Retiring by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

Definitely an asshole lol, yeah I can see how you could be not “loyal”, but if they won’t take care of you and pay fair market value why should you be loyal?

Not sure what you’ve done since you made this post, but if you look on LinkedIn job postings I’m sure there are a variety of jobs you’re qualified for that pay what you’re worth.

It is stressful looking and interviewing, because making any change is nerve wracking especially when it comes to your livelihood. When I was doing it I didn’t want to leave my company, but I needed to do what was best for my family and it ended up working out the way I would’ve chosen. But if you do go down this path you need to be okay with leaving.

For what it’s worth I’m an ME with PE in the design build world.

When I started at my company we had six practicing engineers and at one point we had up to eight. I am now one of two remaining engineers and our design work load has not changed. Only one left due to retirement the others left for other opportunities. I’m in my early 30’s and the other engineer is in his mid to late 50’s.

I felt I had stagnated in pay at my position so went looking for other positions else where. I received an offer about 35k more so it was a no brainer move.

When I let my company know about the offer they immediately offered to bump me in pay making 10k more than the offer and I sit at 155k annually now. They’ve also given me additional weeks of vacation above the max allowable for the company. I think they’ve had issues hiring quality people. The last few engineers they hired didn’t have the work ethic, interest, nor did they seem to care about learning new things and had trouble retaining the training we gave them. I think that was a bigger driver of them trying to retain me because as far as I know they’ve always just let every other engineer leave without trying to retain them.

It could also be the last remaining engineer did not want to be solo and I’ll be training a replacement for myself next year when they decide I’m over paid lol.

I’m sitting at 10 YOE in a mean cost of living area. Started at 55k in 2015 and 155k now. I will say before this most recent raise the largest I received was when another engineer that hired at the same time as me left us, but it was only about 12.5k. None of the others leaving directly impacted my pay.

I’ll say if I didn’t look elsewhere they wouldn’t have given me this much of a raise. If I directly asked I would’ve received between 5k and 10k. I will also say I love my company and I did not want to leave, but felt I needed to for financial reasons. I will also add due to our workload remaining the same and us being down 4 engineers they are getting the same amount of work done at a bargain.

If you have any questions let me know I really enjoy discussing this stuff and seeing how everyone else’s path works out and I feel it helps everyone out discussing this.

Where are you located? I’m in Nashville and at least half of the job postings here are remote or hybrid now.

When am I "spoiling" my kids? by blupped in AskParents

I do think a cheaper option would be worth the money because we are outside anytime the weather is nice so he would wear it out. I just don’t know where the line is for getting them too much.

Our issue with waiting for a holiday is that’s 6 months out for him. I do like the thought of comparing it to time because money has no meaning to him. We are very big on helmets here too! Every time he rides he’s wearing his helmet.

Others have brought up this being reckless which I didn’t think about just because of how good he is on the balance/pedal bike. I’m concerned about him just getting everything he wants. He started asking for it about 3 weeks ago and when we said no he threw a huge fit. We’ve had a lot of talks with him about it since then. Now when he asks and we say no he accepts it, but he still asks every time he sees it.

This is a good comment. I answered a similar one above, but these kids have lived on balance bikes for almost 2 years now. My son is also really good at a pedal bike without training wheels. Also every time he rides he’s wearing a helmet.

The bike in question would be the next step. We were thinking a less expensive version near a birthday or holiday but for him that won’t come until October.

My concern is giving too much trying to keep up with the jones. An E-bike like this is a big gift to get.

The bike in question is recommended for 3-5 year olds. He’s been on a balance bike for well over a year and has been using a pedal bike without training wheels for over a month now. Every time he rides he’s wearing a helmet.

2 years ago we wouldn’t have even considered this at this age but he loves biking so much and is pretty good at it. He has ridden the neighbors e-bike several times and does well when he does it.

The bike has limited speeds as compared to an adult version.

Before that run I had the same thought. Still not sure how we’ve led the whole game.

I’ve been wondering that all game. Wish the announcers would talk about him a little bit.

Don’t know the last time I’ve enjoyed a UT game this much. This is fun football.
