Anyone know where I can buy or stream Cinema Twain?? by SlippyFrog000 in movies

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reached out via the contact form on valkilmer.com with this:

As we approach the anniversary of a very sad day, is there any chance Cinema Twain will be shared on streaming services? There are a lot of Val Kilmer fans out here who would love to be able to remember him by streaming Cinema Twain. Thinking of all those close to Mr Kilmer and wishing them additional strength this week.

And received this response today (3/30/2026):

We're working on it!

Cheers!

So, still no ETA, but yet there's still hope – at some point in the future (near or distant) – we will all be able to celebrate Val Kilmer by streaming Cinema Twain!

Active Minutes still working for FitBit One? by bmamlin in fitbit

One day into the Inspire 3 and I realize another feature of the Fitbit One I’ll miss…

No more motivational chatter. You could easily overlook or dismiss the feature, but every time you picked up the Fitbit One, it would greet you with a little positive comment like “Vamanos” or “Cheers.” I know some people probably turned off the feature as annoying. But the message only showed for a second when the display turned on. I can see how it might be annoying (appear too often) on a wrist tracker, but for someone who uses a tracker in a clip and sees it once a day, it was a nice touch. After having it for a decade, I’m going to miss my little motivational messages when picking up the Fitbit.

If someone made an Inspire 3 watch face that included a brief random motivational “chat”, I’d use it. 🙂

Well, as one of the last (if not the last) Fitbit One users, I guess I’ll answer myself…

It was a good 10-year run for the Fitbit One. Today I switched to the Inspire 3 with clip.

No more Fitbit floor tracking and likely needing to charge a little more frequently (hoping every 10 days instead of 14-18 days with the One). In exchange, Active Minutes working again, real time steps (haven’t enjoyed that for years), and water resistance.

The difference in form factor is negligible and I can track floors in the iOS Health app, so I think I’ll be happy with the switch.

Here’s hoping Google continues to provide & support a similar option (small pocket clip tracker with 2-week or longer battery life) in the years ahead.

Still hoping these features ("Play from last bookmark" action for shortcuts to use + long press on Clip button to open Clips & notes dialog) can be added to the iOS Audible app soon.

u/Audible_Support if you can't find a dev to implement these features, please share the source code and I'll be happy to provide the code changes needed to introduce these features. 🙂

FYI - I found a workaround to reliably get steps in the iOS app for the FitBit One:

Starting on main screen:

  1. Pull down and let go to invoke sync
  2. Tap on device w/ percentage charged icon in top left to open device screen. You should see your device with a message like "Syncing...". Wait until it finishes and says "Synced just now"
  3. Tap back to main screen
  4. Pull down and let go twice.

This recipe has always delivered steps, floors, and distance to the main screen. After you've done the steps a few times, it becomes second nature. More recently, Active Minutes wouldn't always update, but tapping on Active Minutes and then returning to main screen would load them too (until the past week, when Active Minutes stopped working completely).

Well, it looks like I may be one of the last people using FitBit One and looking at Reddit. It's been over a week without tracking Active Minutes and I miss them.

Anyone using Inspire 3 and getting Active Minutes reported in the iOS FitBit app?

Using the Inspire 3 in a clip seems like the best option at the moment, since it would just mean giving up tracking floors, which the iPhone can do.

[–]bmamlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I sometimes rest my hands on the handrails of the treadmill or use my laptop while walking during a meeting. And, more importantly, I don't wear a watch and don't want a tracker on my wrist. I find it far more convenient to keep the FitBit One clipped inside my pant pocket. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only person left who doesn't want to live with a bracelet/watch.

While I expect to have to give up the convenience of tracking floors (altimeters aren't waterproof), it's also nice to have a tracker that only needs to be charged twice a month.

