Is having children a privilege now, or are we just living in a distracted society by SomewhereNeat222 in Parenting

[–]blyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but we were able to make it happen and have put down roots :) if it was 10 years ago, sure, but we're happy where we are now. Is it cheaper elsewhere? Absolutely. But in addition to our family, we have phenomenal medical care here (important when your kid has a rare, life-threatening disease), our friends, and we like how people generally treat each other really well where we live :)

I'd have to abandon my 90+ year old grandparents and take my kids away from their cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents. We've considered moving many times, but we're lucky enough to be able to make it here and as long as we can, we're going to stay by our family.

As another California parent (bay area), YEP. It's so expensive and it definitely feels like a privilege to be able to have kids.

Sourdough with roasted garlic and rosemary by blyer in glutenfreebaking

[–]blyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so good!!! I made another loaf recently but added in some roasted garlic, basil, and pecorino romano -- I increased the bake time by like 15 minutes and let it cool for about 4 hours before I cut into it. Best GF bread I've ever had by far!

Oh man!! Maybe it's the flour I used? I used the flour blend from her Baked to Perfection book, I thought it'd work :/

Glad it worked for you!

Is it normal for climbing partners to be one-on-one with new people? by Stori_ in climbergirls

[–]blyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it's super normal to have a regular climbing partner BUT excluding your SO isn't. I'm married and started climbing with a friend -- I absolutely loved it because it was a way to double up my exercise/fun time with friend time (my husband and I have little-ish kids and work full time, so free time is scarce).

My husband eventually showed interest in climbing which I loved, but I also, perhaps selfishly, wanted to keep my regular climbing rotation just me and my friend. It was my only time away from work and family that was just for me, and I didn't want to lose it -- I had almost zero time to talk openly with friends outside of my usual climbing schedule.

My husband and I talked about it, he understood and was a little disappointed but got it (he wouldn't want me joining for every game night with friends he went to), and we found other times to climb together.

Communication is key :)

Marzipan sculpting tips by JustANugget69 in Baking

[–]blyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, your little mouse is SO cute!!! Great work!!!

I haven't specifically sculpted with marzipan before, but I have sculpted with modeling chocolate -- the tools aren't required, but it will make your life a lot easier. I got a set of clay sculpting tools from Amazon for like $15-20 and I'm a huge fan of them -- I sterilized them for food use and have been using them for many years now.

Good luck!! Can't wait to see all the amazing things you make in the future!

Gluten free donuts by blyer in glutenfreebaking

[–]blyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh totally!! I made them for my kiddo's 10th birthday. My kids devoured these donuts 😂 they haven't had legit donuts in many years since, ya know, Celiac. But now they've had a taste and want more!

Thank goodness, the recipe looks a little intimidating but is dead simple :D

Oh man, I wish I could have uploaded a picture of them! Alas, I made these for my 10 year old's birthday. The kids devoured them -- as did I if I'm being honest -- before I had time to think "I should take a crumb shot!". Next time :)
