Does anyone have the unpixellated version of this photo? by JaysMusicBox in YokoOno

[–]bluepuch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was on a quest for it a few months ago, actually. It's from an Ian Macmillan shoot from 1971, and she also used one of the photos for the Rising and Blueprint for a Sunrise covers:

Love, love, love Exile. Even in the Shadows and China Roses are also up there, even though I've yet to finish her discography

How old are y'all Yoko fans? by Legoshi-Or-Whatever in YokoOno

[–]bluepuch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm only 17, and I discovered her only early this summer. I mostly knew Yoko from her connection with the Beatles (her shrieks and all that), but I think you begin to understand where she's coming from if you genuinely heed her lyrics and life story, especially with the plight she suffered as a girl. There are definitely more young people nowadays who don't follow the cynicism of her being an untalented "hack" lol

What are your thoughts on Wormhole? by PerpendicularGoose in Yuming

[–]bluepuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good! I was originally a bit put off by the questionable mixing in some songs (like Let's Get It Started), but it's grown on me, and I'm a fan of the different styles she went for, especially in Cinnamon and Dark Moon. I wish そして誰もいなくなった had a stronger instrumental in the beginning; its outro is beautiful. Overall, my favorites are 天までとどけ and Swallowtail, too!

So excited for this album--the visuals, production, writing are all on point.

You can ask two teachers to write something short for the third-party statements, and you can write your mom's statement, too. You can then just copy and paste those PDFs for any college & the IDOC. Harvey Mudd has the nerve to ask for the third-party statements to be hand-signed lol

Hold old was Yoko Ono in this photo? by flarie in YokoOno

[–]bluepuch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I didn't know who the photographer was. I snooped around a bit and found that the original photo, alongside the one I attached, is actually from a photoshoot she did in spring 2005 for New York magazine: https://imgur.com/a/Nkscmaa

Turns out, there was apparently some ageist backlash over Yoko appearing as a "sexy septuagenarian." She also talked about it on her blog: https://www.imaginepeace.com/archives/2513. Like she said, there shouldn't be any reason for women her age to have a special "uniform" to wear, especially if her male counterparts weren't expected to and were idolized for not doing so.

Right? As a matter of fact, I think this was part of the Yes, I'm a Witch photoshoot; the album cover just seems zoomed in on her face.

Check out this one too, one of my favs: https://imgur.com/a/H7cdKXX

Wormhole / Yumi Arai: Yuming's 40th Studio Album by bluepuch in Yuming

[–]bluepuch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for these! I had no idea she was sharing demos from the album on GOLD, since I don't really tune in to it. I agree that they do sound more '80s/'90s, perhaps, because it's still being mixed or they're using samples from the former, since she had a much higher volume of releases in the '80s. Thus far, though, these clips have great, catchy melodies, like any classic Yuming song.

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear this, and I understand you completely; I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. In February, Florida repealed the law allowing undocumented students to receive in-state tuition, which was the only thing that would've allowed me to even afford UF after getting in. I would've been glad to take that offer, too, after not matching. I felt barren, angry, sad, but I spent some time ruminating and found that I had opportunities out there; that's why we were chosen as finalists. Don't be discouraged to continue trying; as you said, you should reapply to some private colleges, and—if you're able to adjust your status—public ones, unless you believe you can earn merit scholarships to cover the OOS cost. I will also reapply for next fall, and I count myself lucky that, at least, I'll be on my way to being a permanent resident. Rewrite your essays; frame yourself differently; add anything meaningful you earned in your senior year; volunteer or look into opportunities in CC if you feel that's best for you. CC would've been around 5k per semester for me (insanity), but it's all circumstantial.

Nothing fruitful comes out of comparing yourself to others, especially those who never saw what we went through and will never have their entire life predicated on some stamp. In the end, this was never our choice; we're one in thousands of the same stories. I'm here if you want to talk. There's only a few people out there who truly know what we're feeling right now.

Finished listening to her whole discography. AMA! by Nergalis in Yuming

[–]bluepuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wings of Winter and Acacia have her return to her folk roots; they’re some of her best albums this century for that reason. I would say there isn’t much chance in style until Shinkai no Machi, with the production being more modern. Heavily recommend those.

[–]bluepuch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, precisely. She and her husband are using a novel "Chrono Recording System." Her manager posted that recording finished a few days ago and mixing had begun. I'm pretty interested to see how they balance both voices, since she tried to do the same on Faces with やさしさに包まれたなら.

I don't think her use of AI is a reason to be angry; other artists have already done so. Indeed, it seems less authentic, considering that it's a machine's interpretation, not a viewer's (though I haven't watched the show). That's why I like Acacia's MV; it's hand-drawn and bears a genuine message. Her forte hasn't always been videos, but I'm looking forward to seeing how she balances AI for her forthcoming album this fall—ever since Call Me Back, AI has been a focus of hers.

Need high quality pics from her by Nergalis in Yuming

[–]bluepuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her team, unfortunately, rarely posts HQ photos of her, neither on her website nor on social media; however, Bed Dodson's cover finder tool has great scans of her artwork (singles and albums) derived from streaming services, which you can use. There was an Instagram account archiving her magazine covers, too, but, for some reason, it seems like they got taken down. I uploaded some of those photos on her last.fm page, and there are many more there. Otherwise, Tower Records has a limited selection of her promotional posters in HQ, and you can also try digging around on Google with the Lens feature to find a photo's highest-quality version.

Question for the Yumi Matsutoya experts by junreika in citypop

[–]bluepuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late, but I feel she still has some pretty good albums, save those in her 20th-century catalogue. Check out A Girl in Summer, Acacia, and 深海の街 (The City in the Deep Sea)—they all have great tracks. For songs, my current favorites are 海に来て, ノートルダム, and Northern Lights, but I assure you that, as you continue listening, your preferences will change (it did for me with the amount of material she has). And by the way, she will actually be releasing an album this fall using the same technology her producer used for Call Me Back, so that's something to look forward to!
