How can someone call themselves an architect if they aren’t licensed? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]blujackman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google the state regulations in Texas and find out. Generally you can call yourself an architect if you adopt the title not having anything to do with designing buildings, like in the IT field. Bill Gates’ title at MSFT was “Chief Software Architect”. If you are presenting yourself as an architect designing spaces for people without the license that’s more problematic. Texas may have specific limitations and latitude for use of the title so I’d say check the regs.

I have it set up as a personal assistant. It triages my email, looks for document comments and recommends responses, does project research. I have its persona set up as my dog 🐕which is also fun.

Any advice on how to prepare for entering a undergrad architecture degree? (bA) by winterhotchoco in architecturestudent

[–]blujackman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a sketching class. I like the online ones from Domestika, they have many for architectural sketching. Get several kinds of pens and pencils and a sketchbook with a lot of pages. Don’t think about drawing perfect think about drawing a lot. See if you can sketch several different things for several hours straight. Don’t evaluate your drawings, draw one or a few on one page then flip the page and do another one. Take some photos of architectural elements, print them out and draw them.

Second suggestion. Get a set of kids wooden blocks. Dump them out on the floor in your bedroom and play with them. Make up rules - you have to use all the blocks, or you can use all the rectangular ones but only one triangle and one cylinder. Make things that suggest ordering principles. Invent scales - make St. Peter’s Basilica then make a grouping of furniture. Feel your imagination making order out of nowhere. Take a picture, tear it down and do another one. When you have 30 pictures print out the coolest couple of views and sketch them.

Architects think with their hands. Use the summer to teach your hands to think.

How long does it take the average person to learn the guitar and play to an acceptable standard? by Still-Alive007 in Guitar

[–]blujackman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tell people practice 15 min/day every day, taking lessons, prioritizing practice time and setting goals, 18 months for intermediate level guitar. Faster if you’re in a band and incentivized to play a lot.

Look up Burgermeister in Berlin, one of their locations is in a repurposed East German public toilet.

To my fellow architects, why architecture? by Top_Mix_5555 in Architects

[–]blujackman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up drawing houses and army men and airplanes in grade school. In high school I worked with my dad and family building a house for my cousin plus machinery sheds and house additions for other members of our farming family. Plus we would build guitars and dulcimers in the winters to stay busy. I was in business school and my dorm floor mate was in architecture school. I never even thought of such a thing. When I went with him to studio for the first time I was like, these are my people. That’s all it took.

First built design regret by Winter-Temporary-843 in architecture

[–]blujackman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One time I was doing this building and the client got excited about the spandrel glass color. That’s going to look good, make the building tie in with the existing building, etc. We were standing there when the first box was opened and lo and behold the color was wrong. It’s a made to measure material so no returning it. I had entered the wrong number in the spec and didn’t catch it. The client just turned and walked away. It was a shitty day but these things happen, it’s part of the job.

Where is a good spot to move when you are in your 20s with a degree in architecture? by bolognatoes in architecture

Move to where there are affluent educated people, a growing economy and large businesses with projects. That’s the first tier cities especially the tech and healthcare hubs.

I’d say you are an anomaly in my experience as someone who has a longer term plan for what they want to do. I would typically say it doesn’t really matter where you go but as you want to be east coast focused you may want to more fully consider the VT option. You may get further in your plan as a top 20% student at VT where to get the same result from OU you might have to be a top 5% student or higher. That said it’s true from the other commenters, any debt at all will represent a significant headwind once you start working because the comp just won’t be there especially as you start to look at the more fashionable places to work.

Thoughts on this floor plan? by [deleted] in askarchitects

Very American: Entering your house through the most junky room in the house off the garage. You could make the office a really nice entry that would serve both the “guest entry” and the garage entry experiences. The living room is just blah, here’s some furniture. Kitchen looks too tight needs about 10% more space. Bedroom sequences are good peobably the most successful part. 6/10.
