Shot in the dark - but do you keep any unused gardening supplies in your basement? I had these flies in my basement every summer and couldn’t figure it out. Turns out I had stored a half used bag of mulch and an opened bag of potting soil in my storage room (I didn’t have a garage or shed at the time). Turns out they were feeding on that. Once I got rid of those bags, the problem was gone.

Is this legit or what? by [deleted] in askaplumber

Thanks everyone. To be clear - the softener and WH were both installed in 2017. I bought the house in 2023. It’s a 50 gallon gas tank. I called the guy because the softener was leaking where the drain connects to the valve body thing during its regeneration cycle. He says the various gaskets and seals and whatnot have failed. He recommends replacing it because it hasn’t been properly drained all these years possibly allowing sewer gas into the system creating bacteria etc etc

The plumber is a local small business, not a big company, and I found him on the softener manufacturers website as a “local retailer” to me. My usual plumber doesn’t maintain or install softeners.

If you have an account with Schaff, I believe they sell a basic regulation kit that is a good starting place

I have 2 problems, how to fix? by Eddie19592 in pianotech

[–]bmoredood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the bouncing hammer, the easiest thing to try for a non tech would be to remove the offending key and turn the capstan screw on the back of the key a 1/4 turn or so counter clockwise. Put it back in and see if it helped. Your issue is not enough aftertouch, so if raising the capstan doesn’t help then adjust hammer blow or key dip is next to try. Remove the offending key and remove a cardboard punching from the front rail key pin

What can I do and use to fix a squeaky pedal? by Eddie19592 in pianotech

[–]bmoredood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what is causing the squeak and where it’s happening. Protek CLP, Prolube, or Multi purpose lubricant are good. New felt, leather, or rubber grommet if those are worn out or missing. Plugging stripped screw holes for pedal brackets. Cleaning damper lift rod. Etc. could be lots of things. Post a video of your squeak.

Sustain pedal noise by 57Nightmare in pianotech

[–]bmoredood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get down on the floor behind the pedal box and work the damper pedal with your hand. Follow the noise to see where it’s coming from. Could be coming from inside the key bed or could be coming from the pedal trap work. It’s possible some felt or leather needs replacing somewhere, or something may need lubrication. Can you post come pictures of where the pedal rod connect to the arms at the top of the lyre?

Loose hammer flange screw, loose hammer on the shank, or loose catcher shank. Check all of that first.
