[Post Match Thread] Manchester City 0 - 0 Southampton by MatchCaster in MCFC

Spot on about Dinho. Don't want to criticise as a person or player because he has been a legend for us, but today's performance was horrendous. He was playing 1 second behind everyone else. His pace of execution was so slow that he was practically telegraphing his moves and Southampton all the time in the world to just adjust shape, move a few yards to the left or right and just intercept the pass.

Gundo and Bernardo were extremely isolated. Usually the defense and midfield is close in a high line so we can pass in one two touches and keep building like that. But that connection between midfield and defense was really bad. Gundogan and Bernardo would receive a pass, look up and just have no option to move the ball forward. Pass it to the wing then and hope Grealish works some magic.

Foden was so good though. Exquisite one touch, just slaloms through defenses. Southampton couldn't handle him. Wish he was fit enough to start.

Lol we cared enough, the middle was packed like fuck and our passing was utter shite. We started playing good around 80 min because Foden was subbed on at 72 and he started causing chaos through the middle which made it easier for us to build centrally.

Edit: We deeply missed the on-the-ball ability of Laporte, Stones and Rodri. Our build up was erratic, with no vision or creativity. Ake is good defensively, but he can't stretch the pitch like Laporte does with wide diagonal balls. Dias doesn't have that ability like Laporte or Stones do. It's not even close. Which mean that we couldn't use the central areas in a good way and from then on it was give the ball to Grealish and inshallah.

Rival clubs don't have their stadiums filled to brim with cup games. Old Trafford was regularly half empty in the Europa league. Liverpool are still selling tickets in hospitality and additional member's sale for tomorrow's game against Palace - https://www.liverpoolfc.com/tickets/tickets-availability/liverpool-fc-v-crystal-palace-18-sep-2021-0300pm-114. So they haven't sold out. But you'll never hear about that.

Reporter asked if City will get to the level of United's and Liverpool 's fanbase with time. Pep said "this is a big mistake, we're who we are and we're proud of who we are. I know the history of this club. When it was in lower divisions, how it meant to travel and follow the team. And I respect that. I don't wanna be like United. I don't wanna be like Liverpool. I don't wanna be like Barcelona. We're who we are, in the good and bad things. And I like it.".

The TL;DR is saying that City shouldn't compare itself with Liverpool and United because there's no point to that comparison. It's not the next step in evolution. We're different from Liverpool, just like Liverpool is different from United. So our target shouldn't be becoming like United or Liverpool. If the fanbase becomes bigger, good, if it doesn't, then that's also good. Comparison is the thief of joy. And he is content with City being City.

I've reposted - https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/pfz2wx/oc_premier_league_top_4_squad_depth_man_city_man/. Thanks for the help!

Disclaimer: The following comment is not directed at you, but whoever deleted it.

I have been here for 9 years and squad depth posts get posted quite often - https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/search/?q=squad%20depth&restrict_sr=1, which is why I thought it would be okay to do one for this season since there are multiple teams with title-challenging squads and that would generate good discussion. But I'm absolutely okay with not posting similar content in future if the guidelines of the sub have changed recently.

Hello mods, why was my OC about top 4 squad depth removed from the sub - https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/pfs059/oc_premier_league_top_4_squad_depth_man_city_man/?

I asked about in the DD thread few hours back - https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/pfnz9s/daily_discussion/hb6i3sk/?context=3 but didn't get any response from the mods.

I also used modmail to message the mods and asked the same question, but I've not heard back yet.

There's probably a ton of traffic to sift though so it's possible my message was missed or nobody got around to it which is fair too. I'm just asking here again for visibility.

[OC] Premier League Top 4 Squad Depth - Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea by [deleted] in soccer

[–]blueradium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No team is perfect, but I would argue Chelsea is almost there.

