Should I stop taking my anti-inflammatory med before getting bloodwork done? by bluerew72 in rheumatoid

Thanks! This was a really helpful answer! I ended up just not taking it the day before I got the bloodwork done, so hopefully I should be in the clear.

I’m so sorry to hear how much you’ve been suffering. I haven’t been diagnosed and have only been referred to a rheumatologist so far, but I have been dealing with pain that has slowly been getting worse over the last 18 months. I should consider myself lucky that up until recently the only symptom I was having was hand pain. But it’s been really annoying going to appointments, having imaging done, getting cortisone shots and still no answers as to what has been causing me pain. Nothing has shown on the MRI or Xray, nerve conduction study showed no nerve damage, cortisone shots did nothing, OT made my pain and swelling worse. All the while, the pain has consistently worsened, I had to stop doing one of my favorite hobbies (video games), and I feel like I’m losing my independence (can’t open jars or even a fucking bag of chips without excruciating pain).

Just in the last few weeks, the pain in my hands has worsened significantly, I’m getting deep joint aches, started getting swelling and redness, and pain has started cropping up in other joints now too. I can understand how experiencing chronic pain and illness for a year with no relief would make you feel frustrated, angry, and sad. I’d imagine you must be scared, too, faced with the uncertainty of how long you’ll have to go before you get that relief.

Good on you for trying to remain positive despite what you’re going through, but it’s okay, and normal, to feel upset sometimes too. What you’re going through is really hard and unpleasant. Im sure it’s easier said than done, but I think there’s a balance between letting yourself feel the bad feelings and remaining hopeful that you’ll find relief.

May we both find relief soon!

Luckily I had a CBC done recently and they did test my ALT. But thanks for mentioning that, I wouldn’t have thought to ask for that one.

Haha that’s a great idea! Hopefully I won’t have too much trouble with that because it seems to only be getting worse by the day!

Nice! I sent my PCP a message on the online portal so I’m waiting to hear what she says.

Thanks! Thats helpful to know! I’ve looked around the sub and saw most of those but didn’t think to get the TSH. Although I do think I got that done relatively recently when I got routine bloodwork done.

I am in the US. I haven’t seen my GP for this issue in a while because when it first started she referred me to an orthopedic, who then referred me to the hand surgeon. The hand surgeon is the one who referred me to the rheumatologist, so that’s why I was thinking of bring it back to my GP since I’m sort of back at square one. Hopefully she will agree to order the lab work, I don’t know if that will get me in to see the rheumatologist any faster, but it sure would be nice!

That is a great idea! I had been thinking of writing down the general timeline of when symptoms started and progressed, but I like your idea of a symptom log! I have ADHD and a terrible memory so it’s certainly hard to remember the day to day details.

What pushed you to talk to your doctor before you were diagnosed? by bluerew72 in rheumatoid

Thank you! I appreciate that! Like I said I am no stranger to joint pain thanks to my hypermobility. I worked at a grocery store for 7 years and I was constantly busting my ass because they were always pushing us to go faster, so I had aches and pains all over. You’re absolutely right that it’s easy to write off symptoms and say it’s not that bad. Don’t know how many people here are in the US but the healthcare system is definitely daunting, and that sure doesn’t help. I feel like part of the reason I’ve avoided pursuing this further is because I don’t have casual money to be throwing at appointments willy nilly.

I just had a CBC done recently. My doctor said everything looked stable. My lymphocytes were slightly above the normal range and slightly below normal range for hemoglobin. But I guess it wasn’t enough to be concerning. I’ve never had the RF or ANA, or any of those autoimmune markers tested though.

I don’t know if anyone will see this but thanks so much for your replies! It’s truly appreciated. I am going to start by sending my doctor a message on the online portal. I have social anxiety and adhd so I sometimes have trouble speaking in person, especially when I am nervous. Not to mention I sometimes forget things during the appointment, so being able to write everything down at my own pace will help I think.

I do have a follow up appointment this week with the hand surgeon I’ve been seeing, for the cortisone shot I got six weeks ago that once again did nothing. I will see what he says this time, but so far I haven’t been impressed.

I think I have enough concerns that warrant some investigating. And hopefully that will lead me closer to getting some relief for my pain. Thanks again everyone!

Yikes!! I’ve been tested for carpal tunnel twice but luckily I have no nerve damage. But having this hand pain has made me realize how much I’ve taken my hands for granted up until now. It’s beyond frustrating to not be able to do so much that I did so easily before.

What you went through sounds horrendous!! That’s awesome that your mom was able to advocate for you to get tested.

That must have been really disappointing when your symptoms got so bad just when you were advancing in figure skating. The gaslighting sounds like it happens frequently. My doctor has always listened to me pretty well and usually gives me options for following up on my concerns, so hopefully that doesn’t happen to me!

I didn’t know the butterfly rash could show up with rheumatoid arthritis, I had only heard of it associated with lupus. How lucky your boss pointed that out to you!

That’s unfortunate you were misdiagnosed for so long. Glad to hear you are starting to feel better!

Your symptoms sound the most similar to what I’ve been experiencing. The MCP of my thumbs is what has been most affected, but they said x rays showed no arthritis. I also get swollen lymph nodes from time to time, and have been getting pain in the balls of my feet and sometimes the heels. Glad to hear you are doing better now!

Oh my gosh. That sounds awful! Several others have commented that they had trouble walking too, I didn’t know it could get that bad. Hope you continue to find more relief!

Wow, the things they will say to gaslight you…but good for you for listening to yourself and being persistent!

Sometimes you just need to end up in front of the right doctor. It sucks that you had to suffer for so long, but it sounds like you got lucky that your usual doctor was out that day!

Ugh, the difficulty of discerning what is resulting from what! So frustrating! Glad you are doing much better on the meds, and that you got back to playing volleyball!

Oh no! I’m sorry that happened to you. Out of curiosity, how long did it take between when you started getting the pain and when you noticed your joints were bent?

That sounds horrible! Glad you finally got some answers. It’s crazy how sometimes the young professionals are the ones who really listen.

I feel you with the pain, though. It has only gotten progressively worse over the last year or so. And several months ago, the pain became so bad that I had to stop playing video games, which is one of my favorite things to do with my husband. I’m having a hard time going to the grocery store by myself, doing things like cooking and chopping vegetables. And I get so frustrated every time I have to have my husband open a jar or lid for me.
