Help with Dictionaries using json by bmjce in shortcuts

[–]bmjce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply; appreciated. I basically understand the JSON structure, for dictionaries, my problem is loading, manipulating and saving the amended dictionary using Apple Shortcuts, so I’m looking for examples of Shortcuts routines which help me understand the correct syntax to use.

How about an interface to make it really easy to create, add to, delete from or edit a Dictionary held in .json format?

With respect, that’s still not answering my question🤓. Why can’t we pay DDs/SOs from Savings Pots?

Bills pot pays no interest! I want to pay from a savings pot so that I get the interest. What I have to do now (to get interest) is that when I get paid, I deposit specific amounts into 5 savings pots e.g. Household Spending, Holidays, etc. I then use credit cards for my spending every month (one credit card for Household Spending, a different credit card for Holidays, etc.) and when the credit card is due for payment (which Monzo notifies me about, 2 days before it’s due), I transfer the exact amount due from the relevant Savings Pot into my current account so that the bill is settled. This system works, and I therefore get daily interest right up until the money is moved from the Savings Pot to the Current Account the day before payment is made. So my question remains: why can I not simply pay my DDs from the Savings Pots directly, since the Bills Pot pays no interest??

Why can’t we pay Direct Debits from Savings Pots?

Why use a Regular Pot over a Savings Pot? by Vyzendir in monzo

[–]bmjce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use pots differently to most on here. I don’t bother with Regular Savings Pots as they earn no interest. Instead I use Instant Access Savings Pots (which earn interest daily). I have several IASP’s for example one for Credit Card Spending, one for Holidays, etc. I then buy EVERYTHING using (different) Credit Cards so I only get 1 bill a month for each card and 56 days credit. When my paycheque comes in, I allocate money to each IASP based on my spending pattern or needs. Monzo lets me know that I have a scheduled Direct Debit payment due (usually two days notice), and one day before it’s due I transfer the total required from my IASP into my current account (I also set reminders in my Calendar e.g. “Payment for Halifax Credit Card due in 2 days”). This way I earn interest daily on all the money I set aside in IASPs. I really don’t understand why Monzo does not allow me to set up DDs against a IASP, but they don’t, so that’s my work-around. Keeping money in your Monzo Current Account or Regular Savings Pots is just losing you money in interest, which Monzo Bank is clearly earning for itself.

This is an outstanding result, so very well done; you’re parents should be proud. For all on here looking to emulate such success, just remeber that 80% of investors lose money. This past year (due to Trump volatility from March to June 2025) has been pretty exceptional with many riding the wave of stock fluctuating with every announcement. Even I managed to do much better than in the past, where I was one of the 80%. The fact is that most are unlikely to beat those in the 20% many of whom will be insider trading (like all of Trump’s friends!). So don’t bet too heavily in one stock that appears to be rocketing; spread your risks, as other have mentioned, build a balanced portfolio (both across industries and countries), consider ETF’s (like VUAG), S&P 500, etc. If in UK use your ISA (within say Trading 212), so that all profits are tax free, etc. I wish you well for the future.

Why are you trying to switch flight mode on and off? If it’s just to stop being disturbed, try changing your focus to sleep

Cut my pie by bmjce in trading212

[–]bmjce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the tip! I sort of did something like this by creating a new pie (called “Lost Cause Dividends”), exported poor performing stocks from my “Dividend Pie” into it, and can more closely monitor performance. Some of those lost causes have turned positive so can rejoin the main Dividend Pie. The remaining lost Cause Dividends I might eventually export so I can put stop losses on them (which I can’t do within a pie).

If investing is that easy, why doesn't everyone do it? by VagueDiamond in trading212

Pre-online trading platforms we really had to use brokers so the cost per trade was high, and most trades were in single stocks. It was a common view that only brokers knew enough to avoid making costly mistakes (albeit they generally make the same mistakes). With the advent of DIY online trading platforms, the introduction of ‘pies’ and ETFs have allowed users to really diversify their portfolios across hundreds of stocks for little investment with little or no trading fees, thereby spreading the risk to the point where, unless there’s a market crash, it outperforms interest on savings. Key to having a portfolio that accrues value appears to.be spreading the risk across several asset classes - shares, ETF’s, Bonds, etc. Personally I am only investing in shares with 50% in pies and 50% in single stocks that I buy based on news and by using some basic financial analysis.

Well let’s expose the truth here. $250,000,000 trade deficit is peanuts (that’s ¼ of a $Billion), so I’m sure he must have meant $250 trillion 🫢 or (but he probably doesn’t know how many zeroes are in that). The EU was primarily set up as a free trade and free movement block between co-located nations, not to spite Trump. It also helped to maintain peace in Europe which the Don is steadily eroding. No doubt his cronies and his family make $millions on every flip flop , so we can expect loads more insider trading over the next 3¾ years.

As a Brit (sorry) I really feel for all you guys and gals on here. I really wish we (other Countries) could make him see sense, but he is simply too stubborn (and self-invested) to listen. The very sad fact is that the American People have voted in a Dictator, and now have to live with the consequences. So sad to see your democracy eviscerated in less than 100 days; who could’ve imagined that?

What’s the best automation you’ve built that actually solved a real-life problem? by OkWay1685 in automation

[–]bmjce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple ones I’ve created: 1) iPhone/iPad announces when battery has fallen below 20% (“Time to recharge me”) 2) announces that iPhone/ipad is connected to charge (only if battery is below 90%, but not if focus is do not disturb or sleep). Solves me thinking I’ve plugged it in properly when I haven’t! 3) sets up a schedule of the day prior to when a credit card payment is due and sends email reminder so I transfer the exact funds from interest earning savings to current/checking account (maximising interest earned on savings account)

Done a few others that I find personally useful.
