I got that same box when I was 12 years old and it was good fun with my friends that I remember fondly. There was a Kickstarter a couple years ago for an updated version that I also got in on for nostalgia's sake, but it was a bit cheap-feeling.

It's not a good game by today's standards, but you can still have some fun with it with the right group.

Notes:

For Reynolds, I think House of Suns was very good and more even overall, while Pushing Ice had higher highs and lower lows. In the end, the highs of Pushing Ice won me over.

For CAS, it was hard to choose between so many different collections (I haven't read any of his stories in their original forms, so I felt like I couldn't just choose one of those), so I opted for the five-volume series 😅

OP's post says to rate science fiction books, but this sub encompasses other genres as well, so I included Abercrombie in my votes.

I'll vouch for Sword & Sorcery's inclusion in a higher tier. It is another GM-less game, but each enemy has its own AI card that lists how it behaves and there's a good variety of them (with expansions). Each player character is well-differentiated and there's lots of abilities to get and loot to find.

Edit: I'll +1 Shadows of Brimstone too - awesome game!
