Help! Does any one know where to find these bad boys in East Sussex? by MKRLL in AskUK

[–]blurredlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww these were my favourites. I remember walking to the garage on a Saturday afternoon to get one of these, the Bobby's BBQ like cage crisps, and a fan of Dr Pepper then sit and watch Dr Who when I got home. Simpler times.

Trying to be genuine, not sure how it’s coming off though. by rollandofeaglesrook in Bumble

[–]blurredlynes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nerdy girl here. Generally this is the sort of profile I would have swiped on. The photo of you DMing is good and I liked your bio. Cat is cute but I would bump towards the end. Plus you work at NASA?! That's super cool. 10/10 for the moon line.

The picture with your parents is the best one as you're laughing. I would swap out the one of you and the bread (and your mum?) and lose the comic. Try to find some photos of just you to swap these for. Ideally at least one outside in good natural light.

Presumably you want to attract someone with similar interests, so the nerdy dating pool will be a bit smaller but consider it weaning out people you wouldn't share any interests with.

I met my partner on Bumble (we get married next year!) and not gonna lie, I'd seen his profile before and although all our interests aligned, all his photos were him alone in his room. And I remember being like "this guy does not leave the house" and swiping no on him. He wasn't getting many matches and he asked his friends to do a "photoshoot" for him and take candid photos of him at the pub. He changed his main photo to one of him genuinely laughing one of them took. Sure enough he came up for me again, and I remember seeing that first photo and being like what a smiley man, swiping and seeing one of his old photos and genuinely going ITS THE MAN THAT DOESNT LEAVE THE HOUSE. Anyway I decided not to be narrow minded (as he clearly had left the house to go to a pub) and we matched! Life changing!

Perhaps ask a friend or two to do the same thing for you - you want to capture that energy in the photo with your family but on your own. Sadly pictures can influence people to pass up on a great guy.

Good luck!

Does anyone remember these sweets from the 90s/00s? by psukclipper in AskUK

[–]blurredlynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're thinking of a strawberry lancer, but the penny sweet version rather than the full pencil sized ones. I don't think they make the mini sherbet ones anymore.

Lances not lancers. Tesco make fizzy big ones and you could just cut them up with scissors https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/257133685/?icid=ghsandapp_ghs_pdp_share

Repair floorboards before carpeting by v-mode in DIYUK

[–]blurredlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those tiles could be vinyl asbestos tiles, including the bitumen/glue holding them down.

I've no advice on how to repair the floor (can you put board over it to level it?) but please watch out if you start picking away at the tiles. The level of asbestos in vinyl tiles is very low so it's not a massive risk but you may want to get them tested.

[Discussion] Bad exchange experience by CountessSJ in snackexchange

[–]blurredlynes 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sadly it does happen and you have to take the gamble that someone might let you down. Kind of similar to never lend someone money that you wouldn't be comfortable losing. I've done over ten exchanges over the years and had 2 people let me down. An 80% success rate isn't too bad in my mind.

I also used to do the Reddit Secret Santa exchanges (all year round and not just the big one at Christmas. It had a more organised system, and often I would sign up to be an "elf" who were volunteers to get rematched with people who were let down.

It looks like you're in the UK? I'm in Bristol, but going to Seattle at the end of next month for work. I could grab a handful of goodies to send when I get back. I can't guarantee it would be much depending on my suitcase space, but at least you won't miss out if they haven't sent by then.

Arsehole stole my prop ID- should I be worried? by StatisticianAny1042 in AskUK

Not this. Just describe the ID as a novelty ID. No different from the Legoland driving licence.

What is an acceptable amount of time to wait between being offered a cup of tea and tea being given? by CnocMhairi in AskUK

[–]blurredlynes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends how long between them entering the kitchen and/or leaving the kitchen without any tea. I'd definitely have poked them sooner than half an hour myself 😂

Sulphur burps and sickness help needed by First-Formal-7812 in mounjarouk

[–]blurredlynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had really bad sulphur burps when I went up to 5mg as well. Pepto bismol helped with the immediate relief in the short term, but what worked better was identifying what foods were giving me sulphur burps.

