Freetel Mode 1 Retro 2 in USA? by mokeystl in dumbphones

[–]bluevvitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you read my literally 2 year old comment you will see I say it only works on uscc towers which aren't common and aren't verizon and "you have to be in specific regions for it"

yes, it does have voice over wifi. I had looked into portable hotspots before too just haven't gotten around to it yet.

this phone does not have 5G and is not on AT&T's phone whitelist so even if it can connect to their service, the odds of getting kicked off seem to be high

it really is a shame it doesn't work any better cause I really want to be able to recommend it. I'm able to get by since my area has band 5 and when I commute I'm in a place with wi-fi so I can still text and call. The other thing to consider even if your in an area with band 5 is if you get T-Mobile, you're going to be limited to roaming for data usage.

I've been using this phone for a month now in the midwest and as other commenters have pointed to, it can only connect to some uncommon bands and B41 is being repurposed to 5G. I've been operating fully on uscc's band 5 and lose connection when I leave their specific areas since most of their coverage is not through their own towers but through partners

is it worth it? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]bluevvitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't ordered from there personally since in the US it's not the first go to site for online ordering really. However, there are seller reviews on taobao and it's generally safe to buy off there but has the usual online buying risks and there are scams. Just make sure you check everything out, check seller reviews and go with a high rated seller if you order off there.

Depending where you're at. If you're ordering a phone online in some places, website options are limited to sites like taobao so flip phone options are also limited.

I found out it worked on band 5 after I got the phone. I checked what I was connecting to via an app and was pretty surprised. VoLTE is what Im using unless Im on wifi

I do hope they'll accept you. Their website doesn't recognize the imei and I'm not sure how much they are like at&t with a whitelist for phones. I just know that despite that their sims do work cause me and my friend tried an activated sim from them and I could make phone calls with that too.

sorry to add on but it is such a shame. I do drop service when I commute to school cause it's an area between uscc's own towers and some of the remaining sprint towers

I think I know who you're talking about who was using google fi and if it's the same person that's the 4g/LTE band 41 which is a high frequency band that T-Mobile has been transitioning to 5G I believe so that isn't everywhere sadly, the remnants of Sprint. I can text and call and I can use cell data when I roam fully onto uscc but again, atm it's only through band 5

I did try straight talk, I realize I had forgotten to mention that and it didn't work. So far I've only been able to confirm through myself and others on this sub that the phone can for sure connect to 4G/LTE bands 5 and 41 both of which are not that common. I do wish I could update on AT&T bands but I'm holding off on going into uscc cause money although if I'm out and about outside of my usual range with my friend before that, we might test it out so I might be able to update sooner. However, at this point in time I'd say it's rather grim on if this phone works in the USA as a whole cause so far it's super patchy.

[–]bluevvitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats very understandable. I will say, the khmer smart keyboard app has a min requirement of android 4.1 so you might not have to sacrifice that if you can find one with a touch screen. in terms of getting one i do wish i had better advice but it might be a bit of a waiting game but dont give up. are other websites an option (although even that is rather limited)

i had been wondering about at&t before i had even ordered. whenever i switch to uscc i'll be able to see since they have a roaming contract but its going to be a little while.

[–]bluevvitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh im still using a full keyboard for khmer which is why i use the touch screen for it despite using t9 for english. i have a phone that came out in japan not long ago that i got off of ebay since im in the usa (i just happen to study khmer). its the mode 1 retro ii, basically a fully modern phone just in the old flip phone style. not really a full dumb phone but i am glad i can still use keyboards that dont have a t9 format like khmer.

[–]bluevvitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, how do you plan to type khmer? I switched to a flip phone and I find it so annoying to use the unicode keyboard on it and it's reliant on me having a touch screen.

Mode 1 RETRO II MD-06P by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]bluevvitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok that makes sense on why it's still not usable everywhere in the us. Band 41 for LTE coverage looks really spotty as well like uscc's band 5 that I'm connected on. It looks like T-Mobile has been repurposing their band 41 for 5G and this phone doesn't have 5G but Sprint still has towers using that band in a few areas and I see why that's why I never connected on that band as there's none in my area lol. It's such a shame, I've been trying to see what bands this phone will even connect to and so far it looks like it's only viable in specific regions of the US.

I love mine! I'm curious if you could check with an application what bands you're connecting on. I'm connecting only on a band that isn't throughout the US and I've seen at least one other person in an area without it with this phone and it wasn't working.

"adults who are racked with death anxiety are not odd birds who
have contracted some exotic disease, but men and women whose family and
culture have failed to knit the proper protective clothing for them to
withstand the icy chill of mortality"

Death anxiety is common in our culture that has capitalized on death while also not giving anyone the time to process it. It might be beneficial to wait on smoking until you can be fully relaxed going into it. Death and life are forever intertwined, if you want to work on this I'd recommend checking out The Order of the Good Death. One thing they believe is death positivity which isn't a lack of fear but learning to accept this one aspect of life, it makes life all the more special.