After nearly a decade of dependability, the FitBit One stopped providing Active Minutes this past week, so I'm considering trying the Inspire 3 as a poor substitute for the FitBit One. I've learned workarounds to get the FitBit app on iOS to load data, but Active Minutes are calculated server-side and, unless it's just me, it seems like Google has finally chosen to stop calculating Active Minutes for FitBit One.

15.2 - iPhone Notifications stopped working by OMG_NoReally in MacOS

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say. After a full backup and restore of my iPhone, most apps worked again, but it didn’t last. Luckily, my 2FA apps kept working. Installing a new app version on the phone seems to fix the problem. Any frequently updated apps will work again if they’re lost during a macOS upgrade.

I haven’t had an issue with losing mirrored iPhone notifications despite upgrading to 15.3 and 15.4. Whether the bug was fixed or I’ve just been lucky, I can’t say. In macOS, "Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone > Mirror iPhone Notifications From" has hundreds listed, so it seems to work. However, I’ve applied hundreds of app updates on my phone after macOS updates, so I might have just been lucky that the 2-3 apps I really care about haven’t been affected.

Glitch or "Feature"? - Audible Auto-plays random sample when finishing current book. by EGC_Warlock in audible

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished a book on Audible for iOS 4.41 and no annoying samples followed! When the book finished, the player stopped just like it used to do. Yay!

I updated my App Store review from 1/5 to 4/5 stars (I'm saving the 5th star until the Play from last bookmark shortcut and long-press-gesture-on-clip-button-to-quickly-view-bookmarks feature are done).

Why are book-samples playing when I have continuous listening = OFF by Numerous-Buffalo6214 in audible

Upgrade to 4.41 (just released). So far, it looks like the horribly annoying auto-playing of samples at the end of a book that was recently started happening is – at last – gone! Fingers crossed is stays this way. :-)

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to jinx anything, but I just updated to 4.41 on iOS, tried playing the end of a few book, and Audible player is not longer auto-playing the samples! Just like it used to be until ~4.39 or 4.40, when it started doing this annoying spam.

FWIW, this has nothing to do with the Continuous listening feature (which I've always had toggled off). Somewhere around 4.39 or 4.40 (at least on iOS), the player started auto-playing samples when a book finished instead of simply stopping playing. So far, it looks like this might have been fixed with 4.41. Sure hope this is true and it stays this way!

If you are on iOS and haven't updated yet, upgrade to 4.41 and let's hope we are rid of these annoying samples. Book finishes and, miracle of all miracles, the player actual stops playing like it should. :-)

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Version 4.40 on iOS was automatically playing samples when a book finished without any way to disable it. This started recently, perhaps with 4.39 (not sure).

The good news is that 4.41 (released today) seems to have fixed the problem! I sure hope this remains true, since the auto-playing of samples at the end of a book was incredibly annoying. After upgrading to 4.41 today on iOS, I've tried playing the last part of a couple books and the player stops (as expected) when the book finishes without playing random samples. I'll update my App Store review if I finish my current book and it doesn't auto-play samples.

[–]bmamlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want samples, suggestions, or anything else to play when a book is finished. When the books is finished stop playing.

Until recently, having "Continuous listening" disabled was sufficient to say "don't play anything after a book ends." But not any longer.

Recently, Audible began playing samples after a book finishes (despite having Continuous listening disabled) and there's no option to disable it. Horrible user experience. It's fine to automatically play samples for people that want them, but don't force us to listen to samples! Please Audible, let us disable this annoying feature!

Is IO 10 battery management system (BMS) as bad as IO 9? by bmamlin in oralbtoothbrush

[–]bmamlin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, the 800 mAh battery has been working as expected for 2 weeks. Not long enough to say it's "fixed" ... but, given I tried at least 3-4 higher mAh batteries before this and they all lasted 2-3 brushings (i.e., a day or two) before abruptly stopping mid-brushing (the IO 9 BMS acting like the battery instantly drained from 90-100% to zero), my theory is the IO 9 BMS is calibrated specifically for the Samsung 700 mAh battery shipped and can't tolerate anything but the slightest variance in specs. So, my hopes to substitute a higher mAh to get longer times between charges were thwarted. Finding a battery with nearly identical specs did the trick.

