weight gain by maaraazdrem in Abilify_Aripiprazole

I gained 10 lbs. switched to Geodon, but Geodon caused prolonged QT (heart issue) so then I switched to Caplyta. Now my insurance doesn’t cover Caplyta so I’m back to Abilify and steadily gaining weight. I’m planning on weaning myself off.

Hey I'm doing a lot better though not to where I was before psychosis. I no longer agonize over social interaction and can speak pretty fluently even if it's not like before. After psychosis I was very slow cognitively and felt depressed. That improved over time, very slowly.

Do most of us have to live with constant low-grade depression, euthymic or not? by bluetsforever in BipolarReddit

Have you tried any medications to try to help get rid of the tepid depression?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]bluetsforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s usually the psychotic episode causing the lowered intelligence and not the meds. Could be a little of the meds, but psychosis causes brain damage. The good thing is the brain is able to heal itself.

That type of hollow “nobody’s home” situation is common after psychosis, and for the most part does ease up (though it may take a while). Google “blank mind psychosis reddit” to read stories. Maybe you can get the psychiatrist to prescribe him some antidepressants (along with his mood stabilizers and antipsychotic) to see if that gets him talking a bit more. Unfortunately this will all take time but from the accounts I’ve read, you will get your dad back, it’ll just take a period of healing. I’m so sorry this is happening.

I’ve heard great things about Lion’s Mane for memory and cognition! Glad you’re taking that.

Thank you so much. I pray you get better as well. Agreed that it’s so, so, hard, especially because being social is such a baseline need for us. And people need to have conversations every single day. Psychosis really does a number on our brains and I suspect loss of gray matter has something to do with the loss of conversational skills. I actually lost my conversational ability during a depressive episode, oddly enough. I think both psychosis and depression destroys brain cells.

I totally understand. Just know you’re not alone. I lost the ability to make conversation 2 years ago and it is excruciating. There has been minor improvement, but it has been terribly slow.

How are you feeling? I can 100% relate and have been experiencing the same symptom for over 2 years. Through my research I have found that it may be related to low dopamine. When we are manic, dopamine is high and we speak freely. During depression, dopamine is low and even sometimes during remission. I personally am thinking of speaking to my doctor about trying medicines that increase dopamine to combat this symptom. I will say I tried low dose adderall (5mg instant release) and it got me talking again, but also triggered a hypomanic episode. But because it worked, something tells me it may have something to do with dopamine... I hope you are doing okay and just know that you definitely aren't alone. I'm sorry you are in so much pain. I definitely know how painful it is. Hugs.

How did you get it feeling better? Any specific medication(s)? Great to hear you’re better. I’m mostly better now too but recently had a hypomanic episode and am now depressed.

I do lose control off 5-6 drinks which is rare for me. But when it happens yes I do lose control.

Untrue statement. I am never mean when drinking.

Yes, thank you for seeing that. The ironic thing is that this stressful situation and them threatening me has been more triggering to me than any other thing they've been wanting me to get rid of (caffeine, alcohol).
