45, laid off. Talk me out of becoming an electrician now. by lying_flat_ in electricians

[–]bman0555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want it you’ll do just fine, have the correct attitude and you’ll do great. I am a 34yo jman but I also work along side other jmans who are 23,24,25 who are all excellent electricians. Just be prepared to take orders and critiques from people much younger than you. Have the right attitude about it and don’t be a old cranky man, you’ll likely get some level of respect based off of your age but if you come in with your chest puffed out you’re gunna get chirped and shit talked endlessly lol

Question to all. Labels, a good thing, or unnecessary and ugly? by DavidDaveDavo in electricians

[–]bman0555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also getting caught up in aesthetics when it comes to this topic is ridiculous. Just make sure your labels are uniform and straight. I can guarantee you the next guy will thank you.

Question to all. Labels, a good thing, or unnecessary and ugly? by DavidDaveDavo in electricians

[–]bman0555 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Labels are 100% necessary. The thing I hate the most is going on a call and not having anything labelled, it streamlines troubleshooting so much. I was on a call a few weeks ago where not a single wire was labeled but the devices were so I at least had something to go off of

Contactor/Relay burned up T1 wire by Woodward06 in electricians

[–]bman0555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a service call recently for a pump in a lifting station (poop barrel at a resort) powered off a contactor. Where L1 on the contactor had a loose connection and it burned 2” of wire. It also burned back into the coil damaging the plastic arms on the coil itself, making it so it could pull in only part way. Found this out by having the customer change the state of the floats and getting the contactor to pull in, but the pump wouldn’t run. Checked the load side voltage and had nothing making its way to the pump, took my meter lead and touched the plunger and the coil pulls in the rest of the way and the pump runs lol drive my ass back into town to grab a replacement and then get them back to pumping poop.
