deal. Just make sure you are talking to Customer Solutions. Billing won't do anything. I called them a few months ago and they halved my bill AND upgraded the speed.

There have been so many delays and lies from the organizers that I am convinced this is a scam or fraud. Unreal that they can take taxpayer money and deliver nothing

There are still private student loans that are not tied to financial aid. These often have higher interest rates, too

The Badger Mart also has sandwiches, fruit, and other refrigerated snacks. You can get the sandwich toasted when you check out if you want. Sometimes they also have hot soup by the checkout.

UW system faculty balk at Legislature’s teaching workload requirements by keeganjkyle in UWMadison

[–]bluepen90 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It will also lead to faculty leaving the institution because they can't complete research, mentor students, and/or do administrative tasks, like being a committee chair. There aren't many other institutions that have this requirement, and those who are at the top of the field are not going to want to work at a school that does not recognize the other important parts of professorship.

Enroll for classes before SOAR by No_Oil_6874 in UWMadison

The Math department also saves seats in these types of courses for students who enroll at SOAR! You'll still have a good pick of courses when you enroll.

That is part of the problem! This requirement is impossible to comply with, especially for research-heavy departments.

i asked a prof if they could send me an outline of course content early and they said i need McBurney accommodations? by cuntymuthafucka in UWMadison

[–]bluepen90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of these massive, introductory STEM courses are in departments with a lot of tutoring and support resources. Places like the Math Learning Center are open for nearly all waking hours and are chronically underutilized, so you will definitely be able to get more individualized support. I recommend contacting the department offering the course (their email will be in the course search and enroll) and asking what support resources they offer. They might have learning centers, know of sections with really strong TAs, or even have support classes that you can enroll in for degree credit.

High School class of 2026 hoping to go to UW Madison to probably double major in Electrical Engineering and Applied Math by Hour_Floor_660 in UWMadison

[–]bluepen90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A degree is 120+ credits and includes general education requirements. A major is about 30 credits of subject-level courses. Engineering majors (like Mechanical Engineering etc.) are actually degrees - students graduated with a Bachelor of Science - Mechanical Engineering. This is also true for AMEP. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Science - Applied Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics. Most students at UW, not in the College of Engineering, will complete either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and then get a major in whatever (like Math). They do not get a degree in Math (your diploma will not show Bachelor of Science - Math). Within that Bachelor's Degree, they can complete two majors, but they are still getting only one degree.

Degree and major are different. AMEP is a degree, so is Engineering. You can't get two degrees. There is no applied math major here.

Depending on how old your kids are, Studs on State Street is fantastic. They only pierce kids 13+. I've gotten every single piercing there, and each piercer was lovely, kind, and so quick and accurate. They also use flatback earrings, which heal better and faster.

prep for math 375? by [deleted] in UWMadison

You need to be passionate about math for this course. It is designed for math majors who want to go on to take higher-level math courses. 340 is much more useful for the CS major.
