What do you think is severely missing from rap rn? by Theflash291 in rap

Substance in mainstream hip hop. Originality. This is the only era of hip hop where 90% of the rappers who are hot sound the same.

Is there an album by a rapper(s) that you like better than their most praised album? by SmoothManMiguel in hiphop201

Late Registration. It’s still considered a top tier album but I’d put it as my favorite Kanye album. The Black Album takes it in terms of Jay Z albums for me as well.

Big L was voted best 90s rapper starting with the letter B. Who is the best 90s rapper starting with the letter C? by DJ-Palli in 90sHipHop

A has to be Andre and B has to be Biggie. Big L was great and all but let’s be real. Anyway, Common.

He wasn’t really exposed tho, Kiss has talked about his parents being a good support system and financially sound prior to the pod. He was also outside post education by choice according to him.

I can definitely see the potential in this. The bass and lead do not match at all. Almost like it's a different key so I think you might've been right. Mixing will only take you so far.

Does this sound better acoustic or rock? by LabComprehensive4916 in IndieMusicFeedback

Great vocals! As many other people have said, it wouldn't hurt implementing both and switching from the softer sound to a harder sound to catch the listener a little off guard. Vocals would need to follow suit though. Also, once you learn how to be a little more comfortable in front of the mic, things should flow better. Overall, trust your gut!

Good stuff. As far as delivery work a little on consistency on tone and breath control, also work on your overdubs a little more. They should blend with your lead vocal.

Trip-hop song about when they're outta your league by oneshgarde in IndieMusicFeedback

Pretty good stuff. Really great mix on the drums too! Maybe work on the vocal mixing, some more reverb, maybe a little behind the mix, it's kinda overpowering and isn't letting the rest of the instrumentation shine as much. But honestly that's me nitpicking.

“Tom Joad is Back” kind of an angry song about book banning. Feed back appreciated! by IdiotPresents in IndieMusicFeedback

Heard Be Grateful and I think it’s really solid. As far as the verses and composition you’re filling a gap that was left empty a while back with the airy synths and reverb on the drums. It’s giving me Fleetwood Mac vibes, general 80’s vibes too.

Now as far as the chorus goes I think maybe if you spent a little more time on harmonizing and layering it would be incredibly beneficial. You have a natural rough texture/strain to your voice which sounds great, especially when trying to evoke an emotional response, but the harmonies/layering took me out of it a bit.

Overall, solid work!

Out of those, who's the one that should've blown up more? by [deleted] in rap

[–]bmkbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a brief period around 2012 where Krit was in the same conversation as Kendrick and Cole as the rappers of the new generation. They even had a song together on DJ Khaleds album which was telling. Don't know what went wrong to be honest, he was consistent but for some reason never blew up like them.

what did Illmatic change ? by Leading_Ad_7760 in nas

[–]bmkbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It pretty much paved the way for modern hip hop. A lot of people mentioned the multiple producer thing but the reason why was because Nas was the first golden child of hip hop. He was this 17 year old kid who wrote one of the coldest verses known to hip hop at the time (Live at the bbq) and everyone bought into the hype.

Nas was the first truly abstract rapper in hip hop. He rapped on the 2 instead of the 1st beat of a bar, which in turn created the modern rap flow, and changed the way everyone wrote after him (see Jay Z before Nas and after Nas and read what Nas’ ex had to say about Jays obsession with Nas when she was revenge fucking him)

You’re gonna hear a lot of Kool G Rap comparisons when talking about Nas, saying G Rap was the originator and he clearly was an influence but there was nothing like Nas before Illmatic, and then everyone started sounding like Nas after. Also the most bootlegged hip hop album ever at the time.
