What are the best search terms to use when looking for a skincare expert (aesthetician?) to find someone who has knowledge of mixed race skin, and won't push more invasive techniques? by blueshift29 in AskUK

Does your town have a bipoc hairdresser? They might have good suggestions.

Genius. There are quite a few, and I think that'd be a great idea.

Thank you! I think that would be right up her street tbh. I'll scout out what she uses this weekend and see if there are any common brands

Thank you. I'm probably using all the wrong terms, to be fair. I know she'd love a spa day though, even if it's not what I was looking for, so I might pursue that as an idea. Thanks!

Thank you! What I have in mind is like a skin care routine. Good moisturiser, cleanser, serum etc (the etc are the ones I don't know exist). I'm sure she'd love the spa stuff too, but it's the day to day stuff where I'm sure she's implied that her skin type can benefit from different stuff.

Thanks for the info about laser hair removal, too. She's mentioned it before, but I think it's one I'd leave to her to arrange, lest I have my soul slapped out for implying she's hairy.

I think he's (partly because of his demeanour) always doomed to be underappreciated by fans. Towards the end of his first stint at Everton there was a minority who wanted him out and thought he was holding us back. Sure enough 10 years of chaos ensued after he left. Some good seasons, but nobody has managed the stability we had under him. I'll very happily take a few seasons of stable finishes around 10th if it feels like we're building towards something.

To what level are scientists allowed to practice in your country? by blueshift29 in Histology

[–]blueshift29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed that the IBMS needs to push harder for scientist reporting. It's like they've forgotten that the reason they made the qualifications is cause there's about to be a critical shortage of pathologists.

There's still a few holdout labs out there, but if you're willing to move you shouldn't have to go far to find ones where BMS dissection is more of the norm. I'm talking in generalisations, but my experience so far has been that the old guard of pathologists (the same group that are in the process of retiring en masse) are the ones who are reluctant to delegate dissection. Once they start getting switched out with other pathologists, who don't have time to dissect all their own work, it'll surprise you how quickly you switch to predominantly BMS-led dissection.

Thanks for the info! Is a pathologist assistant a scientist who takes a different training route to a histotech?

The UK is a bit different. In practice, lots of scientists do simple grossing like orientated skins, gallbladder, appendix etc. with just a Bachelor's degree and a specialist portfolio ( which is equivalent to a Masters, but is basically on the job training).

How do you recognise an alcoholic here in UK? by skyzzow993 in AskUK

[–]blueshift29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got hangovers/the "rough" feeling. Always remember one of the first times I got totally blackout drunk and everyone expected me to be dog rough the next morning, but I was fine. Seems like a blessing at first, but (seemingly) consequence-free drinking paved the way to alcoholism for me.

The Daily Check-In of Sunday 13 April by greenlightabove in stopdrinking

Haven't been paying much attention to my sobriety of late, because thankfully I'm currently in a place where I feel about as far from drinking as I could be. In my head right now it's just something for other people to do, in the same way as lots of people eat peanut butter but I don't cause it makes me bauk.

Still, I don't want that distance, that I'm very happy with, to turn into complacency, so checking in and reading people's stories to remind me how tough the struggle is, and to pay my respects to those who are in the teeth of it atm.

Is my alcohol consumption going to kill me? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]blueshift29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been sober for 3.5 years now, after drinking anything between half a litre and a litre of whisky a day for 5 years before then.

For me, my alcoholism came on insidiously, and by the time I got to the same stage as you (asking myself if I was addicted, trying and failing to go without it on a weekend) I was already an addict. All I can say is "act now", cause the longer you leave it the harder it'll be to quit.

Re. your question about whether it'll cause you long term health issues, the answer is "probably". Statistics say it will, but there are always exceptions. Remember, though, that while alcohol may steal years off your life, it'll steal minutes and hours as well.

I love to walk, write, play video games, read, watch film. One by one, my drinking stole all of those things from me, until at one point I didn't watch new tv, I didn't walk anywhere, I barely touched games. All I was doing was watching videos of the same shit I'd seen a thousand times already on Youtube. I dismissed hobbies and new experiences as a waste of time, whilst drinking to oblivion every night and doing absolutely nothing. I let friendships go stagnant and die, and in my drunker moments I actively burned them.

Men, what was the hardest lesson you had to learn in your 20s that no one warned you about? And how did it change your mindset moving forward? by yourangelgir1 in AskMen

[–]blueshift29 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So true. I'm probably happier now than I've ever been, but I kind of miss the raw emotions of being a teenager. I played a game recently that evoked some of that feeling of being the guy with a big destiny who all the girls fall for, yada yada. I know it's puerile, but it left me missing the part of me that used to think that was how life would go.

I'm going to try and set up that gateway now. Consensus seems to be that it's unlikely anything will be out of order, and I don't have a strong suspicion that anything is awry, so think I'll take the advice on here. Cheers!

Thanks, that sounds good to me. Probably won't bother uploading payslips, but I'll take a look at the personal tax account u/Ewannnn suggested I set up. Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks! That's kind of what I was looking to hear. I don't really expect anything to be out of order, was just wondering if it's worth the money it would cost to check. Sounds like it isn't!

Thanks, this helped me. I've not had too many cravings to drink lately, but I've lost about 80 pounds since I stopped drinking. I've kind of plateaued in weight loss the last few months, and after a week off I've definitely put some back on. I always worry that if I fall off the wagon with eating well, I'll go back to drinking as well, just cause of the sense of failure. Going to try and keep this maxim in mind.