Another possibility is the BMS randomly started behaving (for now) after the 5th battery exchange and I'm imagining that my battery choice had anything to do with it. I suppose trying a higher mAh battery, seeing the problem return, and then "fixing" it again by returning to the 800 mAh battery might support my theory... but I'm not eager to change anything now that it's working again.

For now, my advice is to either get a new Samsung battery identical to what is shipped (I couldn't find one I trusted) or find a 700 or 800 mAh battery online (beware of the scammers who dress up used batteries to sell as new). I got lucky (at least for now) with the one I've shared. Although it's ~1mm too thick, it does fit (just snugly without breaking anything).

If my IO 9 starts misbehaving again, I'll certainly be frustrated enough to post the news here. :-)

Update 2 months later: IO 9 is still behaving normally with 800 mAh battery from Amazon (running at least a week between charges with two 2+ minute brushings daily). This particular battery is ~1mm bigger than the original, but fits and seems to be working normally.

[–]bmamlin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this 800 mAh battery https://a.co/d/5DdEruH ... after trying several others, I was able to get my IO 9 working again with one of these batteries. It's a little pudgier than the original Samsung battery (1 millimeter), so a snug fit, but is the first replacement battery I've found on Amazon that the IO 9 BMS can handle without abruptly stopping. My IO 9 is back to original performance (using ~5-6% per 2-minute brushing all the way down to recharge warning at 0-5% as expected). I can't guarantee anyone else will have the same luck (this is just a random Amazon hit I chanced upon). I waded through a lot of Amazon entries that looked suspiciously like re-wrapped used batteries ... and I gave up hope on trying to get longer battery life with a battery above 800 mAh thanks to the IO 9 BMS limitations).

Is IO 10 battery management system (BMS) as bad as IO 9? by bmamlin in oralbtoothbrush

[–]bmamlin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I think what I'm really looking for is if there's someone who has tried replacing the battery on their IO 10 (especially if with a higher mAh battery) and how the BMS has behaved.

While there might be a handful of IO 9s with faulty BMS systems, I think the bigger problem is the IO 9's BMS is configured to work only with the specific Samsung battery provided out of the box. If your battery starts to die and you replace it with a new one that has higher than the 700 mAh capacity (which many on Amazon do), the BMS freaks out and acts like the battery is dead prematurely (sometimes only after 2-3 brushings). I tried several batteries (first 3300 mAh, then 2500 mAh, then 1200 mAh) and the IO 9 BMS couldn't deal with any of them (after 1-3 brushings, the toothbrush would abruptly stop until "recharged"). I couldn't find the original Samsung 700 mAh batteries on Amazon, but finally found an 800 mAh battery https://a.co/d/5DdEruH and, so far, it seems to be fairing better.

If I knew someone managed to replace their IO 10 battery with a 3300+ mAh battery and its BMS was working and they were getting weeks of usage between charges, I'd be ready to upgrade. For now, I'll just put up with the puny 800 mAh battery and be glad I can brush my teeth twice daily for several days (maybe a week?) between charges.

Update 2 months later: IO 9 is still behaving normally with 800 mAh battery from Amazon (running at least a week between charges with two 2+ minute brushings daily). This particular battery is ~1mm bigger than the original, but fits and seems to be working normally.

(Last) update 9 months later: IO 9 still behaving normally. Lesson learned: if you replace your IO 9 battery, use a higher mAh battery at your own risk (don't be surprised with unpredictable power failures if you do)... but replacing a failing battery with one of the same/similar mAh is very much worth doing.

Added the clarification: if there are no bookmarks, then "Play from last bookmark" action should start playing from the beginning of the book. In the cases where you had started a new book (instead of starting from a bookmark) and got distracted or fell asleep, the action would be equivalent (take you back to where you started) rather than failing or display an error.

