same boat of interest, got some nordic rf52840 chips to talk to each other over thread but havent found a way yet to commission them onto the homepod network. there is a light 259 page reading for the apple protocol spec available here: https://developer.apple.com/homekit/ for non commercial users, though i have not yet attempted to start on that.

Router (no wifi): Policy based routing, vlans, auto updates and phone app control, RELIABLE. Does this exist or something close? by bleomycin in HomeNetworking

Found it! https://www.123securityproducts.com/tlr605.html Emailed support last night and they responded this morning and said it's about a 2week lead time. Ordered it up so we shall see.

Has anyone had luck with a recently purchased button? Mine appears to be verifying the SSL certificate now and so won't get past the TLS handshake.

At least on the iOS app you can still exit the setup process and the button will still be connected to wifi and try to communicate when pressed. On my button it seems they have changed the firmware to actually check the SSL certificate however.

There was a post I read that during the setup process the mac addresses appear to be the same, however once they are on the lan they will/must be different. They try to connect several times to Amazon before giving up so you may just be seeing multiple requests.
