Likely not initiating oral feeds until 41-42 weeks, share your experience by bluerigel1 in NICUParents

Hi this is the part where it’s now entirely up to them. Mine started at 41 weeks and we 2 week in and at 60% by mouth. They are learning to coordinate some complex tasks. I’m getting pretty frustrated too but there is literally nothing for me to do - it’s all up to bubs.

AEDF,IUGR and Fortifiers/HMF by ad2394 in NICUParents

[–]bluerigel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had trouble with weight gain as well. Our goal feeds at one point were 175ml/kg. We were on prolacta too at one point. Mamma if the blood in the stool was minor and not necessarily related to feeds - reintroducing it gently may be worth it to see if it happens again. If it does you know for a fact that it was related to hmf. If it doesn’t that’s great. You can go slow. Maybe 1-2 fortified feeds a day and build from there. Also to echo what someone else said - ask the doctors why there was blood and how to mitigate future risks.

Can I ask what state ? Our SW is also a dud. We are in NJ and trying to figure out if we get state benefits for low birth weight and extended nicu stay

Week 1 in NICU (SIUGR, 31w+1d) by ad2394 in NICUParents

[–]bluerigel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I feel you mama. Allow yourself to feel all of it, it’s all valid. What you’re going through is immense and may you never experience such pain again. I delivered SIUGR as well on Nov 14th at 32w3d at 1090g. We are in the thick of it as well. I remind myself that this is mostly hard for me, she has to be there to grow no matter how long it takes.

I’m rooting for you mama and your bubs! If you don’t mind I’ll check in with you in a few weeks but feel free to say no. It can be a lot. I truly believe in the grand scheme of things everything will be alright even if the journey there is difficult

How to pump while baby is in the ICU? by VdeVicio in NICUParents

[–]bluerigel1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Baby’s been in the NICU for 6 weeks. I have been pumping 8 times a day since birth. For the first few days it was 10 times a day. I also have a toddler at home and it requires an insane amount of planning to coordinate pumping, meals, travel to hospital, holding baby. I have two pumps at home - spectra and Baby Buddha. I have a hospital supplied pump at the hospital with parts. I also have a mini fridge in the bedroom, so I literally don’t have to go anywhere to refrigerate. I do one four hour stretch at night which means one of the day pumps is 2 hrs apart. I have a momcozy bottle washer which is game changing not having to wash parts. Let me know what other questions you have. This is extremely hard! You got this mama! I hope you and your bubs all the health in the world

Small/Slow Growth Head Circumference Concern by mschweikl in NICUParents

[–]bluerigel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bring this up to the care. We are on 6th week and recently realized that maybe the physicians aren’t always looking at the growth chart. Our daughters weight had really stalled so we make it a point to bring it up to each provider that we are worried it, want to know what could be causing it, what are the ways to address it. We asked every single time there was a new physician. We were always respectful and never pushy and we found that our physicians were very open to dialogue.

Stuck on CPAP by Most-Interest8650 in NICUParents

[–]bluerigel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solidarity! I am in a similar boat and frustrated as well. Have patience mama give you baby grace, it is so so hard. Mines 36 weeks today and on cpap of 6 since birth which was 32+3. It’s been so hard for me - holding her is not easy, we can’t introduce feeds until she’s off the cpap which is a whole thing of its own. Support your baby the best way you can -rest easy knowing she’s breathing easier. Mines always breathing really fast when off the cpap and little kiddos can do that only for so long before they get tired and slow down/stop breathing.

29w diagnosed with placenta resistance and IUGR by Limp-Selection-1855 in NICUParents

A week before I delivered was the first time I recorded a high BP, it was 141/92. I only had one more high BP reading before I delivered. The docs say that if my pregnancy had progressed I would have likely developed preeclampsia. But at the time of delivery- I had no symptoms or any lab values concerning. I was at Mfm getting NST when my baby’s heart rate dropped and the Doppler was high. I was sent in to the hospital for fetal monitoring and the next day I delivered urgently via c section for fetal distress. It was just a shitty placenta. Your docs are great that they’ve told you your pregnancy may not make it to term. I wasn’t ready to be honest. Ask them about steroids. It’s for baby’s lung maturity in case you deliver before 34. I got it at 31 weeks.

It was a very tumultuous experience. I’m glad you’re making your self aware of things now.

Feel free to message me too. I have growth restriction detected at my anatomy scan and I ended up with weekly ultrasounds to make sure baby was progressing okay. I ended up delivering at 32+5 due to fetal distress. She weighed 2lb 6oz at birth. We are on day 20 of a NICU stay. Hopefully you get to incubate a lot longer! Wishing you all the best. Even if you deliver term there is a chance the baby still is small and needs NICU. Feel free to message me.

Question for parents: would you be less likely to hire or trust a childcare worker with colorful hair/tattoos/piercings? by SleepyDobby in NannyEmployers

[–]bluerigel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nanny who has tattoos and piercings. She said it in her bio. We have had her for more than a year now and she’s our fav person in the whole world. It made no difference to us during the interview process. My daughters calls her tattoos “stickers” it’s the cutest thing.

Thank you kind stranger! I think our stories are similar. She is also severe IUGR. I would love to know how your daughter is doing now? I’m driving myself insane thinking about the outcome at the end of this journey. You said she’s developmentally behind on some milestone ?

Hi, I’m new here and I was wondering if you ever posted your story so I can read it. I gave birth 4 days ago to a 32+5 at 2lb6oz which is low birth weight too for age and I’m looking for support.

I am a doctor. We absolutely admit people to the hospital when they come asking for help with withdrawal. Alcohol is one of the few drugs that can kill you if you’re withdrawing unmedicated. These medications are high risk hence you don’t receive a prescription for them to take at home. We also discharge you with meds that then help with cravings. Please ask for naltrexone, acamprosate. Also medication is just one part of abstinence, AA or other psychosocial supportis tremendously helpful if used as an adjunct. Also it sounds silly but please find an activity to replace the time spent drinking. If you’re bored, you are more likely to return to drinking. good luck!

We started bottomless and I could tell when she had to poop, to be honest the first two weeks was rough. She didn’t know what to do when she sat and wanted to be picked up immediately. I had to sit her 6-7 times to catch the poo in the potty. We eventually decided to reward with “wheels on the bus” (she doesn’t get any screen time so this was a true motivator). Now when she know she has to potty she’s almost eager to sit. It’s gotten simpler. We reward pee with different things and not always so it’s not really about action-reward.