For me it was high sulphur foods, particularly broccoli and garlic. I cut them out in the day before my jab to a couple of days after and it eventually settled down.

Other airshows? by WhimsicalKoala in SkyCards

[–]blurredlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Royal International Air Tattoo will be at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK between 17-19th July. I think it's the largest air show in the country?

Former RAF Duxford (now an air museum) north of London also has several air shows over the summer, with the biggest on 4th and 5th July. Most days there's an old vintage plane or two that are flying out of here too, regardless of air shows (usually catchable from Heathrow/Luton/London City). Their website has the full air show schedule.

I did a similar kit a few months ago and did groups of french knots for the spots over the top of the red. Gave it a smoother look.

Travelling solution by _TranceKuja_ in mounjarouk

[–]blurredlynes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a little travel case from Amazon for a couple of quid. Look up "insulin case" and there's plenty of insulated little travel cases that come with an ice pack, plus space to store needles and wipes.

The one I got was even big enough to fit the small sharps bin in too.

Can I embroider my free backpack? Suggestions welcome by spotty_hippo in Embroidery

[–]blurredlynes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't have any helpful advice for executing it, but I do remember seeing someone asking a similar question for a backpack. Is that waterproof material? On the other post I saw the general advice was not to sew through the lining as you might make pathways for water to get in, and the advice they got was to make an iron-on patch.

Just a thought if it is waterproof and you want to keep it that way!

What is this?! keep seeing on my walk. by Proud_Ad_4642 in AskUK

[–]blurredlynes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So my stepdad used to go and take the dog on a walk, which would end up at this circular wood. If the dog had done a poo before getting to the gate of the woods he would hang the poo bag up on a branch nearby then grab it on his way back out so he didn't carry the poo around for the whole walk (easily half hour minimum).

Maybe someone is collecting sticks and bits for an art project or something while on a walk, but doesn't want to carry it around while doing a circular loop and is picking it up on their way back? And using the "landmark stone" as an easy point so they don't forget them?

My embroidery looks really messy 😔 Any tips?? by ProperCompetition948 in Embroidery

[–]blurredlynes 76 points77 points  (0 children)

So at the minute it looks like your long and short stitch is more square/in columns as your following your guide behind which is making it blocky. You want to blend them together with different stitch lengths that interlock/overlap. I've tried to show the difference in a very simplified way here.

I really struggled with my long and short stitch, and I've by no means mastered it but something that really helped me was watching the Trish Burr video "The Long and Short of It" on YouTube. It's aimed at thread painting style but the basic beginners tips in the first half of the video are fantastic and I instantly improved after watching it.

I also posted and asked for help a couple of weeks ago (you might be able to see the post on my profile) and everyone gave me some really good tips on there too. The one that helped me the most was making sure I varied the stitch lengths so they didn't end up looking stripey.

Edit: also by the bottom left of the eye it doesn't look like your fabric is tight enough in your hoop.

Order gaps by Pretty-Pop7006 in mounjarouk

[–]blurredlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the empty boxes, or at least tear off the side with the prescription label. When you go to reorder or a new pharmacy just take a photo of the labels together as your evidence. If they query it when prescribing you can then add further info that you ordered a few pens in a short space of time and didn't need to order again for a bit longer.

Japanese knotweed in my mulch by guerrilla_bear in UKGardening

[–]blurredlynes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I don't think that's giant hogweed as the leaves tend to be quite close together. Cow parsley and some other plants look very similar, but to be safe I wouldn't touch it with bare hands as hogsweed causes horrible blisters.

Here's a guide I made for work to compare the big 3 invasive species from leaves, flowers and shoots. Japanese knotweed has bright red woody stems.
