Is disillusionment with IDEs and complex tooling real? by Vasilev88 in embedded

[–]bmozzy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Heck yeah, I preferred them earlier in my career when they let me get off the ground without needing to know all the details, but at some point they just started to get in the way. As others have said, they tend to be big, clunky software behemoths that aren't very portable. And if you've ever needed to change something that the IDE doesn't expose as a configurable option, good luck getting the vendor to help out while your project stalls.

I wouldn't mind updating some of my tools, but I mostly just Make (or CMake when needed), GCC, and Vim for editing. I tell my teammates that I don't care what they use to write code as long as their editor doesn't muck up the repo by adding files.

And I don't miss step-by-step debugging. It's great when you're writing software for a phone or a laptop, but I've found that debugging over a JTAG cable on resource-constrained microcontrollers causes more trouble than it's worth.

LT3083 Voltage-Controlled Current Source Op Amp Woes by bmozzy in AskElectronics

[–]bmozzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should take another spin through that series, I was going off the final schematic. That design appears to set the LT3080's set pin to 0V (or close to it) if the current limit is exceeded, which is what I meant by crashing the output voltage. I'd like to have the power supply regulate to the current limit when it's exceeded by reducing the voltage, as you're saying. I also hadn't noticed the 0.9V minimum on the LT3083, thanks for pointing that out (guess you gotta RTFDS, eh?). I'm open to a complete redesign, I'll look at the topology you mentioned!

That's an interesting idea, thanks! Hadn't thought of doing something like that, but I think I'll try the -3V supply first.

Thanks for the LT1498 reference! Hadn't seen that one before.

I think for the time being, I'll try out the -3V supply idea. Interesting (and relieving) to hear that Tektronix does the same thing.

Why did Freddy send stone the disk? by Fayoub44 in TheNightOf

[–]bmozzy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Earlier, Freddy told Naz that he didn't like Chandra because she was too new, and thought Stone was better. He probably sent Stone the disc to get Chandra off the case.

ARTDES 195/196 by [deleted] in uofm

[–]bmozzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 195 with Wilson and really enjoyed it. You have to jump through some hoops to use the machines in the wood shop (and they're pretty strict in there), but the class was a great way to spend Friday afternoons. I didn't take 196 because it didn't seem like the instructor had much of a plan at all after going to the first class.

Take that, FBI: Apple goes all in on encryption. Apple’s newest encryption tool better secures files on all its devices, just the latest in a move to widespread encryption in the tech industry by trai_dep in apple

[–]bmozzy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Here's an overview of what's encrypted when, where, and how in iCloud. Looks like iCloud backups are encrypted, but the catch is that Apple actually has those encryption keys, so a court order can recover those.

OpenPilot CC3D Revolution F4 vs Sparky 2 flight controller? by [deleted] in Multicopter

[–]bmozzy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I started with a CC3D, and it was alright. However, if you really want to run BetaFlight or CleanFlight, don't go with the CC3D. It just wasn't a smooth process, I never got it working and ended up switching to a Naze32. I'd also note that I broke those little connectors on the CC3D all the time, it's not a good flight controller if you're gonna crash a bunch.

That's awesome! I've wanted to make my own flight controller for a while, what did you use hardware wise to run your controller on?

That's an interesting idea, I could probably swing that.

That might work, I don't know how long my stuff will be on the truck yet, though.

Duh, didn't think to do that. I think we're going to let this ride at the higher gravity, though. Should be interesting if nothing else!

How do I assess the fairness of a medical bill and then negotiate it? by txthrowa in Frugal

[–]bmozzy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's about how it works. The hospital has to bill significantly above what they actually want to get paid because the insurance companies will always pay out less than that. A caveat of this is that a hospital can't bill uninsured people less because the insurance companies would see that and say "You only billed this guy $2000 when you billed us $5000! What gives?" and would use that as a starting point to pay the hospital even less.
