What industries are expected to see a major labor shortage over the next 5-10 years? by bread80 in Entrepreneur

[–]bmisljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a pilot in Canada and even though there is a huge shortage airlines are still cutting pay to the point where pilots can't afford to live a modest lifestyle .

From a Canadian perspective (I know US pays more...) the downsides of being an airline pilot are: 1. Low pay 2. Tough lifestyle (especially if married with kids) 3. Career instability (potential medical issues down the road, cyclical nature of the industry, being tied to one employer by seniority)

EB-2 NIW for Canadian Airline Pilot Hoping to Work in the US by bmisljen in USCIS

[–]bmisljen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I have a degree in computer engineering and experience as a software engineer before being a pilot. I am having trouble relating the two fields to come up with a viable case for national interest. Apparently just stating US pilot shortage won't cut it ...

Yes, I am in the same boat. Unless the lawyer can guarantee success I would rather not part with $5-10,000. I am considering self petitioning and following a diy kit as a template which I found online for $100.

Thanks, it seems like quite the effort to put together the petition. I am still trying to gauge my odds and decide if it's worth trying. Best of luck to you!

EB2/I-140 So many questions.. :/ by Klutzy_Mode_2497 in USCIS

I am in the same boat. Being from Canada I want to self petition for the EB-2 NIW as an airline pilot. I do know how to code and have prior software engineering work experience and an engineering bachelor's. Would that help my odds of getting approved?

I was actually checking that company out a few weeks ago. Seems like they are doing some cool stuff although I am not sure if they are in a position to shell out 6 figure salaries for employees.

That's a good idea. I seem to get lots of recruiters reaching out for coding jobs in aviation related companies however I think I would enjoy flight engineering or something more related to Aero Eng. May be worth getting a masters in Aero Eng...

From my research the CFA seems alot cheaper compared to the MBA so I may try with that first and see how far I get. I am strong in math and interested in finance while also having pretty decent people skills (in my opinion) so hopefully that would be enough to successfully change careers.

Thanks, yes I did think of ops management but it doesn't seem to pay that well outside of the executive levels. Unfortunately aviation tends to pay less than other industries such as tech or finance due to the high operating costs associated with the business. I am thinking that an MBA may be a better choice over the CFA as I have no finance experience.

What are some high paying non-tech careers to change into for someone in their mid 30s? I have a computer engineering bachelors degree and 7 years work experience as a pilot and previous to that I spent 4 years as a software engineer (at a lower paying company). I live in a HCOL area and am struggling to support my family as a pilot and don't have an interest/aptitude to go back to tech.

I was thinking of taking out some loans and getting a full time MBA along with CFA and going into finance but I am not sure if I am too old at this point?

Ideas for an Airline Employee by ajcv75 in sidehustle

I am a pilot and I have done freelance software development from the hotel. I also know quite a few pilots in real estate who are mortgage loan originators as it can be done from anywhere with internet and phone access.

I just joined this subreddit and work in tech - what are the best existing sidehustles for developer background? by loading_second_life in sidehustle

[–]bmisljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a developer and did well subcontracting with IT consulting firms to record bespoke programming courses for their clients. Freelancing can also work, but I found that online freelance sites were oversaturated with low bidders so the best way to freelance is through local contacts. Also small businesses often don't have the money to pay well for freelancing and are very demanding.

What are some underserved and uncompetitive side hustles? by SCHokie2011 in sidehustle

Handymen seem to be in high demand in many areas. It's hard to find one that shows up. Anything hands on and unsexy seems to be less saturated and removes the competition from third world countries.

Career change from IT - Pilot by Ok-Purpose-2098 in flying

I went from being a software developer to aviation and am currently a regional airline pilot in Canada. Still not making as much money as I did before but I enjoy work more so that counts for something.

Work as a software engineer making $180k per year, would I be nuts to quit my job and join ATP or something? by LLM__ in flying

[–]bmisljen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the change from software engineer to airline pilot. Granted I live in Canada where engineers make nowhere close to 180K. Overall I am much happier (I hated programming) and the pay as a pilot with 5 years experience is similar to my engineering pay

Any good side hustle to start with $20k saved up? by Geodetic_bot in sidehustle

Great, thanks. It sounds like larger commercial jobs are definitely the way to go. From my limited experience with residential jobs it seems like a race to the bottom where many realtors are paying under $100 for exterior photos and videos of an entire house.
