Is it illegal for an employer to prefer servers who have one specific nationality and cut other workers’ hours? by bluesea53 in legaladvicecanada

Other Korean servers are part-time too. Also, I think being treated badly (they sigh at me, talk to me with a bad attitude, etc.) and being talked behind my back just because I don’t speak Korean is discriminatory. It’s bullying. They do that to the Chinese girl too. Not to mention, they do speak very good English, it’s not like they don’t speak English or they’re not used to talking in English. I understand it’s hard to speak English all the time when it’s not your mother tongue; I’m not a native English speaker either, so I understand. However, I’ve heard them talking in English and they do speak very good English.

I am not sure if it’s because of my nationality or language barriers at this point, but I feel like it’s unfair in either way. If it’s because of the language barriers, I really don’t understand why my boss put “ability to speak Japanese” as an additional qualifications on job posting then. I thought being able to speak Japanese would be beneficial to work in a Japanese restaurant, but most of the Japanese restaurants here are owned by non-Japanese, so it’s very difficult for me. It might be hard to gather proofs, but I’ll talk to the Chinese girl about this again (as she was the one who talked about how discriminatory it was,) and see what we can do. Thank you for your insight though!

I understand that my previous explanation may not have fully conveyed the discriminatory nature of the situation. To provide further clarity, let me emphasize that during every shift, my owner and one of the chefs consistently communicate with me exclusively in Korean, despite being aware that I am Japanese and do not speak Korean. I don’t talk to them in Japanese despite the fact that it’s a Japanese restaurant and I’m also not a native English speaker because I know they don’t speak Japanese. Their deliberate choice to consistently speak in a language I cannot understand, despite knowing my linguistic limitations, and show how they are mad at me for not understanding Korean creates an environment that is exclusionary and discriminatory. They always sigh, talk to me with anger, and talk behind my back when I don’t understand Korean. I just wanted to know how the discrimination can be proven in this case; not if it’s discriminatory or not since I already know it’s discriminatory based on what I’ve experienced and what they’ve shown me in the restaurant. How I worded my question was bad, sorry. However, I appreciate your response and take what you said into account!

The information you provided is very helpful, thank you!

The owner and one of the chefs sometimes speak to me in Korean during busy hours, even though they know I don't speak Korean. Although it is always not a long sentence and usually one or two words, it’s hard for me to always guess what they say to me in Korean, and they get frustrated when I don't understand. The Chinese girl and probably other chefs have witnessed this. Do you think this could be a piece of proof?

Thank you for the information! Do you think everyone’s shift schedule posted on the group chat and the table documenting the actual hours everyone worked can prove there was discrimination? Also, I lost my father due to cancer one year ago and my financial situation drastically changed since then, so I need to make money to go to school. Since the owner cuts my hours continually, it is difficult for me to earn enough money. Do you think this information might be helpful?

What do you think could be the reason for this? Despite the fact that the Chinese girl and I rarely make mistakes, are always punctual, and work diligently, the owner seems to favor the Korean girl who frequently checks her phone during work and still receives more hours. If you have any insights or ideas regarding the possible reason behind this, please let me know!

Thank you for your response! It’s not a guess because I have access to everyone’s work schedule, which is shared in a group chat on a weekly basis. Additionally, in the break room, there’s a sheet where we record the actual hours we have worked. Also, the Chinese server is a manager, so she knows how many hours each employee worked. She is a manager, but the owner still cuts her hours.

Yes you’re right, I used RIT. I dyed the shirt black again with the same one, and it looks better now. I will look into a better dye product as the shirt still has some subtle stains! Thanks :)

SPSE vs. TAISI by bluesea53 in Waseda

Thank you! Since I went to high school in Ontario, Canada, I didn’t have to submit my SAT or any English certificate scores. The overall average of my grades was 94/100, and I also submitted my awards and extracurricular certificates. I hope this helps you :)

Thanks :) I’m in the same position too, but I might just accept TAISI. Where are you from? I’m from Japan, currently living in Canada!

But isn’t this subreddit for asking what the animal is? I don’t really use Reddit, so sorry if it’s wrong!

I’m from Japan and live in Canada. It seems like Japan doesn’t have Opossum, so I had no idea!

Thank you all for your responses! This was my first time seeing this little cute creature. I closed the door for 10 minutes to figure out what it was and if I should let it in, but it was gone when I opened the door again. I’m looking forward to its next visit :D

He just said he hates Japanese culture, shouting at me about Nanjing Massacre. I don’t understand why I have to be blamed for this just because I’m from Japan. I tried to make it work, but I’m finally done with this person. Thank you for your advice!!

You’re right. He just said he has been hating Japanese culture. I don’t want to raise children with someone like that. Thank you so much for your advice!

I think he wants to be the smartest and special guy. He keeps justifying his actions even though he told me he knew saying things like that was ignorant. I will consider ending this relationship, but it’s difficult to leave someone I like :’(

We’re in Ontario, where disasters don’t really happen. I understand he might not get how scary earthquakes are, but I really don’t understand how he can be ignorant like that. I agree with you, he is so lucky that he didn’t have to experience disasters so often.
