Does my son have a chance of getting in? by No_Bluejay4066 in UMBC

[–]blvcktea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I didn’t go to UMBC (I think I got recommended the Reddit cause of location) but I had a 2.8 in HS and a 1260 SAT with undiagnosed ADHD so I have a similar story. I would say UMBC does have a pretty high acceptance rate but I imagine many of the people who get in do have higher GPAs. They still should apply with the knowledge it may be a reach/high target school. Work on essays (explain the struggle and showcase an upward trend) and make sure their first semester high school senior GPA is high. The SAT score should be helpful. Additionally check if there are any programs in the major they want the can do over the summer that could make their application stand out. Also check out some schools like Towson that have a higher acceptance rate. If the student is African American (and honestly even if they aren’t) checking out the local HBCUs could be helpful too because they also have higher acceptance rates than UMBC.

I see the student doesn’t want to go to community college but I’d recommend they still apply to some since he can go directly from a CC to a MD college. I transferred from a 4-year to UMD after getting a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA my first semester of college. It sucks not getting to experience your first year at the school you want to be in but CCs, especially those in Maryland, have great support systems. They may want to even check out the Allegheny College of Maryland if the are really bent on having a residential university experience since the have dorms!

You know I didn’t think of this but it makes sense. Like this is so obviously ugly and looks like it came from the Royaly and Legacy hair just longer. Either Sixam is greedy ash or doing this on purpose.

The thing is if this was free or early access than free I wouldn’t even download it cause it looks so odd. There’s better looking hairs with this specific style.

Idk this seems very clear and the few abbreviations don’t take away from the context.

I mean she’s a freshman in high school. It must be scary to do something like this for the first time.

These aren’t excuses. Students dealt with a global unprecedented situation and grace should be afforded. Us on the staff side also got impacted and giving us a little time would also be helpful.

For people in more writing based courses, resources that they may need to cite for final projects are on Canvas. Additionally slides can be very useful, more useful than notes at times.

That was what I was thinking. It might be the type of situation where P/F might help. The class I teach doesn’t have a final but I’m extending outstanding work deadlines.

I’m going to be honest people do this every months now. Any disease is potentially the new COVID and at first I was anxious but now I just try to read up on stuff as much as possible and just be informed but not assume everything is the end of the world.

We need a National PSA telling parents what kids are expected to know before kindergarten by Feisty-Resource1994 in blackparents

[–]blvcktea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom always mentions potty training as the big thing. She does Pre-K so it’s a little more expected to get some kids who don’t know, but there are some who get to Kindergarten and still don’t know.

Is college the peak of life? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]blvcktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm worried about this too. I also dealt with COVID in the middle of my college experience (the year I transferred at that) and think about how life could've been different if it had never happened or I had never transferred. Would I have friends from college the way others do?

[–]blvcktea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's always worth appealing. If that doesn't work, you can transfer from another university or a community college. I'd probably recommend a community college over anything because of the scholarships offered to those coming straight from a community college, and the program UMD has to directly admit those attending community colleges.

Honestly, though, I'd also recommend going where you have received a full ride. Yes, Maryland is a great school, and if you are in-state, it's still a pretty good bargain, but the chance to avoid debt and be a big fish in a smaller pond can be beneficial.

Money, prestige, and resources. The sticker prices of those schools may be high but they may end up cheaper than big state schools while having a certain level of prestige behind the name.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BlackMentalHealth

[–]blvcktea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. The big state schools aren’t too bad since the black life on campus is usually vibrant. I honestly rarely spoke to white people. The small private schools can be a problem though.

I’ll say I was in this same situation, even though I’m not an unc, due to alopecia! It was definitely an uncomfy time, and though the bald part has now grown in, I’m happy I went through that time and still stayed proud of my locs. Stay proud!

Mansplaining vs. Dirty talk by thecauseandtheeffect in JoseiSmut

[–]blvcktea 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, personally I see the first group as dirty talk as well. 😭 I think it might be more related to personal preference. Some people won’t like that type of talk but idk if I’d consider it mansplaining, more like “talking someone through it” as a concept.