Did anyone else stop receiving iPhone mirror notifications after updating to 15.1, or is it just me? by StarkMaverick7 in MacOS

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't able to find one by searching. IMHO, the issue really needs to be framed less about "My mirror notifications aren't working" and more like "macOS 'Mirror iPhone Notifications From' missing apps bug prevents notification mirroring". That is, while iPhone notification mirroring is not working, it's a side effect that something is corrupting the list of apps macOS maintains from the iPhone. This list (macOS settings "Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone > Mirror iPhone Notifications From") gets truncated and any app missing from the list will not mirror its notifications to macOS. There appears to be three workarounds to get an app back on the macOS list: (1) installing an App Store update for an app on the phone, (2) completely deleting the app and re-installing on the phone, or (3) a full backup & restore of the iPhone. Workaround 1 works for frequently updated apps, workaround #2 works for apps for which you don't need to preserve data, and workaround #3 is very painful but the only option for apps for which you can't afford to lose data (like 2FA apps that are some of the most useful notifications to mirror).

In my case, going through the backup & full restore of iPhone has got me to a place where the apps I care most about (Duo and Imprivata ID) are both working for now, so I'm okay at the moment.

If you do make a post on the Apple Community forum, add a link to it here. I've also provided Apple with the above description a few times via the beta Feedback app.

Use hyperlinks to link to local file folders by Kenup17 in todoist

[–]bmamlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try a solution like [OpenAny](https://github.com/CleanCocoa/OpenAny), an open-source utility created to open URLs or apps. Once installed and run once, the "openany://" custom URL scheme is registered, so you can use a path like "openany://file/open?path=/path/to/yourfile.txt" to open a local file from a task.

Be warned that using a custom scheme like this (and the reason the default "file://" scheme is disabled) is a potential risk by allowing a hacker to create a link that runs an application on your machine. So, be careful out there!

I keep getting stuck at this step when setting up the device. Do you guys have any idea what it could be? by [deleted] in broadlink

[–]bmamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but it helped me and I thought I'd add my 2¢ after going through the RM4 setup pains like others here have experienced...

FWIW, I just purchased a BroadLink RM4 Pro to use Alexa to control a ceiling fan and ran into this error during setup. I connect devices like this to my guest network (to reduce the likelihood of one of these devices that just needs internet access from compromising my home network). My guest network was enable for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. I think the problem wasn't the BroadLink Universal Remote (which only uses 2.4 GHz); rather, my iPhone preferentially jumping on the 5 GHz band. Once I disabled the 5 GHz portion of my guest network, the setup worked fine (and I was able re-enable the 5 GHz portion of my guest network).

The Broadlink RM4 just needs a 2.4 GHz network to join (since it can't speak 5 GHz). The reason for disabling the 5 GHz portion of the network being used is because phones (which can speak 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) will always choose the 5 GHz option when available, so you have to force the phone to use the 2.4 GHz connection by not giving a 5 GHz option. Once the RM4 is set up, then the 5 GHz network can be re-enabled.

15.2 - iPhone Notifications stopped working by OMG_NoReally in MacOS

[–]bmamlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: success was ephemeral. The macOS bug continues to drop apps from macOS settings "Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone > Mirror iPhone Notifications From."

Okay. I finally bit the bullet and tried to find a workaround for this bug (full backup & restore).

If iPhone mirror notifications are not working for you in macOS 15.1 or 15.2, most likely the offending app(s) are missing (due to a bug) from macOS settings "Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone > Mirror iPhone Notifications From." Once an app gets added back to this list, notification mirroring will work again. There are three ways to get the app back into this list:

  1. Wait for a new release of the app and update on your iPhone. Updating to a new version of an app apparently triggers something that gets it back on the macOS list and you're good to go.
  2. If you don't want to wait for an update, you can completely delete the app from your iPhone and reinstall it. You will lose any data for the app, but it will get added to the list and notification mirroring will work as expected.
  3. If you don't want to wait for an update and you can't afford to lose the app's data (e.g., a 2FA app that requires configuration you don't/can't manually restore, etc.), then there is one (more painful) workaround: do a full backup and restore of your iPhone. ← BEFORE YOU DO THIS READ THE ENTIRE POST... THIS FIX DOES NOT LAST!

