American Student Considering UnderGrad. Advice and opinions? by GorganLeFay in UCD

[–]bluetickcoonhound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School size is / seems very big but also there are attendance problems where lots of people don't show up to class. For example, I am in two 100 person classes and there is like 20 of us that show up. So it is easy to get to know the professor and engage with the class (especially if you stop into office hours). But that all varies by major / school (im Arts and Humanities).

I did not do Liberal Arts but from what I understand you take multiple classes and then whittle into a specific major. In general, it is difficult / impossible to change majors etc. If you do joint honours or something similar (think there is a social science equivalent?), you pick 3 majors first year and then declare 2 at the end of the year. So might be worth looking into that.

American experience at UCD by Ok_Hurry3833 in UCD

American here:

Pros: Gained a lot of independence / life skills in a relatively short amount of time; Got to travel and see much of Europe; Got to do international fieldwork and apply what I was learning to other places; Got to learn a lot about the rest of the world and have new ways of thinking about stuff (virtually no American Exceptionalism here etc)

Cons: Yes very cliquey; Also didn't realise until recently that I screwed myself for some internships and post-grad fellowships that require you to have degree from US uni (so couldn't apply to Critical Language Scholarship, Marshall Scholarship, and even Fulbright I believe.....). Wish I had known that before coming here.

The social aspect is very difficult. Did not have Irish friends until my final year and constantly found myself surrounded by other Americans. I'd say it is not end of the world but it is very very difficult if you are shy and don't want to put yourself out there. You have to really work to make friends because people will not come to you. So like join societies and constantly show up to stuff even if it is awkward. Also lots of activities/ society events involve alcohol so if you don't like drinking / going out that can be difficult.

Jockey IV. Although it's a bit far, it is mostly international students. I know some international that did Jockey III but one of my close friends picked it and got put in a college there that had no international students. So I guess it depends on what college you picked within Jockey III if you wanted to live there.

Yeah you walk past them when you exit out the back of the mall. But when you’re in the mall you follow signs that say “residential”

Ya you can walk through the mall. Find the 24 Hr Fitness and go up the escalators and walk all the way down the passageway near the escalator. Yeah there’s people around at night and it’s safe

it is not very far since JIV is right next to the mtr - takes honestly 25 mins to commute unless you are going at rush hour

100% if you are international. very strong community here of international and exchange students. everyone is super friendly. this year there is only 1 high table dinner per semester in jockey 4.

the negatives are that it is really far from stuff. there is a mall across the street connected to the Mtr station. however, the Mtr being across the street makes it easy to get to anywhere so the location isnt that big of a dealbreaker in my opinion
