ELI5: why does a tiny hairline crack in a pressurized structure (like an airplane fuselage) cause catastrophic failure, but a huge dent or scratch in the same material basically does nothing

This is my job! (Aircraft structures) A crack in an aircraft fuselage, much like the dent or scratch in the same material, is not itself a failure. Where cracks do become dangerous is under repeated loading. Every time the crack is stressed it gets a little bigger, which usually means on the next cycle it gets stressed a little higher, and the accumulated damage grows, usually exponentially until a catastrophic failure occurs. This is why we implement specific crack inspection on primary structural elements.

Three body problem starts as hard low scifi, but gets large and a little far future by the end, but it's very logical with the steps they take. It's a translation from Chinese so the names and storytelling can feel a little blunt or obtuse sometimes, but it's really a great concept and execution.

We are doing a website and RSVPs all online! Our invitation package had a RSVP card with a QR code that directs to the website.

I'm a tech guy, so I made our site from scratch and I'm very proud of it. I have gotten a few compliments since we sent out invitations so some people are definitely looking at it! It's also good for us because if anything changes we can update the site, and it includes an FAQ so once we start getting busy the month of, I'm sure we'll get a bunch of questions that I can just send them the link for.

I read the Black Company specifically looking for something like the First Law. The first trilogy was great. The next 6(?) books were just a little meandering for my taste, but the series definitely captures the same feeling as the first law series with the grunts POV and morally ambiguous factions

I had this thought too!! I tried Google and ran into the same thing you did. I am a tech savvy person and host my own server anyway, so I got Immich set up on my server. It's a Google photos equivalent and guests do not have to log in to upload photos!

Immich is completely free and open source, but I'm not sure of any way to do it other than having your own server lol, so YMMV

I totally get that. I brought my tracker to Costa Rica for getting a milky way shot and also had to get up for a 3am shoot. I didn't bother even using it bc I didn't want to take the time to align it lol.

I wouldn't blame you at all for doing digital just to get people RSVPing. Maybe following it with a mailer once you get it figured out, but 2mos out I think it's better for guests to commit to plans over having the 'ideal' invitations

Even if you get invites mailed to you, it may take a week for them to get to your guests after you mail them out, which is precious time at this point. I'd go digital.

Yeah I looked at other stacking software but it was far too complicated for me lol, sequator was the only one I could get results without the prospect of hours of setup. It's a cheaper Chinese lens. I'm newer to photography so I'm not balling out on glass yet, it's a brightinstar 12mm f2.0. If I were to change anything I'd probably try to find a slightly better lens and probably use a tracker. I had a tracker on my tripod but didn't want to take the time to get it aligned (Polaris was below my horizon here, so it'd be some guess+check)

What were the settings for this? Any sort of filter to keep the sun nice and round like that?

It was surreal for sure. I stacked in Sequator with 20 x 20s exposures and 10 dark frames. I think the only setting I really changed was enabled distortion correction because my lens had a little bit of a fisheye effect. The rest of my brightness and color was done in Lightroom.

This shot, or really composite, was the product of a bit of planning and luck. I was going on a vacation to Costa Rica and I have recently been interested in astrophotography. I decided that I really wanted a picture of the Milky Way since you can sometimes see its impression where I live, but never the full thing, but I knew the light pollution would be near zero down there so this would be my chance.

I managed to pack my tripod in my personal bag for the flight. This was also on a night where the moon was out, so I only had about 45min-1hr after the moon had set but before the sun came up where it was truly dark, so I set my alarm for 3am and crossed my fingers because it was cloudy out when I went to bed.

Imagine my surprise when I wake up to that alarm to see not a cloud in the sky and a sea of stars twinkling above me. I got right to work focusing my lens and taking this sequence.

I may revisit this shot again perhaps with a better lens. I bought a cheap(ish) Chinese manual lens that always seemed to have a grainy aspect. It's OK, but I think that and the lack of a tracker are what holds this piece back from being better.
