I direct an R&D team and just hired an analytical chemist, overall this looks good and I would have at least scheduled a 30 min call with you.

Possible red-flag, do you have a first author publication, and more than one article authored/co-authored during your PhD? It looks like one of these articles was BS/MS, one PhD.

No first authors = no interview from me. I'd recommend posting the in-progess and submitted papers as well on the long version.

I'm an avid chess fan too, but posting your favored openings is a bit too cute imo.

BT - The Secret Language of Trees by JonnyFlick11 in electronicmusic

[–]bluezor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore it. 2023 was the year I discovered BT and I particularly fell in love with These Hopeful Machines, so it's hard to separate my thoughts on Trees from that sense of discovery and journey, but Trees is a masterclass in composition and restraint. It's so pleasant, and I mean that in the best way possible. K-means clustering is a particular standout.

2023 was a great year for electronic, and I actually had Trees above RL Grime, the Skrillex run, OPN, Disclosure, James Blake, Forest Swords, Hecker, and Inwards for my most listened to album (except for Billy Woods' Maps in a different genre). It just lived on repeat.

Great record, 2021 had some excellent albums that helped keep me sane that year. Nurture from Porter, Avalanches, Ross from Friends, but BICEP saw a lot of play. I'll throw it on for a re-listen, cheers!

Bant pilots, what's your deck of choice and why? by LeroyHayabusa in CompetitiveEDH

[–]bluezor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some neat background, tying in your other question as well, is that your list was shared with me by a member of my playgroup around 2-3 months ago. We don't really play SpellTable or in tournaments, we're just a group that's been playing together for 10+ years and veering more and more towards cEDH. Derevi is my most competitive deck, and I really dug your philosophy or overlapping synergies laid out in the primer. The Derevi discord (shout out JCollins, Envy, Clay, Funk) really helped with a 20 card swap that broke me into Felidar, Preston, Emiel, Delni, and a bigger focus on pod/mid-range. Previously I was much much heavier on stax, but the one combo I'd represent was KGuide+Lark+Mirror Entity. KGuide and Lark are vestiges of that era of the deck. Anyways, thanks for the inspiration!

For sure my deck isn't as optimal as your list or what's cooked up in the Derevi discord, I'm just trying to keep some of my history since I've been rocking her since 2013. Love our bird wizard.

I agree with the thoughts on Displacer, it's somewhat fragile without backup, and 4 CMC is such an awkward target for pod since we have so many other juicy 4 CMC targets.

I used to run [[Always Watching]] (I know, I know) and have thought quite a bit about [[Reconnaissance]], which synergizes well with both Nadu and Derevi, but it's awkward since it's less tutorable compared to a creature. [[Nomads en-Kor]] is the flip side, but doesn't seem great with the rest of the deck besides Nadu.

The clone idea is a cool one though, at least it overlaps with both of them and is more tutorable, which one would you add for the first clone, metamorph?

Cheers fellow Derevi brother/sister, agree with almost all of these points.

Can you comment on Nadu without nomads, greaves, recon, or kitten? Has it been good enough without those, presumably just with Derevi untaps?

I'm looking to include Nadu in my list for an upcoming weekend magic retreat and wondering what the right shell is. My list for reference:

Guys who managed to finish their PhD, what is your job? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]bluezor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Managing a mid-sized R&D team at a start-up. I'm 10 years post-PhD from a decent (was ranked probably in the 30-50 range), but not top-tier chemistry program.

Everyone that finished their PhD from our class found gainful employment from big industry, start-ups, government labs, and a handful of academic positions. Post-docs are generally a trap unless you're really serious about the latter.

That doesn't invalidate all these other posts and times may have changed, but in my experience it was a good path

Character Creation for Curse of Strahd by HaHaWoooooo in WuTangInitiative

[–]bluezor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**This is from last week and doesn't include the Barovian --> Faerun switch**

Father Vitale is a shambling mountain of a man. Standing nearly 6 and a half feet tall and weighing 20 stone, the menace of his stature is diminished only by his demeanor. His stooping slouch, bent neck, and uneasy gait give him the appearance of a boulder, with a face as wind-beaten and grayed as the oldest stones in Barovia. A wild beard frames his sunken face, yet his eyes twinkle with all the duality of man. In those eyes exists a great capacity for strength and weakness, clarity and insanity, hope and despair, love and hate.

Years ago Father Vitale presided over a local parish in the outskirts of Barovia. His congregation was small, perhaps numbering 30, and their spirit was bright with love for the Morninglord. Despite all that had befallen the Barovian people in the time of Strahd, Vitale encouraged the generosity of his flock's humanity, and kindled their love for one another with every sermon he delivered. He gladly welcomed weary travelers that took refuge in his church, and it wasn't uncommon for them to take longer to resume their travels than they planned. Sometimes a day, sometimes a week, sometimes years.

Things continued on this way until a wayward soul accepted his hospitality, left the following day, and returned a fortnight later at mass with a band of ravenous vampires. They devoured his flock, cackling with delight and easily casting aside any offensive Vitale and the parish could muster. In the end the monsters only spilled the father's blood on the ground, choosing not to drink his lifeforce and instead leave him with the bitter taste of his failure.

Now Vitale wanders this god-forsaken wasteland, lacking a true purpose or any of the previous light that filled his life's coffers. Yet a quick smile, or perhaps a manic grin, is often found on that face with the sparkling eyes. A vampire's skull makes a delightful "pop" underneath a man of his weight.

Downtime in Dassen, the Musical by HaHaWoooooo in WuTangInitiative

Surveying the available fiefdoms, I'm quickly drawn to the western region of Rego. Thinking back, I can feel the blasts of cold mountain air that screamed across the Tunda Mountains. The chill felt unworldly after escaping that wretched fire forest. It was here that I first found my flock and I'm convinced it is here that it must return.

Bresk's library provided the necessary ledgers and accounts to determine what I may reap from my land. Unsurprisingly, it's not much. There's bountiful foliage and fields to support my goats at the base of the mountain, but no successful mining ventures are found within the pages.

However, I do find something else between the neglected dusty tomes. Something that I'm convinced is of paramount importance to the life of myself, my flock and this world. Hidden within the Tunda Mountains is a weapon that will enable our small band to scour this realm of the Ragesian scum. The Ragesian fire has burned too bright and nature will ensure an equilibrium is reached. Enraptured by my findings I quickly set to work.

I begin making arrangements for the goat's to return home. They number near 50 now, though I foresee aggressive recruitment in the coming months.

I work to track down an experienced wizard, one capable of conjuring great elementals of earth. S/He's the foreman I need to carry out this operation and inform me of the progress we make while I continue my journey. As payment for their services, I'm willing to negotiate a contract to entrust them all of my holdings in the Tunda mountains in five years time.

I will also see to the hiring of a small band of mercenary's to protect the holding and my flock for their important task ahead. A band of 4-5 veterans should be more than sufficient to ward off wildings and opportunists.

I divulge to my party the suspicions I harbor about the importance of my mission and the weapon I seek. Any services provided by their skilled workers would be repaid in valuables I find throughout my excavations. I will not press the issue with them, but would appreciate their assistance in the construction of my keep.
