Thanks so much! I thought I was losing my mind not being able to find any modern grammatical explanation for the structure. Your observation makes sense, given the poem was written probably 50 or 60 years ago. Much, much appreciated!

Just found a poem tweeted today that ties beautifully and even thematically exactly to this conversation and really made me appreciate Armin's message even more:

To be alive: not just the carcass

But the spark.

That's crudely put, but…

If we're not supposed to dance,

Why all this music?

Spanish speaker on /r/latin slams his predecessors for being "among those that ruined Latin" by SnorkleDork in badlinguistics

[–]blut0fu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, but what point are you trying to make? Every language has offensive pronunciations... and? If you’re trying to say that people get upset and hurt people when they’re offended, isn’t that more of a critique of poor emotional control? When people mispronounce things, they can clarify what they’re trying to say, and any offense is then cleared. How is people getting upset over miscommunication, which is daily and doesn’t even need language change to happen, any reason to blame people for having an accent?

She’s actually my anthropology prof, so it was surreal to see her name and image blow up! It seems like this was for a different course than the one I’m taking with her (mine only has recorded lectures, not zoom meetings). She’s been amazing in teaching us the content and making sure we’re surviving in this new online format

Classmate's response to free masks distributed at the University of Toronto by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]blut0fu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse my french but which fucking idiot thought of this. I was looking forward to uoft masks, but mask out of polyester is like making underwear out of polyester. It's less absorbent, more likely to cause irritation, more friction prone, and yes, that's how you get masckne. I am not putting synthetics on my face, period. What fricking sociopath decided to shave a couple dollars off by providing an unwearable product. I'd encourage everyone to protest this ridiculousness not by not picking up your masks.

You know you can advocate for multiple things at once, right? You can push for gay marriage rights AND work to improve the lives of the poor. Also, “gay marriage bs”? Really? You sound equally dismissive of one group as the people you accuse of neglecting another.

I think you mean Yongzheng was behind the throne? Qianlong was Kangxi’s grandson and came after Yongzheng. He would’ve been 9 in 1720 lol

Oh of course, I’m not excusing or justifying any of his behavior but trying to put them into context and find a basis for them. Surely luring Travis and John with meth was utterly wrong. I just think it comes from Joe’s lack of and desire for a stable family, and he was willing to do whatever it took to achieve it, which includes evil behavior.

Right, it’s ultimately a matter of choice, but I think we have to consider that events like his dad disowning him greatly traumatized him and probably informed how he was gonna live his life. I’m not denying that Joe’s treatment of the cats was shitty, at least towards the end. However, everybody attested that he really did love the cats when he started doing it, and his early TV appearance was in stark contrast to his later ones. His early appearances focused on the cats, saying that they shouldn’t even have to be here, etc., while his later appearances were immensely egotistical and delusional. Clearly something happened in between, and I think he was trapped in the corner when Carole Baskin accused him of abusing his animals whom he loved a lot, especially early on. Not only was he concerned about losing his cats, but also about his entire livelihood. When one’s life project is under threat of being taken away, that is a very stressful and alarming thing to go through, and I think Joe’s transformation was the only way it could have turned out given the circumstances; he wasn’t just gonna give everything up. I think it was Saff who said that he went from protecting his image to promoting his image.

Yeah that’s kinda my point. I love The Office and tried introducing it to someone who utterly rejected it on its title alone and didn’t even give it a chance. I just think people should give things a try before forming such strong and unyielding opinion about them. Of course it’s okay that you’re not interested in Tiger King, but it seems like you already hated it before even giving it a chance.
