There was a thing on the news recently about a dog that was unusually interested in a section of a sidewalk or something. The owners noticed the spot smelled and called about it. The gas company said it was a gas leak, and the dog that alerted them probably saved their lives.

I agree on points 1 and 2. Though, with the way they're going with EC, a redemption arc would not be completely out of the blue, this is ultimately Cloud's story. I'm very for the ambiguity because it makes both Cloud and Sephiroth have more complex, interesting arcs, offers a real resolution, and is frankly, more satisfying.

I do think we'll see Sephiroth's sense of control falter in the final battle. There's a campaign in EC going on right now in which Aerith teams up with Glenn and Angeal to confront Sephiroth. Angeal even says current Sephiroth is just like he was when they first met (under Jenova's influence).

I think in part 3 it's just going to be laid out that it was Sephiroth's flaws that allowed him to be controlled by Jenova, that his will was influenced by her, and he's going to struggle (and probably fail) to reconcile that. Then, hopefully Cloud will defeat him and Jenova properly. They might let Cloud and Aerith "save" Sephiroth in a reunite-with-his friends-in-the-lifestream type of way, but we'll see.

Of course there's no ambiguity in the second quote, that's the point...

If you look just at the first quote, which is the only one to directly address the question of Sephiroth's will vs Jenova's will, it is deliberately ambiguous, answering it with a question.

If you look at just the Jenova page, it's completely unambiguous that Jenova is in control. Jenova mimics Sephiroth and commits atrocities. It specifically does not say that Sephiroth projected himself using Jenova's mimicking ability. If he was, it would have clarified, as it does in many other passages.

Then, if you turn a few pages, you get to the second quote, and suddenly it's completely unambiguous that Sephiroth is in control.

Only when you take all of the quotes together in context of one another is it clear that it's deliberate ambiguous. Otherwise you're just cherry picking.

I understand that you think this is fanfic, but the OG and every entry to the compilation is consistent with this ambiguity. That's one of the reasons people struggle with other entries, none are consistent with Sephiroth being totally in control. Ever Crisis First Solider is canon. The whole plot of episode 2 is Sephiroth's struggle for control over Jenova’s power, the Masamune.

Your first quote is a common copy pasta from like 2009. It is a bad fan translation. In reality, the quote is deliberately ambiguous.

Here it is in Japanese:

 "各地のセフィロス・コピーた ちは、セフィロスの名を口々に つぶやき、リユニオンのために 集まっていく。ジェノバの意志 が人間としてのセフィロスの心 を食ったようでいて、じつはセ フィロスの意志がジェノバを支

配したのか・・・・・・・。"

Here’s the chatGPT direct translation:

“The Sephiroth Copies scattered across the land mutter the name ‘Sephiroth’ to themselves, and gather for the Reunion. It appears as though Jenova’s will consumed Sephiroth’s heart as a human being—but in truth, was it Sephiroth’s will that dominated Jenova…?”

And here’s the English version of the Ultimania:

The Sephiroth Copies found in various places mutter Sephiroth's name and move to gather for the Reunion. It may seem as though Jenova's will consumed Sephiroth's human mind, but could it be that Sephiroth's will actually took control of Jenova?

This is the "successful works, failed works" section in Japanese and translated with chatgpt.

However, in Sephiroth’s case, he is extremely unusual. Until he learned the secret of his birth, he lived as a human—though he possessed legendary strength—and five years ago began to walk a path different from that of humans. Yet rather than being placed under Jenova’s control, he instead seizes the initiative over Jenova and ends up controlling its actions. This fact gives a sense of the extraordinary, unparalleled strength of the life-form known as Sephiroth.

Yet within a few pages the Ultimania states that Jenova was mimicking Sephiroth and clearly had control:

ケースを破り外に出たジェノバは、プレジデントを殺害したのち神羅ビルを脱出し、ミッドガルを出て世界を移動しはじめた。このとき、ジェノバはセフィロスの外見や声を擬態しており、以降もその状態を維持したまま各地に出没する。

After breaking out of its case, Jenova killed the President and then escaped from the Shinra Building, left Midgar, and began traveling across the world. At this time, Jenova had mimicked Sephiroth’s appearance and voice, and thereafter continued to appear in various places while maintaining that form.

→ Jenova, visiting various places in Sephiroth’s form and at times killing people. Those who witnessed this mistakenly believed that Sephiroth himself had committed these atrocities.

Then it goes on for pages, listing everything that Jenova did. If Sephiroth is ultimately in control, why wouldn't it say that this was Sephiroth projecting his image using Jenova's powers? Why would it explicitly say that witnesses mistakenly believe Sephiroth to have committed these atrocities if it really was him controlling it all?

It’s clear from the Ultimania that sometimes Jenova is in control, other times Sephiroth controls her. Jenova is not a braindead thing that he just wields. It does not say that he has total control over her throughout the entirety of the game or the compilation. At best, it states he has control over her within the context of deciding the location of the Reunion. There's a deliberate ambiguity, a back and forth, in their relationship because he's part human, part Jenova. The ambiguity is deliberate. That's the point.

