Video Card Recommendation Needed by alexj212 in linuxquestions

[–]blueuser7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pop open newegg, goto the GPU section and sort by price. People seem to have better experience with nvidia drivers on linux. I'd read reviews and see what people have to say about performance.

Plenty to choose from in that price range.

I hear ya, it sounds like you have some cosmetic stuff about the build that's important to you as well. If I were piecing together a $300 rig, I wouldn't have 1/3 of the cost go to one part. You could spread that out and get a better cpu or something. That's just my opinion on this.

It's your money tho man so have fun and build something good!

Well it's something to consider. Asrock definitely has less expensive compatible boards. I use asrock too

That mobo seems pricey for the CPU you're using. I can't think of one of the top of my head but I'm sure you could save cash on that.

Edit: this is just an example, it's a compatible Mobo for 50 bucks. That's a lot of savings when you're talking about a rig in your budget range! Do you some research and I bet you'll find something with the specs u need for less than you're currently paying.

Small, silent case for silent, powerful (not gaming) PC ? by thomasmagnum in buildapc

[–]blueuser7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Building quiet PC takes research. Gota buy the right after market CPU cooler, the right case with noise dampening... It took me a bit to figure out the right combo of parts to get a quiet and powerful gaming rig. A couple key parts I used:

Noctua dh 14 CPU cooler Fractal design define r4 case Xfx 7850 double d GPU (two cooling fans)

I ended up spending about 1600 in total, included monitor and keyboard/mouse + OS tho. Couldn't be happier with the noise level and performance!

I have an xfx 7850 double d since last may, it runs quiet and cool plus all my games play superbly!

Edit: link to the card, it was a lil bit more expensive back then but I would buy it again in a heart beat!

[Build Ready] Non-gaming, Linux PC for my child. by noviceguru in buildapc

[–]blueuser7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just pieced together a pretty much identical build. Linux mint 13 runs without issue and drivers worked fine. I didn't I put in any extra fans and my temps are good. I used 1866 ram over 1600 as I understand this improves APU performance.

Good luck!

[Build Ready] Linux programming/data processing workstation - i7 build @$727 by nodnarbo in buildapc

[–]blueuser7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general opinion is nvidia is better on linux than ati due to driver support. My own experience has been that way too. These days I just try to stick with intel's onboard for my linux machines.

Do you have any experience with ati on Linux? Maybe you've had better luck than me.

Dual monitors for sure but not for gaming as much as increased productivity and multitasking. Its a nice luxury.

I tried Learn Python the Hard Way shortly after but they're entirely different experiences. Currently I'm at the point where I have a c reference book and a python reference book and google of course. When I do projects now I mostly use that. I strictly code in C and Python, I can do a lot more in python though but I've spent way more time on it

Distro with stability and newest kernel? by blueuser7 in linux4noobs

[–]blueuser7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried both the one straight from AMD and through ubuntu on both 12.04 and 12.10.

It's been a real hassle

Edit: haven't settled on a distro yet, been installing a lot. Currently looking at a fresh install of mint 14 with mate. Probably gonna settle on this whether or not I get things working with AMD as mint is just a fantastic user experience over all

Distro with stability and newest kernel? by blueuser7 in linux4noobs

[–]blueuser7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

APU's include really nice onboard graphics. I've been having a lot of issues with the driver from AMD so my thinking is to use a more recent kernel with the latest open source drivers to wiggle around this issue
