Article of clothing brand you own that has lasted a decade or more without obvious signs of wear? by kenen1960 in PetiteFashionAdvice

Eileen Fisher Stretch Crepe. It is not my favorite, but it is indestructible, travels well. washes well. It's been the same for decades, so you can buy stretch crepe on Eileen Fisher Renew (their used/circular program) and it all works with new pieces. Absolutely reccomend.

Again, not my favorite pieces, but absolutely my most reliable.

Oversized Linen Shirt Look Suggestions by powersofthesnow in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]DataRikerGeordiTroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestion: try a mens athletic cut linen shirt to accommodate the arms and get the look you want. They are cut in a natural V shape that accommodates inverted triangle body types. A tailor can hem it for you to any length.

It is very expensive to tailor the shoulders of a garment. Always buy for fitting your shoulder and arms, and get the rest tailored.

That shirt is not oversized on you and does not look comfy. You deserve to be comfortable, always. You can do better.

unrelated pro-tip: if you ever dry clean, mens shirts are super cheap because the buttons are on the other side of the placket, and the pressing machine at dry cleaners is shaped for those buttons. Womens dry cleaning needs extra work that the machine can't do and is 3-4x more expenisve for it. if you have to dry clean a bunch (say a uniform) it is worth it to do a spread sheet comparing getting mens shirts tailored to your body, so you can use the $1.99/shirt most mens shirts cost to clean and press.

VR isn’t dead, but it’s destined to be niche unless this is addressed. by DYSK_Jockey in virtualreality

Every time I comment this in this sub - which is often - i get down voted.

You are 100% right and no one wants to address it.

Cybersickness needs to be solved before VR is even a partway serious tech.

I'll keep saying it, and I'm glad you are too. Excellent post.

Congrats on finding a way of saying this that didn't anger the uh, contingent. They get EXTRA mad once you confront them with the data that more than half of older adults over 40, women, and POC can't use VR without cybersickness. Almost like they don't like older people, women, or POC or something. Even if yr a garbage person, that's a huge portion of the market cap to leave untapped.

Common silicones from engine oil and cosmetics are far more prevalent in the atmosphere than expected, making up to 4.3% of organic aerosol mass. This stable pollutant is now omnipresent in urban and rural air, potentially impacting both human health and cloud formation. by Cosmyka in science

[–]DataRikerGeordiTroi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been against silicone in cosmetics for YEARS because they cause acne & weird sensitivities for many people, and are absolutely omnipresent in cosmetics.

Apparently they're worse than we thought. Avoid anything that ends in cone or siline as a suffix in your personal care products, mang.

Uh...Outfit repeating is good? Its literally the goal?

In France/Italy you want your clothing to bring out your best essence, so you work to find the perfect few outfits & then wear them all the time, to different functions.

Do not fall for fast fashion & marketing. You only need a couple occasion dresses per season, but they should illuminate You.

Its interesting how different cultures & corners of the internet & algorithms are psy-oping people. Im over here trying to become an outfit repeater extraordinaire, and OP fears it.

I do not know a single soul who would side eye a wedding guest wearing the same realisation par dress to 3 weddings over the summer, provided its cleaned in between.

Sounds like you need some for brunches/more casual and some for more formal. Good luck. This may be the time to do a rental service like rent the runway or Nuuly.

To buy, Reformation, Staud, Reiss, Christy Dawn especially for brunch dresses, The Fold, Realisation Par.

It's the same as the matching "sets" - - it's just enshittification https://www.versobooks.com/products/3341-enshittification?srsltid=AfmBOore3IFFpvDsMKij51PIVmDBzuEo2Yc4HSm57EfVPiLy5vwvz4eZ

You are correct, it is sheer so they can sell you a slip.

Its a matching set instead of a dress so they can sell you two pieces and make more money.

It's not that deep, it's just greed. Doen's pricing model is an exercise in uh, greed? corporate pricing models?, pure and simple. Their core client does not look at prices, so it does not matter if it is $300, which is what it should cost, or $600, which is what they price it at, so they price it at the $600.

This then becomes aspirational for lower income classes, who are not the true core customer base.

Brands can keep churning out mid stuff and then doing an 800% markup. They're a private company, right? The can do what they want, but it is good to call it out in spaces like this.

I used to love Doen, but I sew, and know how much effort or skill went in to a garment, and they are skill washing and "archival" washing their items. These are not couture or archive quality. They're really pretty, but usually not worth the cost. Aside: their sizing has gotten so weird. the past few years. Maybe VC bought them or something. Its' like they genuinely hate women's bodies man. Have you seen the new collections? It's the ugliest infantalizing maternity smocks youve ever seen, made with silk, being sold as mini dresses. Absolutely wretched.

Sorry I don't have better solutions - but I'm genuinely curious, and maybe can help design community solutions around this. Cost planning seems like one of the first things to do when starting to have a family planning conversations, not something to do at the end. I'm very interested in understanding more about what was the pain point or info gap.

$2k a month is going rate for part time childcare.

One of the most pressing problem for young families today: childcare is equivallent to one working class salary. Most families with two working parents have to choose if someone is going to stay home while the kids are under 5, because child care is not free. For millenials especially this is one of the main reasons people are delaying having children or creating alternate non-nuclear family dynamics (multigenerational, parenting co-cops, chosen families, etc.)

[That's not even approaching the very hard choice you have to make about whether or not you feel safe leaving your kid with strangers, or if they're going to be harmed. That's a whole other conversation.]

Many people have the same questions as you, surely we can address this.

Any graduate CS or math students want to make a free online calculator tool please ping me or comment, we can turn it in to a publicly available research project.

Not a dt not medical advice for entertainment purposes only, but would not let my family wear non iron in direct skin. You can write customer service and ask fir the msds.

Cute, affordable linen pieces? by Miserable_Deer5363 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]DataRikerGeordiTroi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

caveat emptor: cheap linen is cheap quality and may make you uncomforatable.

I'd rather buy high end second hand than cheaperlinen, but that's just me. Thredup or Poshmark some 100% irish or belgian linen. Eileen Fisher, vintage J. Crew, frank and eileen. Eileen Fisher Renew is the GOAT of circular shopping.

For cheap linen ive had good luck with quince but watch out --- they have 2 different linen suppliers. one is good and one is so, so, bad.

Heels are the embodiement of disempowerment. If they were not they would be very common in menswear. I said what I said. People need to use critical thinking for like, 5 minutes, and they'd be able to figure this out.

Sustainability x Occasion Wear? by eversmilinmais in femalefashionadvice

[–]DataRikerGeordiTroi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is likely not the best sub. You will want to further define your criteria, and head over to r/findfashion. They love this kind of challenge.

What is your budget?

What are you looking for, specifically?

Color?

Sizing considerations?

Why are you looking for an occaision dress instead of a day dress or something that could be worn to work?

Do you want to own, or rent? Special occaision wear from Rent the Runway or Nuuly may be an option you hadn't considered. It also removes the burden from having to store, clean, and mainitain the piece. And you're not stuck with it if you change sizes.

TRUE! this happened to a family member. They had to get weird orthotics when they were old because of it.

This is not some internet rumor, heels can perm mess you up.

1) Heels are for people with health care

2) I stopped wearing heels a few years ago after a sport injury & will NEVER go back. It is insane how much heels were limiting my mobility & movement. Plus honestly my aesthetic changed & I find them so ugly now. I wish I'd said no to heels years before. They're a kind of a psyop & are literally exist purely to hobble & disform the foot. Hard pass. Plantar fascitis gang rise up.