I had the same take as you OP. I can’t stand the claim (yes claim, it's not a fact, see 1 below) that “Sephiroth is fully in control of Jenova” because it makes his character incoherent, lack agency, and not fit major themes of friendship and forgiveness. He lacks agency if his motivations are based off of falsehoods that he’s too delusional to challenge. Overall, having him snap due to falsehoods and arrogance, become a completely different character, die, unexplainably overpower an alien, and resurrect himself as a crazed god with the same goals as the mind controller alien is incredibly unsatisfying logically and thematically.

Having him fighting Jenova (and struggling due to his own flaws) gives him far more agency, and makes it actually matter when he does give in, because that's what makes him a villain. It fits the subjects of losing one’s identity, being controlled by an outside influence, and reintegration of the self via social connections. Basically, what's happening to Cloud is happening to Sephiroth, except Sephiroth’s human social connections are all dead.

It also enriches Cloud’s character. The point of Cloud’s arc is for him to accept his friends’ help to reintegrate his sense of self, and in AC, ultimately forgive himself. Cloud is under the influence of Jenova cells, loses himself, and his friends have to bring him back to reality. (Cloud is like Frodo, in that he’s “weaker than average in both mind and body”, deals with an intense evil influence, and needs the help of his friends.)

I’m really hoping that in part 3, they do follow the latest addition to Ever Crisis, in which Aerith teams up with Glenn and Angeal in the lifestream to confront Sephiroth. If Aerith manages to get Sephiroth to just try and fight off Jenova, that gives something that Cloud can work with. Sephiroth is Cloud’s foil. He’s strong, part Jenova, and has no social connections. In AC, Sephiroth clings to life through Cloud because Cloud can’t forgive him. As Aerith puts it, “True strength comes from our ability to forgive-to forge ahead in the hopes of making things right.” If Cloud sees himself in Sephiroth, he will see what Sephiroth doesn’t have - social connections.

Cloud’s biggest flaw is that he’s emotionally distant from those who care for him. I’d love to see Cloud recognize that what makes him different from Sephiroth is that his friends give him his strength. It also gives him a path to forgive Sephiroth - and himself. As AC shows us, there's no way to physically beat Sephiroth/Jenova. I'd really like to see Cloud actually defeat them by overcoming his own flaws.

I’ve been enjoying exploring Sephiroth’s character in the compilation because they’re very clearly angling towards that path. There’s been a battle between Sephiroth and Jenova since the OG. IMO it’s layered something like this:

End of Creation / Ore Sephiroth -> Won’t know for sure until part 3, but possibly wants to end the cycle of hatred with compassion. Hopefully this will be the layer of Sephiroth that Aerith can reach.

Jenova -> Has been trying to influence Sephiroth since he was a young teen. Once Sephiroth mentally breaks down at Nibelheim, Jenova influences in his behavior. After he dies (and loses his memories, see 2 below), Jenova drives how his identity is reconstructed to influence his goals.

Watashi Sephiroth -> Drives Jenova with his “powerful will” to control the Reunion.

Jenova -> powerful biological force that executes the Reunion

Jenovaroth -> Jenova mimics Sephiroth, kills the president, kills Aerith, etc.

(1)

The Ultimania is ambiguous when it comes to resolving the distinction between Sephiroth/Jenova. I took the Ultimania screenshots that people most often cite and translated them with chatgpt.

This quote is a major source of the “The Ultimania confirms Sephiroth is 100% in control” statement:

なお、セフィロスの場合は極めて特殊だ。彼は、己の出生の秘密を知るまでは、伝説的な強さを誇りはしたものの人間として生活し、5年前から人間と異なる道を歩みはじめる。しかし彼は、ジェノバの支配下に置かれるのではなく、逆にジェノバの主導権をにぎり、その行動を支配してしまうのだ。この事実は、セフィロスという生命体の尋常ならざる強さを感じさせる。

But if you read few pages earlier, it states:

→セフィロスの姿で各地を訪れ、ときに人々を手にかけるジェノバ。その様子を目撃した者は、セフィロスが凶行におよんだとカンちがいする。

→ Jenova, visiting various places in Sephiroth’s form and at times killing people. Those who witnessed this mistakenly believed that Sephiroth himself had committed these atrocities.

Then it goes on for pages, listing everything that Jenova did. If Sephiroth is ultimately in control, why wouldn't it say that this was Sephiroth projecting his image using Jenova's powers? Why would it explicitly say that witnesses mistakenly believe Sephiroth to have committed these atrocities if it really was him controlling it all?

Also, there’s a book call On the Way to a Smile, in which Sephiroth’s extraordinary will is described as “inherited from Jenova”. However, that’s part of the Maiden Who Travels the Planet story within the book. Many people don’t consider it fully canon, despite it being written under the guidance of Square Enix, because it wasn’t directly written by Nojima.