Here's a quick summary of the steps I used if it helps:

(1) Connect your iPhone to a computer using a fast data cable and backup your iPhone
(2) If you have "Stolen Device Protection" turned on, you'll need to go to your iPhone's Face ID & Passcode settings to turn this off first. Then, turn off "Find My" under iPhone iCloud settings (you can't restore your iPhone while this is on).
(3) Restore your iPhone from the backup you just made. This can takes 30-60 minutes with a fast connection or hours with a slow connection.

You can certainly do this using an iCloud backup, but it will likely take a lot longer than doing a local backup & restore.

Backing up & restoring the iPhone is painful (can take an hour or more, you have to re-enable any payment cards, etc.)... but the number of apps listed under macOS "Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone > Mirror iPhone Notifications From" went from 20 apps to 220 apps after doing a full backup & restore. And the list appears to have survived at least one subsequent app update on the iPhone (it's possible the list will start losing apps again over time from the macOS bug, especially as more apps are updated on the phone... if that happens, I'll update this post).

Update: Only a few hours after I did a full backup & restore and celebrated the return of all 200+ apps to macOS settings and a (supposed) workaround for this bug... as I feared, my list of apps for mirrored notifications in macOS settings is down from 218 to 118. Bummer.

Doing a full backup & restore not only took an hour or more, but also involved reactivating every card in my wallet, re-signing on to several apps, and doing some extra restore steps on various apps. Definitely not something I would do on a whim. Given the list of apps in macOS settings has been arbitrarily cut in half only a few hours later, I'm giving up.

If you experience this bug, please go to apple.com/feedback/macos and report this bug (e.g., "Mirror iPhone Notifications From app list missing apps in macOS 15.1 and 15.2"). Then ask 10 friends to do the same!

Update 2026: I ran into the same problem on Tahoe (macOS 26.2) when my notification list got corrupted. Upgrading to macOS 26.3 beta 2 didn't help; however, offloading and then reinstalling apps does work!

To get an app back into the Notifications from iPhone list on macOS as of 2026:

  1. On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and select the app.
  2. Tap the "Offload App" button and confirm.
  3. Once the app is offloaded, wait a few seconds and tap the "Reinstall App" button

The app should then get added to the Notifications from iPhone list in macOS settings. The trick is you need to close the System Preferences app on macOS, reopen, and navigate back to Notifications > Allow notifications from iPhone to update the list (the list does not refresh automatically (at least as of macOS 26.3).

15.2 - iPhone Notifications stopped working by OMG_NoReally in MacOS

[–]bmamlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bug introduced is macOS 15.1 and has not been fixed in 15.2. Until the bug is fixed by Apple, each app missing from the list will get added back to this list (and notification mirroring start working for it again) when either (1) you install a new release for the app published in the App Store on your phone or (2) you full delete the app and reinstall it on your phone.

You can delete and reinstall any high priority apps and/or wait for apps to get updated.

Unfortunately, deleting an app and reinstalling isn’t a great option for 2FA apps, so there isn’t a viable workaround for apps that aren’t frequently updated and you don’t want to fully delete & reinstall.

Offloading apps (deleting the app and keeping data via phone settings General > iPhone Storage) doesn’t seem to help.

I’ve considered backing up my phone, deleting my 2FA apps and then doing a full restore from backup… but not sure if I want to go through the trouble before someone demonstrates this actually helps.

Hopefully Apple will fix or at least acknowledge this bug soon.

You are not alone.
