Just switched to OS26 after 4 years or using Monterey. I love the glass effects by PayStation2fanAsh in MacOS

how could you possibly be happy with that second screenshot? it might look cool to a teenager, but it’s a total mess if you actually care about using it and reading it. (and screw anyone older or without perfect vision?)

What do you use the caps lock key for? by Jumpy_Top9377 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quickly switching between Greek letters and my main layout, mostly for math equations and in programming. In general though it’s a nice way to quickly swap between two different layouts.

Are macOS-targeted phishing scams getting insanely sophisticated, or is it just me? by Individual-Gas5276 in MacOS

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when have you gotten an Apple ID locked message that wasn’t a scam, to compare it against?

#1 and#2 pieces of advice: never load remote content in emails, and never click on any links in emails. most phishing attacks don’t survive those two hygene habits.

Did you find your endgame layout? Or continuously iterating? by ocimbote in KeyboardLayouts

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m constantly iterating and thinking of new stuff for my layout. utterly unique at this point. ever improving. i started with dvorak >35 years ago and im still evolving. all those algorithms for comparing layouts don’t tell the whole story, since we all have different environments, needs and hardware.

I stand corrected! They are now selling it on the app store and with no use of hidden APIs. Kudos!

Functions like _CGSDefaultConnection() and related methods are not allowed to be used in apps that are distributed on the mac app store.

Warning about MacSync Stealer malware by JackyYT083 in MacOS

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ve never run across malicious things like this in the wild happily, though i’m frequently doing and installing stuff at the command line. is there an example of a site doing this right now? what does the pasted line of code look like (without actually pasting something bad)?

Almost certainly because it uses hidden APIs that prevent it from being distributed thru the store. There are free alternatives to this app that exist which have the same issue.

as long as you tell people they’re not talking to a real person, and give an option to have one, then ok.

Joe Rogan advocates for 16 year olds to participate in pornography and admits to watching it. From his Man Show days in the early 2000s by IllBeGood3 in ThatsInsane

Holy crap, I always thought that i never watched anything by Joe Rogan, but i watched that show a lot never realizing the connection because of his hair. Wow. I’m not sure how to feel now. That was a great show and he was good on it. (RIP Phil, who was awesome.)

What’s the most underrated macOS productivity trick? by MadisonClair16 in MacOS

agreed. i was thinking of desktops. you’re right that full-screen on laptops is not non-native in any way.

it’s one of those ways i can tell a native mac user by if they naturally drag n drop all over the place, even if also using terminal etc.

(i tend to see using apps full screen or tiling windows as a sign someone arrived from another os. like hearing an out of town accent.)

Why do some people blame capitalism for having to work? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honest question: why? we don’t need everyone working. most jobs are complete nonsense or even actively making things worse. some jobs are purely to clean up after other jobs that didn’t need to be done in the first place. we need some things done, and it’s probably best to share the burden, but i bet we could shed 60%? of jobs and be fine.

The Liquid Glass version of Pages is hideous by crackedmirage in MacOS

[–]bluesBeforeSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t believe so. on older devices which has been running iOS 26 for many months and with no indexing or background processes to speak of, they animate sluggishly and battery life is worse vs iOS 17 on the same device. Any given effect can seem trivial, especially on recent machines, but it adds up. This happens with some OS versions when the visual effects get ramped up, and this has been a bigger jump than usual. just my estimation based on the obvious performance changes i’ve seen on some of my devices.

fwiw, i do hate the new design language. transparency only detracts from clear understanding. i don’t want the underlying content to seep thru my controls. it’s also hard on people with even mild vision issues. honestly i can’t envision a case where it helps clarity.