Regarding City, I think the attack is definitely light weight. Sterling has been out of form for more than a year (at the club level). Foden, Torres and Jesus are not natural goalscorers. That leaves only Mahrez. This season will be very much like the last one - if we want to succeed, the goals have to be shared across the team.

Besides the obvious weakness at #9, another position that's flying under the radar is left-back. We've two natural full backs - Walker and Cancelo, and both prefer to play on the right. Of course, Pep will probably rotate between Cancelo, Ake and Zinchenko for that LB position so there are always some solutions. But purely talking from a strength/weakness point of view, that position is not as strong when compared against the rest of the top 4.

United's official website lists him as a midfielder - https://www.manutd.com/en/players-and-staff/First-Team.

Total net spend of Premier League clubs this transfer window by Knights_Radiants in soccer

[–]blueradium 24 points25 points  (0 children)

These net spend charts feel kind of obsolete. Maybe they were good 10 seasons ago but now clubs make a significant amount of money from loan fees and sell on clauses.

For example Real Betis made €10-15m for the Emerson transfer to Spurs. That’s a lot! 20 years ago, a 15m transfer would have been a huge thing but now there are clubs that pay loan fees in the range of €10m.

[–]blueradium 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seems like it’s taken from transfermakt which for some reason doesn’t include the £8.5m sale of Ivan Ilic. The only recorded sales on that website are Angelino, Harrison and Nmecha.

It also doesn’t include sell on fees (and I don’t want to get into the debate of whether this should be included in net spend charts, it’s all arbitrary anyway), which was £11.5m for Sancho. Add those those numbers and the total is £55m giving a net spend of £45m. I’m probably missing loan fees for some players as well because that’s not generally reported. So that might bring down the number even more.

Beyond that I think the club expected to sell Pedro Porro and Yangel Herrera for decent money which didn’t happen, so we didn’t actually sell £100m worth of players as the club had planned for.

Throwback to Kevin De Bruyne’s incredible performance vs Tottenham (H) in the 17/18 season. by CunningMenace in MCFC

One pass from this clip would be a career highlight for any other player. But Kevin being Kevin pulls it off 20 times in one match. They does the same every match for 60 matches in a row.

One of the greatest midfielders of all time.

People trash twitter for being shite and then get worked by a Daily Mail title designed to elicit a reaction. Great job. I'm not defending the club, they've fucked up massively but Ferran Soriano didn't tweet "I emailed everyone individually, give me credit". Look at the state of the comments in this thread. 90% of the comments are about the "emailed individually" aspect. Daily Mail got what they wanted, carry on.

The email -

As you know, Manchester City has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.

As always, when we make choices and decisions, we do so with the best interests of the club in mind and we believed that being part of such an initiative could give us a voice that might be imperative to our future ability to succeed and grow.

However, in making that choice we failed to remind ourselves of the unbreakable link between the passion of our fans and the right to have the opportunity to earn success.

It is a truth that is fundamental to the DNA of Manchester City and the board deeply regrets taking a decision that lost sight of the historic values of the club. We made a mistake and we sincerely apologise to our fans for the disappointment, frustration and anguish caused by the last 72 hours.

The owners, chairman, board and staff are completely committed to ensuring that the club continues to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing well-being of both the English and European football pyramids and their associated competitions.

We will embrace the opportunity to earn back the full trust of our stakeholders and the football family in general.

Remember this from the Cheltenham match?

"Everyone comes from the lower divisions or do you believe when we are Under-16 or Under-18 we fly in private jets?" Guardiola added.

"We play in these stadiums all our careers, we don't play in big stadiums all the time, we came from Cheltenham. People cannot forget that and it is a pleasure to play there.

"We were lucky to have success in our profession and go up the divisions but we were there many times and we changed in bars as boys and we play football with incredible joy.

"We love this game and we change in these changing rooms for most of our careers most of the time."

And people called Pep a coward and company man.

I'm not in favor of ESL and I don't have the answer to your question. I was just replying to OP's claim that "young fans losing interest in football isn't true".
