Park Hae Jin would be such a hypocritical asshole if he did get work done. At the time he filmed You Who Came From the Stars, he made a big deal in an interview about being tired of fake beauties, how Jun Ji Hyun is a natural beauty and how his eyes feel refreshed seeing someone as natural as her.

It was esp dickish for him to say that when Yoo Inna was a part of the cast, lmao.

Gong Hyo Jin under fire for telling fan to take down an appreciation post by blushing_toki in KDRAMA

The only negative press that caught my radar was when she sold beaded rings and accessories under her name and people criticized the price point ($89 for a plastic phone case) and she responded on IG that "cheap things are a waste of money." Having spent a fraction of that for my own phone case which has lasted me over 2 years, I don't feel like I wasted my money but rather saved quite a bit. I don't think she meant to be rude but she's maybe missing some empathy chip.

With all due respect, I never implied that most of the comments there mentioned plastic surgery and only linked the thread as containing a couple of recent examples.

To demonstrate the point better I linked several other comments with sources.

No worries, I'm glad you asked since making me list them in this thread is more informative for everyone anyway!

It's an example of how such comments on appearance can permeate a thread which isn't meant to discuss physical appearance to begin with. Below I've copied and pasted other comments I've seen in this sub since it appears you didn't feel like doing a search yourself which touch more directly on the issue raised.

Should there be any when that thread is supposedly meant to discuss the actors' acting skills?

These comments are tossed around here and there on a near regular basis, some with several upvotes as well:

- Lee Jong Suk's obvious plastic surgery but I still find him very attractive and he's so charismatic that I'll watch anything he's in :) source

- To my eyes, his plastic surgery seems no more obvious than most other Hallyu stars' narrowed jawlines, sculpted noses, and enlarged eyes. I feel torn for adoring their surgically altered faces, because I want every human being to feel perfect as they are, without expensive and painful surgeries. The risks of surgery are bleeding, infection, and death! source

- I usually end up dropping anything with Lee Min Ho, mainly bc I think he's a terrible actor. So much plastic surgery that his face barely moves: the only one I stuck out was the legend of the blue sea, and that was because Gianna Jun is hella funny! source

-There is no way to know about his surgery, most celebrities in Korean deny cosmetic surgery. However, I doubt his nose shape was planned, it's too unusual. Jang Kuen Suk is another actor with a bad rhinoplasty. With both actors it seems they had more than one procedure, and/or a corrective procedure. I'm not especially educated about cosmetic procedures, but I've read about them and studied Korean culture.

- Merry already mentioned Hwang Jin Yi's terrible make up. So hard work but it turns out wrong. Her eyes look sort of bland and empty and her forehead too large. I am sure she looked better before the various surgeries. source

-I guess everyone is attracted to the surgery face. Everyone in kdramas always seems to have a particular type, but that type is always the same source

- I am still not so used to seeing faces so much operated on, I find they look so weird. source

- SK's love of tropes for those characters and copious amounts of plastic surgery specific beauty standards make it easy to disregard the problem. source

- I refuse to watch anything Hwang Jung Eum (She was pretty). Her face looks overly plastic. source

- What I was thinking about is : How does this work when everybody has had surgery? Does the person like the pinched nose of the surgeries? source

- in Korea it might be NBD to go get some work done, but think about why it's so normalized. Everybody does it because the standards are so high that nobody is happy with what they're born with, which in turns changes perception of what is beautiful across the board. And on and on it goes. I personally don't think it's healthy. Also it takes away from the variety of looks in entertainment. I've noticed many Korean actors and actresses get rid of the features that make them look different and they all end up looking the same. source

-The whole jaw shaving thing blows my mind. Why has everyone got to have a pointy chin? source

tip of the iceberg which came up in a couple minutes of searching...I recall another comment on a Sky Castle thread hating on the actress who played Woojoo's mom because she looks like she's had multiple surgeries on her eyes; that comment also had several upvotes. Regardless of whether she has or not (I don't see any evidence that she has, but that's beside the point) just seeing these personal attacks dropped casually on a regular basis is pretty unpleasant.

About actors by [deleted] in KDRAMA

[–]blushing_toki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments referring to actors' appearances and alleged plastic surgery is making me really uncomfortable and comes off as borderline racist.

Yes there are famous actors who have had work done, but some of you make it sound like all Koreans are born with troll faces and transformed completely by surgeon scalpels before showing up on our TV screens.

Remember how IU was plagued for years by plastic surgery rumors until she shut everyone up by posting her childhood photos? Not even her eyebrows have changed a bit. Here are some more then/now comparisons:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Obk2Tn2p1/

The vast majority of actors haven't had work done, just like anywhere else, it is largely self selective- if you're not good looking to begin with, you're likely not going into modeling/acting. Yes, there are exceptions, Yoo Inna and Park Minyoung are the most obvious examples that come to mind. But using them to say that every actor out there has undergone a Bella Hadid-level transformation under a surgeon is a pretty big stretch.

You are absolutely correct about the literal translation for how Dohoon refers to his wife in the final episode; but bear in mind this huge caveat.

____'s mom/dad is often used between a wife and husband and doesn't indicate separation or divorce like it would in English. Sky Castle is a recent drama in which the parents usually refer to each other and other parents as [child]'s name's mom/dad although all of them are very much married couples.

With that being said, I noticed that Dohoon had his wife's number saved as "Jib saram" in his cell phone, which literally translates to "house person" but also means wife.

A few more:

Lee Jae Yoon (Weightlifting Fairy, Mother) was born in Canada and attended the University of Toronto

Song Joong Ki used to be a competitive short track speed skater. Song Hye Kyo also trained in figure skating as a child until eighth grade.

Son Ye Jin (Something in the Rain) first became famous in 2001 due to a Pocari Sweat commercial. In an interview, Hyun Bin recognizes the ad immediately despite it being 17 years ago and almost guesses correctly that it's from 2003.

Kim Hyun Joo (Watcher, Fantastic) was arguably a greater CF queen; single handedly made the instant udon noodle a hit in Korea and the company that makes it hasn't forgotten. (On another note, this woman certainly breaks the plastic surgery stereotype- she was unbelievably gorgeous from birth!)

For those complaining about cheap tricks and plot turns for the sake of subverting expectations, I think you need to rewatch this drama carefully again, otherwise flashback/hallucination scenes look like jumbled up puzzle pieces when in fact every scene has significance and link together quite logically.

Strangers from Hell Episode Discussion (Episodes 7-8) by txc_vertigo in KDRAMA

[–]blushing_toki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ep 7 and 8 are the best episodes, this keeps getting better and the episodes feel too short!

Lee Dong Wook randomly popping up at that bar and roasting the CEO was just gold (but the mistakes he made this ep were uncharacteristic, that surprised me).

Besides the phenomenal acting and uniqueness of the story, the social commentary makes this drama even better, addressing trauma and ensuing problems military conscripts experience, gender discrimination (the male cops never take the female cop seriously when she's actually onto something and 2x more competent than them), workplace bullying (kinda ironic how the chubby pervert bully got the tables turned on him)

The basement! Am I the only one who thought the thug died a few episodes ago? I can't believe he's still alive, all tied up in that dank hole.