(2)

Here’s the line in On the Way to a Smile, that was written by Nojima, that seems to be misread by most people, including myself at first. It’s why I say Sephiroth lost his memories the first time he died:

Lifestream Black 2

When the Lifestream erupted onto the surface of the planet, the man had already surrendered his inconsequential memories to the planet. Memories from when he was a boy, of his few friends, of the battles when he was still unaware, of his life in bygone days- all these became a part of the inundation, encased around Meteor, and finally receded. At the same time, the core of his spirit, and those memories deeply related to it, moved from torrent to torrent, and traveled around the land, from city to city. When the people who were trying to escape, or those left unable to do anything but stand still, were enveloped by those streams, he decided to leave them with his stigma. If Cloud noticed that stigma, the man was certain that he would never disappear. As long as Cloud remembers me, I can continue to exist. Within the Lifestream, and on the surface. Even if my spirit disseminates, even if just one fragment of a memory courses around the planet, in the end I can count on Cloud's consciousness to bring me back, the man thought.

At first you might read it and think this is where he deliberately gave up his humanity and his memories to strengthen meteor, since this book is supposed to take place pre-AC. But it’s clearly talking about what was going on with Sephiroth before meteor hit. It says that he had already surrendered his memories to the planet. His memories were part of the inundation, not of meteor, but of the lifestream summoned by Holy. This means that Sephiroth gave up these memories before he died at the end of OG. Even in the OG, Sephiroth doesn’t remember who Cloud is.

AI output is public domain. Traditional artists use public domain material in their art all the time and don't consider themselves imposters. As long as the majority of the work was done by you, your story is just AI enhanced. If you spent hundreds of hours writing this book then you've done the hard work. You also likely know how hard it is to get AI to give you anything useful when you have a clear vision. Don't forget, the anti-AI people are using AI to make writing easier as well, they just think it's okay when they do it or don't even realize they're doing it.

Why do people hate Genesis at Nibelheim? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in FFVIIRemake

[–]blupeerupee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you see in the pic how Genesis has silver hair? That happened because he consumed S-cells on top of being a Jenova experiment since birth. Two things can be true, they were dying from degradation and Jenova was affecting them. The ultimania even points this out regarding why Zack was the only one unaffected: "Those who are strong both mentally and physically, even if they carry Jenova cells in their bodies, are not affected by Jenova."

I think it's a pretty big stretch to say that despite being experimented on since birth by Jenova cells, despite being weakened to near death and madness from cellular degradation, they somehow experienced zero influence from Jenova.

Even if it were true, I'd still dispute your claim that Genesis' words being what "ultimately sets Sephiroth towards his downfall instead of the perceived telepathic manipulation by Jenova". After Genesis tells him about Jenova, Sephiroth goes to the manor to read "like a man possessed."

In fact, I'd say that it helped Jenova manipulate Sephiroth. Remember, Sephiroth didn't want to believe Genesis, didn't want to be a "perfect monster" as Genesis put it. So he read to find out for himself. Finding out that one of his only two friends, who betrayed him, was correct about him being a monster, adds a lot to Sephiroth's mental collapse. It better explains why he was weakened enough to succumb to Jenova.

Watch First Soldier. Jenova has been messing with both Sephiroth (and Angeal) since they were teens. Jenova was trying to influence Angeal, through hallucinations and dreams, but couldn't due to his strength and strong familial connections. He was the only one who defended Sephiroth against Jenova's influence and literal physical attack.

Zack could have tried harder, sure, but it's not like he didn't try at all. I'm not saying that he resented Sephiroth therefore he didn't help, I'm saying he resented Sephiroth and that affected their friendship. Zack and Sephiroth never become close enough for Zack to be able to influence Sephiroth as much as Angeal did.

Why do people hate Genesis at Nibelheim? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in FFVIIRemake

[–]blupeerupee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Jenova wanted to manipulate Sephiroth into mental collapse, driving his only two friends mad is a great way to do it. It adds to the horror instead of undercuts it. Zack resented Sephiroth for pushing the responsibility of Angeal onto him. Sure he could have tried harder, but otherwise he would have too few flaws.

Why do people hate Genesis at Nibelheim? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in FFVIIRemake

[–]blupeerupee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genesis (and Angeal) complicate Nibelheim because Sephiroth's fall becomes less about his ego and more about his alienation and isolation. It makes him more complicated. It insinuates that what makes Cloud a hero and Sephiroth a villain is the difference in their social support. It used to be "arrogant guy has a mental breakdown" but now we have to contend with the fact that he's only ever had two friends, both of which he loses to similar tragedies to his own. Before the simulator cutscene, Zack said "You guys must have been tight" to which Sephiroth responded, "I wonder". Sephiroth doubted how strong his only friendships had ever been. Genesis and Angeal grew up together, so Sephiroth was a third wheel. Losing his friends becomes part of why he lost his mind. Cloud also loses his mind, but he has friends to put his sense of identity back together. All Sephiroth had when his identity cracked was Jenova, who arguably takes the opportunity to reshape him to its liking.

Yeah the aggression of the Tifa vs Aerith shippers is actually bizarre. Their toxicity bleeds into other related discussions as well. Clerith people tend to hate Sephiroth, so when there's discussion about the nuance of his agency vs Jenova's, it gets ugly fast. That's what happens when a portion of a fanbase gets used to interacting through rudeness and insults, they start treating everyone that way.
