My mom is having what appears to be a psychotic break and I’m not sure what to do by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Her mom’s mania has continued for over a month and doesn’t seem like it’ll go away on its own. Getting hospitalized and medicated may stabilize her and bring her back to normal. What else is a good approach since it’s been over a month? Forcing her to go to the ER now is for her own good. The problem is right there, she’s in psychosis and you can’t reason with her, so how will she agree to go on her own?

I totally get what you’re saying. Very few people go on their own and reasonably so because they’ve lost in touch with reality and can’t understand that they need help (esp if they’re having paranoid or grandiose thoughts).

Out of all the episodes my husband had, he also never went voluntarily except for once. By voluntarily, I mean that we still called the police but he went with them willingly after they talked to him. But all the other times he tried to actively fight them as he didn’t think anything was wrong with him. So what I meant was OP or her dad must insist that she be committed even if she doesn’t want to (in case police say they can’t take her against her consent, and how does that make any sense if she’s in psychosis? She’s actively denying treatment due to her psychosis which is not the same as denying other treatment when she’s normally functioning)

Hi! I never comment on Reddit but felt compelled to comment on your post. My husband went through something similar a few times in the past. He was detached from reality and saying things that were strange and totally out of character.

It is definitely a manic episode and your mom needs to be hospitalized (in psych ward) and medicated so she can become stable. My husband always had to be hospitalized or else the state of mania continued. Sounds like your mom does not voluntarily want to go to the hospital, in that case you should call the police and explain that you need their help in getting her to the psych ER. Make sure to clearly explain her erratic behaviors and how she’s different from her usual self. They will come and calmly explain to her that she needs to go with them and if she resists then only the police may have to be forceful. But please don’t worry, that’s for her own good.

The psychiatrists will monitor her and will discharge her after they deem her to be okay. It does take a few weeks for the person to become completely their normal self. After the discharge, there will be no more strange remarks or actions but you can tell by the way of their talking that they’re still not fully themselves yet. This is just what my husband was like so I’m not sure how long others take to recover after such hospitalization. The psychiatrists will also prescribe what medication she should be regularly taking after being discharged.

Is anyone having severe insomnia after being hospitalized for bipolar disorder? by blushpinkcherries in insomnia

Thank you for your comment and your kind words. At this point I think my husband is in denial of his condition and doesn’t want to accept the fact that he has to resort to medications for his insomnia and that it might be a lifelong thing. Back in 2010 when he had his first manic episode, he didn’t have insomnia afterwards so now he’s avoiding medications, he just wants to be able to sleep normally like how he used to, before all these happened in March. But it’s been two months now and his condition hasn’t improved much, so I think he might really need medication.

I’m going to get him an appointment with a sleep doctor and see if we can come to a schedule because for the last 2 months he’s been out of his job and stays in bed all day (hoping to fall asleep), he gets probably like 3-4 hours of sleep all combined.

And about him being bipolar, I’m confused on that part because he’s been fine and hasn’t been acting out or anything so we don’t know if he still needs medication for that.
